Victor Laveau
Victor Laveau, 93, of Stoughton and formerly of the Sarona area, died March 18 at the home of his daughter in Stoughton.
Mr. Laveau was born on Dec. 9, 1904 in Rice Lake to Joseph and Caroline (Coon) Laveau. He lived and farmed most of his life in the Sarona and Rice Lake areas. On June 21, 1927 he married Clara Magnus in Rice Lake. In 1955 he became caretaker and Clara became the cook and dietitian of the Audubon Camp of Sarona, land he had previously farmed. Clara died in 1964, and on Oct. 19, 1968 he married Ada Dickson. The couple continued to work at the Audubon Camp until 1970, when Mr. Laveau retired and the couple moved to California. There he worked as a substitute janitor in the Brea School District and later for the Sjostedt Yard and Garden Care. He also did yard work for many neighbors until returning to Stoughton in 1992 to live with his daughter, Eunice.
He is survived by his wife, Ada, of Brea Calif.; two daughters, Eunice Laveau of Stoughton, and Hazel McKennon of Seabeck, Wash.; a son, Victor of Anaheim, Calif; three stepchildren; a sister, Hazel Drake of Spooner; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. Mr. Laveau was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Gladys Mae; and a grandson, Eugene Brown.
Marion Martin
Marion Martin, mother of Mary Hoeft and grandmother of Ryan and Kelly Hoeft, died March 17.
She was born in Oshkosh to Frank and Marie Schneider and married Norbert Martin in 1944.
She worked for more than 30 years at the First National Bank in Oshkosh, where she was a guard on the Women's All-Star basketball team and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oshkosh.
Her interests included playing bridge, caring for animals and giving basketball advice to her grandchildren.
She moved to Rice Lake in 1986 to be closer to her family.
Chester O'Dell
Chester J. O'Dell, 82, of Oceanside, Calif., and a former area businessman, died there April 5.
Mr. O'Dell was born in Colorado on June 4, 1915. He graduated from Longmont (Colo.) High School and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. He married Evelyn Nelson in Minneapolis in1939. He traveled the northeast for Pillsbury Mills, owned a Shell bulk plant in Rice Lake and retail bakeries in Chicago, Ill., and Madison. He was a member of the Eau Claire Consistery and Zor Shrine and had received Scouting's Silver Beaver award. The couple lived in Madison for 30 years before moving to Oceanside 12 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two sons, Donald of Middleton and James of Oceanside; two grandchildren; and a sister, Marilene Crooker of The Dalles, Ore.
Ethyl Olson
Ethyl Marie Olson, 68, of Barron died March 30 at the Terraceview Living Center in Shell Lake. Ms. Olson was born on Dec. 19, 1929 in Rice Lake to Oscar and Nora (Horind) Olson. She lived at AG-RI Cove and at Melody Manor in Barron until March 3, 1998, when she became a resident of Terraceview Living Center. She is survived by a brother, Wallace of Spooner; two sisters, Donna Van Helden of Eau Claire and Marvel Flodquist of Elk River, Minn., and nieces and nephews.
Violet Olson
Violet Elizabeth Olson, 75, of Fond du Lac died in Phoenix, Ariz., on March 29.
Mrs. Olson was born in Poskin to Peter and Annie Peterson. On Oct. 4, 1942 she married Wayne Olson, and they lived in the Poskin area for many years before moving to Fond du Lac. She was a member of a circle at the Methodist Church and had volunteered for 12 years at the Americana Nursing Home there. She enjoyed daily walks with her husband and wintering in Phoenix. The couple had volunteered for many years with nutritional meals to the homebound.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne; a daughter, Eva of Rice Lake; two sons, Bill of Phoenix, and Jim of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren; a brother, Eugene of Poskin; a sister, Carlotta Siewert of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and her mother-in-law, Myrtie.
Dorothy Orsund
Dorothy Alice Orsund, of Cupertino Calif., and formerly of Rice Lake died March 26 in Cupertino, Calif.
Ms. Orsund was born Aug. 19, 1910 to Rikka and Chris Orsund on their farm in The Town of Doyle. She graduated from Rice Lake High School and worked as a secretary in Rice Lake and Stevens Point for several years. She later moved to Los Angeles and in 1969 to Yorba Linda, Calif. She was part owner of Thoro'Bred Racing Plates, a company that makes horseshoes for thoroughbred racehorses, where she worked until retiring in 1967. In March1995 she moved to Cupertino to be near her sister, Gertrude Hathaway, who died in 1996, and her niece, Lillian Jeffery of San Jose, Calif. After a car accident in the fall of 1996, she moved to the Sunny View nursing facility. Ms. Orsund loved to read and travel. She had visited much of the world by cruise ship.
She is survived by her niece, Lillian Jeffery, five great-nieces and nephews and 11 great-great nieces and nephews.
Russell Popple
Russell E. Popple, 31, of Madison and formerly of Reedsburg, died April 13 at his home in Madison.
Mr. Popple was born March 18, 1967 in Duluth, Minn., to Patricia and Roger Popple. He grew up in Reedsburg, where he graduated from Webb High School in 1985. He graduated from UW-Plattville in 1990 with a degree in broadcast journalism and worked as an assistant to Senator Kasten in Washington, D.C., until 1993. He then moved to Madison and worked at various jobs while attending classes at UW-Madison to prepare for medical school.
He is survived by his parents, Patricia and Roger of Rice Lake; three brothers, Mitchell of Aurora, Colo., Daniel of Madison, and Matthew of Rice Lake; two sisters, Dana Morlock of Prior Lake, Minn., and Karen Popple, a student at UW-River Falls; and his maternal grandmother, Annice Jensen of Altoona.
Alice Ritter
Alice L. Ritter, 86, of Prairie Farm died April 6 at the Pioneer Nursing Home there.
Arnold Rockow Arnold D. Rockow, 72, of Barron died April 3 at Barron Medical Center's extended care unit. Mr. Rockow was born on Aug. 28, 1925 in Hamilton County, Iowa, to John and Agnes (Lentz) Rockow. He grew up there and moved to the Poskin area with his parents at the age of 18. He farmed, was in the machinery salvage business for many years, and moved into the City of Barron in 1985.
He is survived by his mother, Agnes of Barron; two brothers, Melvin of Chippewa Falls and John of Cumberland; and many nieces and nephews.
