Geraldine Halverson
HOUSTON, Minn. - Geraldine Halverson, 75, died Monday, November 30, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Geraldine Swenson was born March 28, 1923, in Sheldon, Minn., to Jorgen and Vivian (Carrier) Swenson. On Jan. 9, 1943, she married Ernest Halverson in Winona, Minn. He later died Oct. 29, 1982. Geraldine worked for 24 years with Ace Telephone in Houston, retiring as assistant data processing supervisor in 1983. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Houston. Geraldine will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all.
Geraldine is survived by two daughters, Leslie Guggenberger of Fort Collins, Colo., and LeeAnn (Robert) Gustavson of Thornton, Colo.; one grandson, Adam Guggenberger; three sisters, Betty (Gordon) Hatleli of Rushford, Minn., Ramona (Hollace) Huebner of Houston, Minn., and Theresa (Allton) Peterson of Houston, Minn.; an aunt, Myrtle Sweet of Houston, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ernest; and one brother, Guy Swenson.
Funeral services are planned for Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, with the Reverend Mark Rydberg officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery in Houston. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Dorothy E. Weiland
Dorothy E. Weiland, 79, a resident of Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in the Care Center.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, La Crosse.
Shirley M. Thompson
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Shirley M. Thompson, 41, of West Salem, and formerly of Ontario, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at her home in West Salem. She was born Feb. 4, 1957, in Viroqua, to Ivan and Dorothy (Manley) Hutchison.
Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Cheryl (Eirik) Ekness of Ontario, and Sharon Hemmersbach of Cashton; and one brother, Larry (Rita) Hutchison also of Cashton; four nieces; and four nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at 11 a.m. from the Torkelson Funeral Home in Ontario.
Pastor Robert Streeter will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Hilltop Rest Cemetery in Ontario. Relatives and friends may call at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Ontario Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m. They may also call at the funeral home on Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
Hilda B. Riddle
LAfARGE, Wis. - Hilda B. Riddle, 71, of Canyon Ave., rural LaFarge, died Monday, Nov./ 30, 1998, in her home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, in the Burr Wesleyan Church, rural Hillsboro.
Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in Valhalla Memorial Park, Milwaukee.
Friends may call at Seland Funeral Home, LaFarge from 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.; and also from noon until the time of service Friday in the church.

Richard M. Ender
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Richard M. Ender, 66, of west Salem, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at his home. He was born Oct. 27, 1932, in La Crosse, to Edward and Elizabeth (Hausmann) Ender. On Aug. 11, 1956, he married Joyce M. Shaker in La Crosse and she preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 1991. He then married Charlotte Cantwelll on Feb. 24, 1994, in La Crosse. For 35 years, Richard was a journeyman electrician with the IBEW Local Union 14 and served as recording secretary for many years. Richard was instrumental in starting the West Salem First responders. He was involved with the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department, civil defense and scouts. Richard was a member of Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 in West Salem. His favorite hobby was his job as an electrician. Richard also enjoyed the outdoors and spending time in Northern Minnesota, especially by Lake Superior.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; three daughters, Paula (John) Callies of River Falls, Wis., Mary (Jim) Timmons of Ripon, Wis., and Patti Ender of Eau Claire, Wis.; two sons, John of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Steve of La Crosse; seven grandchildren, Tess and Kelly, Jason and Jake, and Ryan, and Lee and Jacqueline; a sister, Elizabeth Mitchell of La Crosse; and two step children, Charles (Wendy) Cantwell of St. Cloud, Minn., and Andrew Cantwell of Chicago, Ill. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Samantha Timmons; two sisters, Ruth Hauser, and Bernice Percick; and four brothers, Walter, Rudolph, Martin, and LeRoy Ender.
Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at 1 p.m. from the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem. Sue Hulse, Chaplain, will officiate. A private family burial will be at a later date in Hamilton Cemetery, West Salem. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from noon until the time of service. Doris E. Homstad-Power
VIROQUA, Wis. - Doris E. Homstad-Power, age 77, of Viroqua, passed away at her home in Viroqua, on Wed., Dec. 2, 1998. She was born on Oct. 7, 1921 to Oscar and Amalia (Oium) Homstad. She attended Chaseburg Grade School and was a graduate of Vernon Co. Normal School. Doris also attended U.W.-La Crosse and received her Master's Degree from Winona State University. She taught in Vernon Co. rural schools, and also taught in Westby, Wis., Sparta, Wis., Edgerton, Wis., Boulder City, Nev., and Amberg, Germany. She retired in 1983 from Hamilton School in La Crosse, WI, after teaching for 30 years in the La Crosse School District. She was confirmed at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chaseburg, and was a faithful member of the English Evangelical Lutheran Church-WELS in Viroqua. Doris was a member of Viroqua and La Crosse Retired Teachers Assn.; Delta Kappa Gamma; Vernon Co. Historical Society; V.F.W. Auxiliary; Sons of Norway, Norskedalen; and the Ladies Aid of the English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Viroqua. On Feb. 5, 1986, she was united in marriage to Ralph Power in the English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Viroqua. He preceded her in death on Jan.9, 1995.
She is survived by her two sisters, Agnes (Mrs. Cleo) Schroeder and Irene Homstad, both of Viroqua; one brother, William (Alice) Homstad of La Crosse; four step daughters, Mary Power and her husband David Suplinski of Colo., Linda (Bernie) Shomberg and Trish Power, both of Fla., and Caroline Power of La.; seven step grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Edith Homstad of Texas and Jean Power of Sparta; 13 nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers; Robert in infancy and Milnor; one grand niece; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Brewer; and her brother-in-law, Cleo Schroeder.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the English Evangelical Lutheran Church-WELS, 741 N. East Ave. in Viroqua. Pastor Dennis E. Kempf will officiate with burial in the North Coon Prairie Cemetery at Newry. Friends may call on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby. Friends may also call after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the English Lutheran Church Building Fund or the Vernon Memorial Hospice.

