Raymond P. Nontelle
Raymond P. Nontelle, 89, of La Crosse, died at the Hillview Health Care Center on Saturday, October 18, 1997.
He was born in Taconite, Minnesota, on February 22, 1908 to Joseph and Laurel (Bedard) Nontelle. He was raised in Bark River, Michigan. He later moved to Schofield, Wisconsin, where he became a motorcycle police officer. He married Martha "Marty" Berlik on November 26, 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wausau. While working for the North Atlantic Constructors, in 1952, he crafted a tabernacle for the chapel at Sondrestrom Air Base at Thule, Greenland, for which he received the Papal Medallion from Pope Pius XII. He worked for many years as a craftsman, welder, home builder, and cabinet maker. Raymond had been employed with Allis Chalmers, Torrance Foundry, La Crosse Trailor Co., and Warner-Swaze in Winona. Raymond was a charter member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in La Crosse and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #1920. He was an avid sportsman, a gifted storyteller and musician.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marty; three daughters, Mary Ellen (Rudy) Schmidt of La Crosse, Deanna (Douglas) Hart of La Crosse, and Gloria Weisbecker of La Crosse; two sons, Donald (Deon) Nontelle of La Crosse, and Robert (Kathy) Nontelle of La Crosse; a loving grandfather to 15 grandchildren, Steve Schmidt of Menomonee Falls, Sue Schmidt of Milwaukee, Jeanne (Ken) Wead of Cedarburg, Jim (Ramona) Schmidt of Bangor, David Hart of Dallas, Texas, Dana (Jeff) White of San Francisco, Dawn Hart of La Crosse, Dean (Jean Geiwitz) Hart of Holmen, Kelly (Bill) Worner of Oklahoma City, Okla., Colleen Schlueter of Oklahoma City, Okla., Marc, Brandon, Nichole Nontelle, all of La Crosse, Kathleen Weisbecker of Portland, Oregon, and John Weisbecker of Minneapolis; seven great-grandchildren, Melissa Wead of Cedarburg, Alex and Ethan Schmidt of Bangor, Seamus White of San Francisco, Dustin and Hunter Hart of Holmen and Kaitlyn Worner of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four sisters, Marcella Degeneffe of Merrillville, Indiana, Margaret Luskin of Wyoming, Michigan, Yetive Derouin of Escanaba, Michigan, and Madeline McCann of River Falls, Wisconsin; a son-in-law, Curtis (Joan) Schlueter of Winona.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, James; a daughter, Judith Schlueter; two granddaughters, Deborah Hart and Maria Laurel Schmidt; a great-grandson, Nicholas Brian Hart; five sisters, Sister Mary Medarde S.S.N.D., Marie Engh, Christina, Irene and Thresella Nontelle; four brothers, Cyril, Joseph, Woodrow, and Leo Nontelle.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church. The Reverend Joseph J. Rafacz will officiate and burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street, on Monday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the service. A scripture service will be held on Monday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Alice C. Schmidtknecht
WAUMANDEE, Wis. - Alice C. Schmidtknecht, 81, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare/Arcadia Hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Waumandee.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church, with an 8 p.m. prayer service; and from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
Wozney Funeral Home, Arcadia, is assisting with the arrangements.
Grace C. Omodt
HOUSTON, Minn. - Grace C. Omodt, age 92, of Houston, died Saturday, October 18, 1997 at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
She was born on January 20, 1905, in rural Caledonia, to Joshua and Sigri (Odejord) Heintz and raised there. She lived in the Houston area all of her adult life. She married Harris Omodt on December 16, 1941 in Minneapolis.
She is survived by her husband, Harris; one daughter, Lucille (Richard) Omodt Crow of Excelsior, Minn.; three grandchildren, David of Burnsville, Bennet of Excelsior, and Andrew of Excelsior; six nieces and nephews, Jerry, Barton, and Wayne Heintz of Caledonia, Donald Heintz of La Crescent, Marcia Fischer of Lewiston, Karen Bangs of Cresco, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Scheich, and Mrs. Olga Heintz of Caledonia. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lloyd, Erlin, and Everett Heintz.
