Lillian Lapp
Lillian C. Lapp, 82, formerly of rural Wisconsin Dells, died Friday, April 10, 2008 at the Omro Care Center after suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body dementia for eight years.
Lillian Clare Colburn was born June 29, 1925 in Lewiston Township, Columbia County, the daughter of the late Arthur and Veronica (nee Meyer) Colburn. She graduated from Portage High School and earned a degree in cosmetology following high school. During World War II, she worked at the Badger Army Ordnance Plant, where she tested gunpowder.
She married Ivan Lapp on April 27, 1946 at the Big Spring Congregational Church. She and Ivan moved to Milwaukee where she worked in beauty shops.
In 1950, they returned to the Lapp family farm in New Haven Township, Adams County, and Lillian worked for beauty shops in the Dells and Portage before opening her own shop in their home. In 1961, the couple and their three children moved to a home two miles away in Big Spring. There she also opened a beauty shop, which she ran until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of the Wisconsin Cosmetology Association and served on its state board and as its secretary for many years.
Lillian was a member of the Big Spring Congregational Church, where she served as treasurer and clerk for several years. She was also a long-time member of the church’s Ladies Aid and was its treasurer and president for many years. She taught Sunday school for a number of years.
She was a member of the Lake Mason Rebekahs, the Briggsville American Legion Auxiliary, which she served as president, and a former member of the local homemakers group.
Lillian loved children, and she and Ivan opened their home to Rita Farrell Smith so she could continue in high school in Wisconsin Dells while her father lived in Arizona and for several months to Betty and Patty Eckerd so they could continue in the Big Spring School while their home was being rebuilt after a fire. She also was the general leader of the New Haven 4-H club for years. Many children in the community called her grandma.
She was a cook, who supplied main dishes and baked goods for many community events. She loved to garden, and she and Ivan were known for the strawberries and raspberries they raised and sold. What came from the garden also ended up as pickled, frozen and canned. She made quilts and crocheted many an afghan and baby blanket, which she gave to relatives and friends.
She is survived by a son, Lawrence (Mary) Lapp, of Menomonie; two daughters, Kathleen “Kay” Lapp James of Wisconsin Dells and Marilyn (Larry) Belter of rural Berlin; three grandchildren, Justin Lapp, of Minneapolis, Minn., Dustin (Jennifer) Lapp, of New Hope and Kristina Lapp of Stevens Point; a sister, Lorraine Ryan of Chicago; special friends, Rita and Bruce Smith of Big Flats, and children, Apryl (Ben) Brantley and son Owen, of Larsen, Lance and Tami Smith and children, Jacob and Madisyn, of Berlin, and Aaron Smith of Stevens Point; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan in 1995; a grandson, John James in 1999; a sister Vivian Joyce, and a brother, Royal Colburn.
A memorial service will be on Tuesday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at the Big Spring Congregational Church, preceded by visitation at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services. Pastor David Bowman will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Big Spring Cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Big Spring Congregational Church building fund or to either the Lewy Body Dementia or Alzheimer’s associations.
Norah Adair
Norah Alcott Kelly Adair, age 69, of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, died Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
No services are planned at this time. She will be inurned at the Greenwood Cemetery in Amherst, Wisconsin.
Norah was born October 1, 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Paul Ryan and Ruth Smith Kelly. She graduated from Waupaca High School in 1956 and attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She worked as a medical transcriptionist in the Madison area for many years and also at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage, Wisconsin.
Norah is survived by a daughter, Virginia (Rodney) Richardson of Lexington, Kentucky; a son, Nikolas Adair of Madison; and a sister, Laurie (Jim) Steffen of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Nancy Hisgen
Nancy Hisgen, age 71, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at her residence.
An Order of the Eastern Star memorial funeral service will be held Friday, May 2, 2008 at 7:00 P.M. at the Picha Funeral Home in Lake Delton, Wisconsin. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 6 p.m. until the time of service at 7 p.m.
