Frank W. Steponik, 82, of rural Black River Falls, died Tuesday evening, August 7, 2001 in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Madison. Frank was born on May 2, 1919 in the Town of City Point, to Joseph and Josephine (Smolen) Steponik. He was raised near Pray. Frank served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937 at Ellsworth, WI. A World War II veteran, he entered the U.S. Army on June 16, 1942 and served until April 4, 1946. During that time, Frank served in Africa, Sicily, France and the United States. As a young man, he was employed as a trackman by the Green Bay and Western Railroad. Following his discharge from the Army, Frank was employed at the Tomah Veterans Administration Hospital for 4 years. He had also been employed by Marshfield Homes for 3 years, Rolla Homes for 3 years, and Stratford Homes for 2 years. Frank had also been employed on cranberry farms and as a pulpwood cutter. He married the former Esther V. Adams on May 14, 1952 in Medford, WI. The couple lived at Pray, for many years and had also lived in Pittsville, and Marshfield. They moved to rural Black River Falls in 1980. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved to hunt and fish. Survivors include his wife, Esther; a son, Frankie (Darvi) Steponik, of Black River Falls; a daughter, Katholeen (Robert) Mortenson, of Neillsville; 4 grandchildren, Brooke (William) Aldach and Frankie Steponik, Jr. both of Black River Falls, Justin Mortenson, of Neillsville, and Tina Mortenson, of Menomonie; 3 great-grandchildren, Devin Aldach, and Derringer and Derrick Mortenson; a sister, Mary Michalak, of City Point; a brother, Peter Steponik, of Black River Falls; 2 sisters-in-law, Tina Steponik, of Wausau, and Valasta Steponik, of Pray; and numerous nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Ostrowski; and 3 brothers, John, Joseph and Stanley Steponik. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 11, 2001 at 9 A.M. from the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. Deacon Ed Schaper officiated and burial, with military honors by Thompson-RedCloud VFW Post #1959 and Miles-Hagen American Legion Post #200, will be in the Spaulding Cemetery, Town of City Point, Jackson County, WI. Friends and relatives may call at the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, on Friday from 6 to 8 P.M. and on Saturday from 8 A.M. until services.
Wayne Thompson

Wayne M. Thompson, 52, of Black River Falls, died Sunday, September 9, 2001 in Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN. Wayne was born on April 9, 1949 in Neillsville, to Herschel and Bertha (Climer) Thompson. He was raised at Dells Dam, Clark County, until 1959 when he moved to a foster home in Melrose, operated by Thomas and Clara Bue. He graduated from Melrose-Mindoro High School in 1967. Wayne served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1971. During that time, he served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. Since his discharge from the Army, Wayne has lived at Black River Falls, St. Paul, and Minneapolis. He was employed as a general laborer by concrete masons and highway construction companies. Survivors include 2 brothers, Jeffrey (Debbie) Thompson, of Osceola, WI, and John Thompson, III, of Mauston; 2 sisters, Gloria Thompson, of Black River Falls, and Janet (Claude) Dittmer, of Eugene, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herschel and Bertha (Climer) Thompson. Funeral services will be Friday, September 14, 2001 at 10:30 A.M. at the Ho-Chunk United Church of Christ and burial, with military honors, will be in the Decorah Cemetery, both in rural Black River Falls. Friends may call at the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, on Thursday from 6 to 8 P.M. and at the church on Friday from 9:30 A.M. until services.
Roy Vasquez

Roy Vasquez, 75, of rural Black River Falls, died Wednesday evening, October 10, 2001 in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Roy was born on February 28, 1926 in Indiana Harbor, Indiana. He was orphaned at an early age and was raised in an orphanage in Canada. He later returned to the United States. Roy was a World War II U. S. Army Infantry veteran who served in Okinawa and Japan. He was a machine gunner and was also a Bronze Star Medal recipient for action in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He was married to Mary Edith Wallace during the 1950’s and they were later divorced. Following his discharge from the Army, Roy became employed as a machinist (tool and die maker) at Bally Industries of Chicago for many years. He later moved to Wisconsin where he was employed as a machinist at the Nekoosa Foundry, Nekoosa. In the late 1970’s, Roy moved to California where he was employed in the space industry in Silicon Valley. Following his retirement, Roy moved to Vesper, WI and then rural Black River Falls. He was a member of the Andrew BlackHawk American Legion Post #129 of Black River Falls and the Disabled American Veterans Post #69, and a life member of the VFW Post #2534 of Wisconsin Rapids. Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Vasquez, of Black River Falls; 3 sons, Hilton and Kevin Vasquez, both of Black River Falls, and Willie (Linda) Shegonee, of Tomah; several grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 2 P.M. from the Kevin Vasquez residence, N7694 Mitchell RedCloud Memorial Rd., Black River Falls. Ho-Chunk Chief Clayton Winneshiek will officiate and burial with military honors by the Andrew BlackHawk American Legion Post #129 will be in the Shegonee Cemetery, rural Pittsville. Friends and relatives may call at the Kevin Vasquez residence on Friday after 4 P.M. and on Saturday from 9 A.M. until time of services. The Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, is serving the family.
Madge Woodruff

