Edward R. Calvert
ONALASKA, Wis. - Edward R. Calvert, age 97, formerly of Onalaska, died Thursday, October 9, 1997 at the Columbia Hoffman Estates Medical Center, Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
He was born July 22, 1900 in Newark, New Jersey, to Frederick and Ida (Spitzer) Calvert.
He married Mareta Smith and she preceded him in death on December 16, 1994.
Funeral Services will be Monday, October 13, 1997 at 11:30 a.m. at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main Street, Onalaska. Fran Browning, Pastoral Care Coordinator of the funeral home will officiate.
Burial will be in the Onalaska Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Captain Gregory A. Bushnell
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Captain Gregory A. Bushnell, U.S. Navy (Ret.) died suddenly in his Rancho Bernardo home on October 8, 1997.
Capt. Bushnell was a senior executive responsible for systems development at Advanced Telecommunications, Inc. Information Sciences and Simulation Division in San Diego, Calif. He joined ATI in February 1997, after a 27-year Navy career which culminated as Dean of Students at the Navy Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif. Prior to that assignment, he was Chief of Staff for the Commander, Fleet Air Western Pacific in Atsugi, Japan.
Capt. Bushnell, the son of Vernon and Geneva (formerly Elsie Wright) Bushnell of Rancho Bernardo, Calif. and formerly of La Crosse, Wis. was born in Brookings, S.D. in 1946. He graduated from Logan High School in La Crosse, Wis., earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from California State University Fullerton, earned postgraduate degrees in management and human relations from Webster University and completed graduate studies at the Naval War College.
Capt. Bushnell earned his Naval Aviator designation in 1968 and served in Patrol Squadron 17, Training Squadron 28, Patrol Squadron 50 and was commanding officer of Patrol Squadron 48. He also served aboard USS Ranger and earned surface warfare qualifications. His shore assignments included duty with the Chief of Naval Personnel, the Chief of Naval Operations (Manpower), the Commander, Patrol Wings Pacific, and the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as well as his overseas tours.
Capt. Bushnell was the recipient of a number of military personal awards and decorations, including the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal. He also received a lifesaving medal from the Prime Minister of Japan.
Capt. Bushnell was a devoted father and husband, and his wife, Kishie, was active in Navy community activities wherever he was stationed. His principle pastime was the pursuit of his interests in Japanese history, culture and antiques.
He leaves his wife of 30 years, the former Linda Kish "Kishie" of La Crosse; his daughter, Stacy (Mrs. Mike Ruffell) of Laguna Niquel, Calif.; his mother, Geneva; his brother, John of Poway, Calif.; his brother, Willit of Wasilla, Alaska; and a sister, Becky (married to Dr. Bill Sullenberger) of Walnut, Calif.
A military memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 1997 at Fort Rosecrans in San Diego. The family wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the nearest chapter of Navy Relief Society.
Suzanne 'Suzie' H. Hium
VIROQUA, Wis. - Suzanne "Suzie" H. Hium, age 54, of Viroqua, died on Friday morning, October 10, 1997 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born in La Crosse, on July 11, 1943 to Raymond and Helen (Forer) Springer, Sr. She was raised in the Stoddard area and on October 21, 1967, married Paul Hium at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Viroqua. They have lived in Viroqua since that time.
She is survived by her husband, Paul and son, Raymond Hium, both of Viroqua; four sisters, Diane (Thomas) Elsen of Coon Valley, Carol (Harvey "Lee") Cade, Linda (Marvin) Elsen, both of Stoddard, Mary (Doug) Domnie of La Crosse; four brothers, Larry Springer of Stoughton, Raymond (Cindy) Springer of Beloit, Steven (Julie) Springer of Stoddard, Daniel (Janice) Springer of La Crosse; many nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 1997 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Viroqua, with Father James Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery. Edna M. Gilbertson
Edna M. Gilbertson, age 57, of La Crosse, died in her home, October 9, 1997. She was born March 19, 1940 in Racine, Wis., to Raymond and Martha (Kramer) Norup. She married Chauncey Gilbertson, April 22, 1961 in Waukon, Iowa. She retired from La Crosse Footwear after working there from 1974 until her retirement in 1995. She is survived by her husband, Chauncey; one daughter, Susan (Steven) Dolan of Holmen; four sons, Robert, Joseph Michael, Gary "Jim" and Jeffrey, all of La Crosse. She is further survived by seven grandchildren, Timothy, Matthew, Christopher Dolen, Kimberly and Travis Steers and Joseph Tyler and Michael Walter Gilbertson; and one niece, Deborah Gilman. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Dorothy Gilman. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 1997 at the Nelson-Woodruff-Blaschke Funeral Home, 1007 Caledonia St., La Crosse, Wis. Rev. Dean Staffanson will officiate with burial in the Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Rain R. Stein
GALESVILLE/LA CROSSE - Rain R. Stein, 20, of Galesville/La Crosse, died Friday, October 10, 1997 as a result of a car accident at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. She was born in La Crosse on November 8, 1976 to Lauren and Darla (Chamberlain) Stein. She worked at Northern Engraving at Galesville before her death. She is survived by her mother Darla Stein of La Crosse; one daughter, Misty Rain Garcia of Wauzeka; five sisters, LeAnne (Edward) Milde of Guttenburg, Iowa, Dawn Tyler, Hail Stein, both of La Crosse, Wind Stein of Ettrick, Barb Stein of Galesville; four brothers, Willard Tyler of Winnebago, Gene Tyler of Lynxville, Nick Stein of Soldiers Grove, Shane Stein of Wauzeka; six nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 13, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the Nelson-Woodruff-Blaschke Funeral Home, 1007 Caledonia St. The Rev. Andrew K. Marie I. McKevitt
MERRILLAN, Wis. - Marie I. McKevitt, 83, formerly of Merrillan, died on Thursday, October 9, 1997, at Family Heritage Care Center where she had resided for the past eighteen months.
She was born on February 16, 1914, in Merrillan, to parents Byron and Augusta (Buttke) Rhoades.
She graduated from high school in Merrillan and married Howard "Gene" McKevitt on September 11, 1936, in Merrillan.
She worked for her brother, Leslie, for many years in the Leslie B. Rhoades & Son Christmas tree and seed business.
She was a member of the Merrillan Methodist Church and also the American Legion Auxiliary in Merrillan.
She was an avid sports fan, especially of the Packers as well as the local sports teams.
Marie was a very compassionate woman. She raised her husband's two half-brothers, Forrest and William De Lapp, her own two sons, and her grandson, Daniel, upon the ultimately death of his parents.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, on February 6, 1989; her son Barrie, daughter-in-law Mary and granddaughter Luanne on February 14, 1962; her half-brother Harry Rhoades and brother Leslie Rhoades.
She is survived by her son, Michael "Mick" (Jean) McKevitt of Two Rivers; sister Hattie Rosenberger of Merrillan; grandsons Daniel (Carrie), Todd (Jackie), Micky (Cori) and Patrick (Angela) McKevitt and step-granddaughter Tammy Tester; and great-grandchildren Joshua, Andrew, Caitlin, Ericka, Nickolas, Dylan, Daryn and Brandon.
Funeral services for Marie I. McKevitt will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 1997, at the United Methodist Church in Merrillan, with Reverend William Swan officiating.
Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery, Merrillan.