Nancy was born January 14, 1937 in Racine, Wisconsin, the daughter of Neil and Elsie (Winterle) Maher. She grew up in Racine and was married there in October of 1954 to Richard Hisgen. He preceded her in death in 1977. Nancy had worked at the Wisconsin Dells Visitor and Convention Bureau for the past 12 years. She treasured spending time with family and friends and she enjoyed traveling; visiting Brazil, Florida, California, Hawaii and Nova Scotia. Nancy was also a proud 43 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she held many offices and was a past Grand Chaplain of the State of Wisconsin and a former Grand Representative to New Brunswick.
Nancy is survived by her sons, Neil of Nova Scotia, John (Kathy) of Margate, Florida and Richard (Colleen) of Wisconsin Dells; daughters, Mary (Richard) Jacobson-Rasmussen of Wisconsin Dells and Alyce (Scott) Coyle of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and 5 sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and a daughter, Barbara Cure.
Robert Jones
Robert Ray Jones, age 88, and lifelong resident of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008 at the University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin Dells, with Reverend Steven Keller officiating. Burial will be at the Davis Corners Cemetery. Military rites will be presented by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells. Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Thursday, May 1, 2008 from 4 to 7 P.M. with a Masonic Service held at 6:30 p.m. and on Friday at the United Presbyterian Church from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
Robert “Bob” was born July 12, 1919 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, the son of Anton and Mary (Nelson) Jones. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 1941 and was honorably discharged in October of 1945. In November of 1947 he married Bette Stroede. She preceded him in death in October of 2007.
Bob was a plasterer by trade working for Fix Brothers in Madison for many years before becoming a partner in J&G Plastering Company for 19 years in Wisconsin Dells. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church; Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 and had served as Commander; V.F.W. Post 9387 and had served as Commander; and the Dells Masonic Lodge 124 and had served as Junior Deacon and Junior Warden.
Bob is survived by his sons, Steven (George Ann) Jones of Reedsburg, and Bruce Jones of Wisconsin Dells; daughter Diane (Richard) Lemke of Montello; a sister, Lorraine (Warren) Swets of Florida; sister-in-law, Elnora Jones of Wisconsin Dells; grandchildren, Paula (Kevin) Pavelka, Robert (Jessica) Keyes, Christina (Brian) Delanty and Michael Jones; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bette; son, David K. Jones; grandson, David T. Jones; brothers, Arnie, George and Leonard; and sisters, Eleanor, Mildred and Hilda.
The family suggests memorials be given to the Presbyterian Church or Davis Corners Cemetery.
Joyce Carlson
Joyce Darlene Carlson (Barko), age 72, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Maplewood Skilled Nursing Center of Sauk City, Wisconsin.
Memorial funeral services will be held Monday, May 5, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells, with Reverend Craig Wolfgram officiating. Visitation will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 A.M.
Joyce was born July 6, 1935 in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Ruth (Curry) Barko. Her parents had a large strawberry and vegetable farm on the outskirts of Muscatine, and she spent many summers of her youth picking strawberries on their suburban farm. Joyce attended grade school and high school in Muscatine, transferring to a Seventh Day Adventist academy near Chicago for her senior year and graduated in 1953. Later she worked for Corn Products in the quality control division of their alcohol production in Muscatine.
She met her future husband, Dr. Robert L. Carlson, at his brother’s wedding in Chicago, in 1958 and were married in Muscatine, on October 29, 1960 eventually making their home in Wisconsin Dells.
They were blessed with two sons, Robert “Rob” James, an attorney in Minneapolis, and Jon Edward, a copywriter in Milwaukee. Jon and Jennifer (Slater) married in Wausau, Wisconsin, in 1997 and have two children, Samantha Anne, 7, and Aaron Jon, 5. Liv Lyngstad, an AFS student from Norway, stayed with the family in 1969-70 and is a “daughter by mutual consent”. She is vice principal of an elementary school in Oslo, Norway. Joyce is further survived by two brothers, Don (Janet) Barko of Muscatine and James (Gail) Barko of Grand Rapids, Michigan and a sister, Janet (Stan) Westberg of Prentice, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Joyce was a wonderful wife and mother, a good cook and homemaker, an avid bridge player and she had a wonderful sense of humor. For 22 years she worked for and managed Swiss Maid Fudge in Wisconsin Dells, specializing in making turtles. She also served as secretary of the Wisconsin Dells Art Association for many years and was a volunteer office worker at Bethany Lutheran Church.