Funeral services are at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, October 20, at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Houston with Rev. T. Wayne Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Money Creek Cemetery in Money Creek. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel and also one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
Malinda J. Sandvick
DESOTO, Wis. - Malinda J. Sandvick, age 32, died Sunday morning, November 30, 1997, at her home in the Town of Wheatland, rural DeSoto of cancer. She was born on February 19, 1965, in Prairie du Chien to Gerald D. and Dawn (Caja) Grimsled, Sr. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua and attended Viroqua High School. On January 28, 1984, she married Kenneth Sandvick. She was an avid outdoors person raising, peacocks, pigeons, horses, and a large garden. Although ill, she went deer hunting this past season and got her deer of which she was very proud.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, one daughter, Ashley and one son, Jesse, both at home, her parents, Gerald and Dawn Grimsled, of Viroqua, two brothers, Gerald ``Bucky'' Grimsled, of Wisconsin Dells, Barry (Jean) Grimsled of Westby, two sisters, Heather (Carlyle) Hoff, of Cashton, Amy Grimsled and her fiancee, Kurt Baumgartner, of Westby, her paternal grandmother, Camilla Grimsled of Viroqua, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 1997 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua, with Rev. Dr. Steven Fossum officiating. Friends may call at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua. from 5 to 8 p.m on Wednesday evening, December 3, 1997. Friends may also call at the church from noon until time of service on Thursday.
Lorraine F. Baker
VIROQUA, Wis. - Lorraine F. Baker, age 69, of 507 Nelson Court in Viroqua, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, November 29, 1997 in her home after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Milwaukee, on June 19, 1928, to Benjamin and Emelia (Borowski) Jankowski. The family moved to Chicago in the late 1930's. On December 22, 1959, she married Earl Baker in Chicago. In 1969, they moved to Viroqua. She was an active member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Viroqua.
She is survived by her husband, Earl, one son, Mark (Linda) Baker, of Viroqua, one daughter, Tricia (Christopher) Rost, of Viroqua, seven grandchildren, two brothers, Ervin (Beth) Jankowski, of Greer, S.C., Norbert (Edith) Jankowski, of Chicago, Ill., one sister, Delores Wyatt, of Rockford, Ill., other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Irene Wedeking and Gertrude Jankowski.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday morning, December 3, 1997 at the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Viroqua, with Pastor Roy Tellier officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church after 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
Stephen A. Hauser
BRODBECK, PA. - Stephen A. Hauser, age 48, of Brodbeck, PA, former graduate of Holmen High School, died Wednesday, November 26, 1997 in his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Sand Lake Coulee to Eugene and Irene (Sobkowiak) Hauser on July 15, 1949. He was a graduate of UW-La Crosse and was currently employed as plant manager at Wampler-Longacre, Inc. (Round Hill Foods), New Oxford, PA. On February 5, 1982, he was united in marriage to Nancy Fissel of Brodbeck, PA.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, three children, Margaret, David and Andrew, all at home. His parents, Eugene and Irene Hauser, seven brothers, Kirk (Sue), Ron (Sue), Lonnie (Jackie), Stanley (Diane), Russell (Cindy), Hugh (Kathy), Kenneth (Jolene), three sisters, Susan (Robert) VanRiper, Barbara (John) Snyder, Kristine (Steve) Visher, maternal grandmother, Lillian Sobkowiak, many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Margurite Hauser, and his maternal grandfather, Walter Sobkowiak.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 1997 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1031 Main St., Onalaska. Fr. Wm. J. Matzek will officiate.
Steve loved his family, friends, work, his garden and golf. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Robert A. Schmidt
BOSCOBEL, Wis. - Robert A. Schmidt, age 74, of Boscobel, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 1997 at the Prairie Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wis.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997 at 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Boscobel. Father John Urban officiating.
Private burial in the Boscobel Cemetery.
Friends may call on Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Boscobel from 4 p.m. until services at 7 p.m.
Military service conducted by the Boscobel American Legion and VFW.
In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to the Boscobel Rescue Squad, Boscobel Fire Dept. or the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Boscobel.
Margaret Bergum
WESTBY, Wis. - Margaret Bergum, age 85, of Westby, died Sunday, November 30, 1997 at the Norseland Nursing Home in Westby.
Services tentatively scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m.