Ronald J. Wehrenberg
APPLE VALLEY, Minn. - Ronald J. Wehrenberg, 64, of Apple Valley, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997.
Survived by his wife, Nona Lee Wehrenberg; sons Steven (Susan) Wehrenberg of Apple Valley, and David Wehrenberg of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Rhonda (Kirk) Neal of Folsom, Calif.; grandchildren, Scott, Sarah, and Stephanie Wehrenberg, and Kylie Neal; brothers, Richard (Bonnie) Wehrenberg of Salem, Wis., and Wilbert (Alyce) of La Crosse; sisters, Elaine (Edwards) of Waco, Texas, Barbara (Bernard) Poellinger of La Crosse, Sandra (Alan) Ash of Carrollton, Susan (Daniel) Butterfield of La Crescent, Minn.; sister-in-law, Alice Wehrenberg of La Crosse. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert and Mae Wehrenberg, and one brother Loren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (151 E. Cty. Road 42), Burnsville.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at White Funeral Home (146 Pennock); and one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment will be at Fort Snelling.

Robert Eulgem, Jr.
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Robert Eulgem, Jr., 83, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., died suddenly Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, in the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, Prairie du Chien.
Interment will be in the National Cemetery, Eastman.

Bessie M. Sisbach
VIROQUA, Wis. - Bessie M. Sisbach, age 104, of Viroqua, died Friday, October 3, 1997 at the Bethel Home in Viroqua, where she had been a resident since February of 1995.
She was born May 21, 1893 on Asbury Ridge near Viroqua, to Reinhold and Laura (Wiganowsky) Somerfield. She married William Sisbach on November 25, 1916. They farmed on Belgium Ridge, Jefferson Township, all their married life. Bessie was a member of the Viroqua United Methodist Church and the Eve Circle. She was also a long standing member of the local Women's Relief Corp.
She is survived by two daughters, Laurean Walby of Viroqua, and Esther (Wayne) Cook of Viroqua; eight grandchildren, Laura (Glen) Weichelt of Foristell, Mo., Janet (Randy) Leiske of Fullerton, Calif., Jayne (Larry) Link of Lenoir City, Tenn., Carl (Brenda) Walby of Greenville, Wis., Barbara (Michael) Leis of Juneau, Wis., Susan (David) Schreiner of La Crosse, Joan (Carl) Lind of Onalaska, and Paul Cook of Milwaukee; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, William on October 14, 1975; four brothers, Otto, Oscar, Walter, and Leo; two sisters, Julia Heck, and Cora Reed; a son-in-law, Fred Walby; and a grandson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 7, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Viroqua United Methodist Church. Pastor Frank Thompson will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua, on Monday, October 6, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday after 10 a.m. Memorials may be given to the Viroqua United Methodist Church or the Bethel Home.