Joyce will be greatly missed by her husband of 48 years, her two sons, family and many friends.
Arthur Treptow
Arthur Treptow, age 66, of Elcho, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully Friday, May 2, 2008 at his residence.
Memorial funeral services will be held Friday, May 9, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Picha Funeral Home in Lake Delton, Wisconsin, with Reverend Dennis Schueler officiating. Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home on Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of service at 7 p.m.
Arthur was born January 20, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Bernard A. and LaVerne (Staar) Treptow. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was later honorably discharged. In April of 1988 he married Carol (Cook) Thorsen in Portage, Wisconsin. Following retirement they moved to Elcho where they have resided for over ten years.
Arthur is survived by his loving wife, Carol; sons, William (Sandi) Thorsen of Marshall, Wisconsin, and Carlton (Kris) Thorsen of Lake Delton, Wisconsin; a daughter, Lorrie Thorsen of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; a brother, Richard B. Treptow of Lake Geneva; and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Beatrice Nickel
Beatrice Olivia (Soma) Nickel, age 93, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, died Friday, May 9, 2008 at the Reedsburg Area Medical Center in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, with her family by her side.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church of Wisconsin Dells, with Reverend Dennis Schueler and Vicar Douglas Taylor co-officiating. Visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Wednesday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.
Beatrice was born September 27, 1914 and was the ninth child born to Peder and Bertha (Stensland) Soma, on a farm near Spring Valley, Minnesota. She was baptized by Pastor Hans Berg at the Bethlehem Norwegian Lutheran church. The family moved to Kilbourn (Wisconsin Dells), Wisconsin in 1919. Beatrice attended grade school in what was then Kilbourn, Wisconsin. Beatrice was confirmed May 25, 1928 at Trinity Lutheran Church Wisconsin Dells by the late Pastor Ewald Smukal where she had been a member since 1920. On November 12, 1931 she married Alfred H. Nickel. This union was blessed by two girls Bonnie and Darlene, and three boys Melvin, Gene, and Jerry. Beatrice was a special person taking care of her invalid mother for twenty-four years, and raising her children and two younger brothers, Stanley and Nenfred in the same farm house where she lived for seventy-two years. Beatrice was a 4-H leader in the Newport Busy Bees. She worked on the Election board for many years, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 35 years. She was active in the community helping neighbors when threshing, silo filling, and sawing wood. After her husband passed away, she went to work as a waitress at the Uphoff Rotunda for eighteen years. Beatrice and the late Clara Hauser were the ones who founded the Sons of Norway lodge organized in Wisconsin Dells in June 1978. Beatrice was president of the Vakkertland 5-570 lodge in 1983, 1990, and 1995 and also held other offices in the lodge for nineteen years. Beatrice received the Silver Merit Award for President of Sons of Norway in 1995. Beatrice was a delegate to three international conventions and six district conventions and has held offices in the lodge until 1999. Beatrice was a very proud devoted Norwegian who had made six trips to Norway where she visited relatives, and researched her ancestry through various cemeteries.
Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred; eight brothers, Nenfred, Ingebert, Oscar, Paul, Aimer, Laurie, Stanley, and Arlie Soma as well as two sister's, Milla Tovdal and Laida Platt; a grandson, Terry M. Nickel and a very special friend, Garland Whipp. Beatrice was very devoted as she stayed with her mother; brothers, Laurie and Paul; sisters, Laida and Milla; and brother-in-law, Martin Platt when they passed on. She sat with grandson Tim when he was shot and in the hospital. She sat with grandson Terry as he was dying. She stayed 32 days with her son Gene at Eau Claire Lutheran Hospital. She also spent many hours with her brother Stanley as he was in the nursing home with Alzheimer's. If anyone needed help, Beatrice was already there. She is survived by children, Bonnie Weber, Melvin (Kathy) Nickel, Darlene (Gaelyn) Schuette, Gene Nickel, and Jerry (Mary) Nickel. In addition she is survived by 20 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
