Winfred Willis Waller
HARDIES CREEK/GLASGOW, Wis. - Winfred Willis Waller, 77, passed away at La Crosse Lutheran Hospital, December 8, 1997, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Winfred was born August 19, 1920, to Lemuel and Mary (Tucker) Waller. He lived his youth and grew up helping work the family farm in the town of Gale in Trempealeau County.
On August 6, 1944, Winfred married Irene Nelson in Blair, Wisconsin. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994.
At the age of 23, he was called by his country to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served bravely in the battle of Okinawa as a machine gunner while a member of the 7th Division Infantry. He also served in Korea before being discharged, having risen to the rank of Sargent First Class. After the war, he eventually settled on the family farm where he and Irene farmed and raised their family.
For eight years, while still in good health, he enjoyed working part-time with Irene at the Riverview Inn in North Bend.
He was a member of the Hardies Creek Lutheran Church where he had served as a church council member. As his children grew, he was a supporter of the 4-H Club and the Glasgow Community Club. He was an active member of Runnerstrand-Pederson American Legion Post 354 in Ettrick.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; and four children, Renee (Robert) Ramsdell of Madison, Ronald of Fennimore, Wis., Mary (Clarence, Jr.) Bendel of Onalaska and Jeffrey at home; six grandchildren, Robert, Leah and Nathan Ramsdell, Jessica (Waller) Nowasatako, Tabatha Waller and Christopher Bendel; two sisters, Victoria (Arnold) Hanson of Osseo, Wis., and Alice Aleckson of Galesville; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was eagerly anticipating the birth of his first great-grandchild in January.
Winfred was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and five brothers.
Winfred will be remembered for his devotion to his family and community, his sense of humor, his honesty and most of all his kindness which he showed to everyone who knew him. He will be sadly missed.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Hardies Creek Lutheran Church, rural Ettrick, with the Rev. John Ashland officiating. Burial, with military rites, will follow in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at Smith Mortuary, Galesville, on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday at the church from 12:30 p.m. until services.
Shirley J. Baker
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Shirley J. Baker, 56, of West Salem, was called home to be with her Lord on Monday, December 8, 1997 after a courageous fight with brain cancer.
She was born September 24, 1941 in Ladysmith, Wis., to Kenneth and Florence (Young) Fenner. On May 6, 1967 she married Keith Baker in North Prairie, Wis. She was a past member of Bethany Evangelical Free Church and then became a founding and active member of Hope Evangelical Free Church in West Salem.
Shirley was our wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, care provider, fishing and craft partner, our friend and now our guardian angel.
Survivors include her husband, Keith; two daughters, Terri J. Baker of Seattle, Wash. and Tracy L. Baker of Sparta; a grandson, Jonah Baker of Sparta; her mother, Florence of Ladysmith; a sister, Phyllis (Guy) Kneeland of Grandview, Wis.; a brother, Gary (Barb) Fenner of Grand Island, N.Y. and seven nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and an infant daughter, Penny.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. from Bethany Evangelical Free Church, 3936 Cth. B., La Crosse. Pastor Tom Mason of Hope Evangelical Free Church, West Salem, will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery.
Friends may call at Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to establish the Shirley Baker Christian Education Scholarship Fund.

Eva M. (Stifter) Flug
Eva M. (Stifter) FlugŸEva M. (Stifter) Flug, 98, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997.
She was the wife of the late Herbert Flug; mother of Judy (Ted) Kowalski; grandmother of Toby (Cathy) Kowalski and Kate (Tyler) Dorbritz; proud great-grandmother of Jason, Diana, Nicole, Karisa, Kyle and the late Tony.
Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Heritage Funeral Home, Tebo-Peppey-Klemmer & Scheuerell Chapel, 6615 West Oklahoma Avenue, Milwaukee, Wis.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, in the funeral home. Burial will be at noon Friday, Dec. 12, in the Catholic Cemetery of La Crosse, Wis.
Eva is a former county nurse of La Crosse; and a life member of the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.