WILTON, Wis. - Karen J. Gruen, 48, of Wilton, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wilton, with burial in the church cemetery.

Anna Marie Karasch, infant daughter of Gary and Linda (Gunderson) Karasch, Mondovi, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire.

Dean A. Herrmann
WAUKON, Iowa - Dean A. Herrmann, 50, of Waukon, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in Veteran's Memorial Hospital, Waukon.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, in Martin Funeral Home, Waukon.
Burial will be in Postville Cemetery, Postville.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Howard L. Tjoflat
Howard was born Oct. 5, 1911, in Ettrick, Wis., to Amund and Eleanora (Torkelson) Tjoflat. He graduated from the Galesville High School.
Howard married Carolyn Nyberg on May 3, 1931, in Blair, Wis. Together they farmed first in rural Strum, then rural Blair, and later in rural Ettrick. They retired in 1982 and moved to Whitehall. Carolyn preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 1995. Howard has been a resident of the Grand View Care Center in Blair since 1996.
Mr. Tjoflat was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Whitehall, where he sang in the church choir. Howard will be long remembered for his beautiful tenor voice and the hundreds of funerals and weddings he performed for. Even as a senior citizen, he warmed many hearts with his special gift.
Among Howard's memories of his youth was the ringing of the church bell to inform the Ettrick townspeople that World Was I has ended on that first Armistice Day in 1918.
As an adult, he was a progressive farmer and was an active member of the National Farmer's Organization. Howard was a strong supporter of education and was devoted to his family and church.
Mr. Tjoflat is survived by three sons, Kenneth (Margaret) and David (Cindy) Tjoflat both of rural Ettrick, Wis., and William (Maureen) Tjoflat of Green Bay, Wis.; four daughters, Jean Tjoflat of Hopkins, Minn., Anitta (Robert) Back of Iron Ridge, Wis., Ellen (Jeff) Hauser of Whitehall, Wis., and Mary (Larry) George of Bloomington, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents; and wife; Howard was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald, Oliver, and J. Kenneth Tjoflat; and two sisters, Bergliot Erickson, and Viola Tjoflat.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at 11 a.m. in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Whitehall, Wis. Revs. LaMoine Jacobs and Richard Kelling will officiate. Burial will be in the Pioneer Cemetery in rural Ettrick.
Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in White Hall, Wis., and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.