Madge Woodruff, 90, of McAllen, TX, and formerly of Black River Falls, and Hatfield, died Saturday, October 6, 2001 in Edinburg Regional Hospital, McAllen. The former Magdalene V. “Madge” Frisch was born on February 17, 1911 in St. Paul, MN, to Nicholas and Magdalena (Erndt) Frisch. The family later settled in Black River Falls. Madge married Raymond Carson of Black River Falls in 1937. The couple lived in Berwyn, IL where they owned and operated a combination grocery store/delicatessen and Greyhound Bus stop. The couple later divorced and Madge returned to Black River Falls where she became employed by Dr. Ben Shlimovitz, DVM. Madge later married Curtis R. “Woody” Woodruff on August 4, 1951 in Black River Falls. The couple first lived in Black River Falls before moving to Hatfield in 1968. In later years, they spent the winter months in McAllen, TX. Woody Woodruff died on May 15, 1981. Following Woody’s death, Madge became a permanent resident of McAllen. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Carson, of McAllen, TX; 2 nephews, Donald (Roberta) Frisch, of North Freedom, WI and Jack (Rachel) Frisch, of Green Bay; and a niece, Sally (Gerald) Procter, of Green Bay. In addition to her husband, Madge was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Frisch. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 11 A.M. from the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. The Rev. Fr. Michael Braun will officiate and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Black River Falls. Relatives and friends may call at the Buswell Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 A.M. until services.
Mae H. Hicke
Mae H. Hicke, 88, of 2531 Sunrise Drive, died on Thursday, December 4, 1997. She was born September 14, 1909, in the Town of Farmington, to Henry and Josie (Houk) Clark. She married Ray Hicke on July 19, 1930, at Winona, Minnesota.
In addition to her husband, Ray, she is survived by a son, Richard (Jenette) Hicke of Fort Myers, Florida; by a sister, Ruth Sawyer of Hayward, Wis.; and by three grandchildren, Ronald, Randee (John) Molitor and Rachelle (Scott) Bailey and by six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by son, Gary Lee and eleven brothers and sisters.
Memorial services will be Saturday, December 13, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street. Fran Browning, Pastoral Care Provider for the funeral home will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date.
Anthony M. Hagen
Anthony M. Hagen, passed away December 4, 1997 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 1997 at one o'clock at the United Methodist Church in La Farge.
Delbert H. Randles
FRIENDSHIP, Wis. - Delbert H. Randles, age 66 years, of Friendship, Wisconsin, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 1997 at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home at King, Wisconsin.
He was born on November 7, 1931 to John and Carol (McClurg) Randles at Viroqua, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948. He was a graduate of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD), served on tour in Korea and Vietnam. He was married to Loma Lind, the daughter of Lyle C. and Enoid (DeWitt) Lind, on December 1, 1957 in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. He retired from active duty after 22 years, holding the rank of Master Sergeant in 1970. They made their home at Friendship, Wisconsin, and had three sons, Timothy, Michael, and Mark. Among Delbert's many other achievements, he retired from the Oxford Correctional Institute after 16 years, in June 1991. He spent his final three years at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home in King, Wisconsin, where he moved onto a greater place, where he will still feel the love and caring of his family and friends. He was a kind and loving man who will be missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Loma of Friendship, two sons, Michael of Wisconsin Dells and Mark of Friendship, two brothers, Calvin of Viroqua and Adrian of California, two sisters, Merle Ford and Beverly Skrede both of Westby. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Timothy.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 15, 1997 at 1 p.m. at the Picha Funeral Home in Hillsboro, with Rev. Donald Ehler officiating. Burial with military rites will be held at the Mount Vernon Cemetery at Hillsboro. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home in Hillsboro on Monday from noon until the time of services.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. - Rev. J.A. (Joyce) Nestingen, age 78, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., died peacefully at home, Sunday, December 7, 1997. Preceded in death by first wife Ruth (Vinge). Survived by loving wife, Rev. Beverly Jacobson; sons, Rev. James (Carolyn), Rev. Rolf (Sandy)l daughters, Mary, Janann (Larry) Sims; step-children, Carol sue (Rev. John) Andreason, Sarie Dale, John (Deb) Dale, Thomas (Renae) Dale; brothers, Myron (Edna), Dale (Ruth); sisters, Elaine Cordes, Marlene (Bob) Behanna; many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Graduate of Luther College and Luther Seminary. Served parishes in Wis., N.D. and Minn. Chaplain at Lyngblomsten Care Center, St. Paul. Most recent ministry as Visitation Pastor at Christ English Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. Funeral service Wednesday 11 a.m. Christ English Lutheran Church, Lowry at Oliver Ave. North. Visitation Tuesday, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Washburn-McReavy Swanson Chapel, Lowry at Irving Ave. North, and one hour before service at church. Interment Coon Valley, Wis. Richard L. R. Engler
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Richard L. R. Engler, 70, a long time resident of Lakeview Health Center, West Salem, died Thursday, December 4, 1997, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born November 20, 1927 in La Crosse, to Esther (Engler) Koenig. Richard is survived by two nephews, John and Bill Hellerud. He was preceded in death by his mother; his sister, Grace Hellerud and an uncle, Walter Engler.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 10, at 10 a.m. from the Lakeview Health Center Chapel, 902 E. Garland St., West Salem.
Rev. J. David Bersagel will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Friends may call at the health center chapel on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.