Keith A. Smith
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Keith A. Smith, age 54 years, of 480 East Tilson Street, West Salem, and formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Tuesday, December 9, 1997, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse after a courageous battle with cancer, due to complications of agent orange.
He was an 18-year veteran and served with the Navy during the Vietnam Era. He served aboard the USS Yorktown and USS Coral Sea and for 13 months, he wintered at the U.S. Naval Station at McMurdo, Antartica. He was a retired Lincoln, Nebraska, firefighter and 911 emergency member and before his illness was employed at Pischke Motors in West Salem. He married Barbara Baker Nehman on August 20, 1994, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of West Salem; his mother-in-law, Jeanette Baker of Onalaska; one son, Michael (Kyla) Smith of Mesa, Arizona; one daughter, Wendy Smith of Mesa, Arizona; one brother, K.B. (Sue) Smith of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sisters, Billie Busch and Phyllis (Eugene) Farleigh, both of Lincoln, Nebraska; one stepson, Robert Nehman of Portland, Oregon; two stepdaughters, Cameron (Don) Schreier of Lincoln, Nebraska and Cynthia Clemens of Charles City, Iowa; one step grandson, Jacob Schreier; one step granddaughter, Breanna Schreier; two brothers-in-law, Russ Baker of West Salem and Richard (Melinda) Baker of Pepin, Wis.; his life long school buddy, Darrell Best of Lincoln, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one stepdaughter, Michelle Nehman.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 1997, at the Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska. Rev. Caroline Garman will officiate. Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Onalaska Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the West Salem American Legion Berg-Hemker-Olson Post No. 51.
Friends may call at the Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska on Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of services. Masonic services by the Onalaska Masonic Lodge No. 214 F&AM will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Martha T. Zok
INDEPENDENCE, Wis. - Martha T. Zok, 82, of Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at Burlington Memorial Hospital in Burlington, Wis.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Edison Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 8 p.m.
Herbert Carl Klemp
Herbert Carl Klemp, 83, died at Bethany St. Joseph's Nursing Home, Tuesday, December 9, 1997.
He was born August 30, 1914, to Charles and Alvina (Rhode) Klemp. He married Leone Gamroth on February 3, 1939, in Portage, Wis. He worked for the Milwaukee Road Railroad for 43 years.
He is survived by his wife, Leone; two daughters, Ruth Ann (John) Elver of Cataula, Georgia, and Barbara (Jim) Jarrett of Stoddard, Wis.; and one son, Charles of Onalaska, Wis. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Curt (Julie) Elver of Midland, Georgia, Brett (Kim) Elver of Upatoia, Georgia, Nicki and Sara Eckland of La Crosse, Wis., Mike Jarrett of Stoddard, Wis., Annette Elver of Anchorage, Alaska; two step-grandchildren, Tammy and Troy Jarrett of La Crosse, Wis.; 6 great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Russell Klemp or Portage, Wis. He was preceded in death by his sister, Arlene Killian; his parents; one grandson and one great-grandson.
Services will be Friday, December 12, 1997, at 11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Reverend Rachel Mithelman will officiate and burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 11, 1997, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, Gillette Street Chapel.
Fred C. Sentz
Fred C. Sentz, 80, passed away at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital on Tuesday, December 9, 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Bettie; and three children, Daniel (Patricia) of Wasilla, Alaska, Diana (Richard) Rowe of Niceville, Florida, Karen (Randall) Condit of La Crosse; and grandchildren, Cameron and Laura Rowe, and Lindsey and Adam Condit.
He moved to La Crosse one year ago to be closer to his children.
The funeral will be held in Milwaukee, Wis., his lifelong residence.
He will be greatly missed.

ARCADIA, Wis. - Helen Schmitt, 82, of Arcadia, Wis., died on Friday, Dec. 12, 1997 at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, Arcadia.
Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Monday in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, where there will be a 7 p.m. Rosary; and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
