Lorenz ``Tuffy'' Engebrecht
WAUSAU, Wis. - Lorenz ``Tuffy'' Engebrecht, 78, of Wausau, Wis., died Saturday, December 6, 1997 at a local nursing home. Tuffy was born December 14, 1918 in Athens, Wis., to the late Gustave and Anna (Bramm) Engebrecht.
Tuffy married Bernice (Toddy) Bauman on January 3, 1953 in Wausau, Wis. She preceded him in death on August 8, 1992.
Tuffy was a Sales Representative for Eau Claire Book and Stationary Co. for 25 years. Tuffy served in the Army Engineer Corps in World War II, from 1941 to 1945, was a 50 plus year member of Wausau Barbershoppers, and a life member of VFW Burns Post 388. Survivors include two daughters: Debra (Andrew) Dinger, La Crescent, Minn., Janet (Martin) McCowan, Minneapolis, Minn., one son: John (Diane) Engebrecht, Onalaska, Wis., two granddaughters: Marie Engebrecht and Nicole McCowan, nieces and nephews.
Tuffy was preceded in death by one son: James Paul Engebrecht, four brothers and two sisters.
Services will be held today at 6 p.m. at the Church of St. Anne in Wausau, Wis. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until the time of services at the church today. Father Steve Brice will officiate. entombment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Chapel Mausoleum at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Wausau, Wis. The Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, Wis. is in charge of arrangements.
Jane Engelien
BRANDON, S.D. - Jane Engelien, 45, of Brandon, S.D., passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, in Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Born January 22, 1952, in La Crosse to Robert and Irene (Kriesel) Schaller. A 1970 graduate of Holmen, she later attended Viterbo College and married James Engelien of Blair, on Oct. 21, 1977, in Sparta. They lived in Tomah, and Sparta, before moving to Brandon in 1985. She served as VP and secretary of their family business, Brandon Wood Preserving, Inc., in addition to working as a food service trainer at Sioux Vocational Service.
She is survived by her husband, James Engelien of Brandon, S.D.; a son, James Engelien; three daughters, Rana, Della and Tessa Engelien; one stepdaughter, Dawn (Gary) Bender; one granddaughter, Sydney; three step-grandchildren, Leanna, Allison and Neal; her mother, Irenen Schaller of Onalaska, Wis.; seven brothers, Thomas Schaller, Onalaska, Barry (Susan) Schaller, Rapid City, S.D., Jake (Marly) Schaller, Columbia, South America, Dick (Susan) Schaller, Morthbrook, Ill., Joseph (Susan) Schaller, Onalaska, Father Robert Schaller, Marshfield, Wis., and John (Barbara) Schaller, Onalaska; and four sisters, Joan Schaller, Onalaska, Judy (John) McHugh, Holmen, Wis., Janet (Ron) Bertelson, Onalaska and Joyace (Jeff) Tabbert, Brandon, S.D.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Holmen, Wis. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Blair, Wis.

WAUKON, Iowa - Frank Fred Freno Bechtel, 84, of Waukon, died on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waukon. Burial in Old West Paint Creek Cemetery.

WAUKON, Iowa - Lillian D. Ericson, 79, of Waukon, died suddenly at her home in Waukon on Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Center Baptist Church, rural Lansing, Iowa. Burial in Center Baptist Cemetery.

Dorothy B. Bratland
Dorothy B. Bratland, 94, died at the Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home on Monday, December 8, 1997.
She was born August 22, 1903, in La Crosse to Lauritz and Dorothea (Larson) Caspersen. She married Odin Bratland on June 4, 1931, and he preceded her in death on August 7, 1983.
She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Elida Petersen, Judy Christiansen and Gusta Highum; and by many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, La Crosse. The Reverend Roger Balcom will officiate and burial will be in the Rushford, Minnesota Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the service.

Herbert Carl Klemp
Herbert Carl Klemp, 83, died at Bethany St. Joseph's Nursing Home, Tuesday, December 9, 1997.
He was born August 30, 1914, to Charles and Alvina (Rhode) Klemp. He married Leone Gamuoth on February 3, 1939, in Portage, Wis. He worked for the Milwaukee Road Railroad for 43 years.
He is survived by his wife, Leone; two daughters, Ruth Ann (John) Elver of Cataula, Georgia, and Barbara (Jim) Jarrett of Stoddard, Wis.; and one son, Charles of Onalaska, Wis. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Curt (Julie) Elver of Midland, Georgia, Brett (Kim) Elver of Upatvia, Georgia, Nicki and Sara Eckland of La Crosse, Wis., Mike Jarret of Stoddard, Wis., Annette Elver of Anchorage, Alaska; two step-grandchildren, Tammy and Troy Jarret of La Crosse, Wis.; 16 great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Russell Klemp or Portage, Wis. He was preceded in death by his sister, Arlene Killian; his parents; one grandson and one great-grandson.
Services will be Friday, December 12, 1997, at 11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Reverend Rachel Mithelman will officiate and burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park.
Visistation will be Thursday, December 11, 1997, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, Gillette Street Chapel.
Sigfreed ``Sig'' Pederson
VIROQUA, Wis. - Sigfreed "Sig" Pederson, age 85, of Viroqua, died Monday, December 8, 1997, at the Bethel Home in Viroqua.
She was born in Viroqua on April 18, 1912, to Stener and Mina (Thompson) Jacobson. She graduated from Viroqua High School in 1930 and the Vernon County Normal School. She also attended La Crosse State Teachers College and taught at rural schools in the Viroqua area until about 1950. She was united in marriage to Ernest Peterson on March 10, 1934. She served as secretary and bookkeeper for the Mobil Bulk Plant in Viroqua from 1959 until 1974. Sig was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church; Royal Neighbors; Homemakers; and the Vernon County Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by one son, Steven (Cathy) Peterson of Wisconsin Rapids; one daughter, Signe Peterson of Davie, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Gloria (Gordon) Fetty of Viroqua; one son-in-law, Randy (Jan) Olson of Marshfield; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; one daughter, Ann Lee Olson; one son, Jerome Peterson; one granddaughter, Judy Buckli; one great-granddaughter, Nicole Buckli; two brothers, Art and Ray Jacobson; and two sisters, Myrtle Jacobson and Bessie Jacobs.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 12, 1997, at 11 a.m. in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. The Revs. Roger Hjelle and Stephanie Steiner will officiate with burial in Viroqua Cemetery.

Clara O. Volden
VIROQUA, Wis. - Clara O. Volden, age 87, died on Tuesday morning, December 9, 1997, at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua where she had been a resident since September 1, 1995.
She was born at rural Viroqua, on March 28, 1910, to Gilbert and Julia (Johnson) Hanson. On February 5, 1931, she married Theodore A. Volden. They lived in Viroqua, until 1948, when they farmed at Mt. Sterling and later rural Viroqua. Upon retiring they moved into Viroqua where she worked at the Bethel Nursing Home for nine years. She loved the outdoors and spread cheer wherever she went, especially with her singing. Theodore died in 1982.
She is survived by three daughters, June (Leslie) Leirmo of rural Ferryville, Mary Lou (Eston) Townsend of Viroqua and Margaret (Bob) Frank of Readstown; one son, Gerome "Jerry" (JoAnn) Volden of Viroqua; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Fauske and Mary Ellefson, both of Viroqua and Bessie (Arnold) Evenson of Florida; and three brothers, Daniel of Bangor, Joseph and Jacob "Jake" (Frances) Hanson, both of Viroqua. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Alma (Gerald) Buxton; and two brothers, William and Melford Hanson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 1997, at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, with Pastor Kimberly Riebe officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery.
