Michael J. Linehan, Sr.
TOMAH, Wis. - Michael J. Linehan, Sr., age 77, of rural Tomah, died Friday, January 9, 1998 at the Tomah Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 6, 1920 in Tomah, Wis. to Michael and Anna (Schmieder) Linehan. Michael took over the family farm in Reels Valley and farmed there all his life. He was on the Wisconsin Dairies Board of Directors. He was a life time member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tomah.
He is survived by two sons, Michael J. (Debra) Linehan of Tomah, and David (Karleen) Linehan of Tomah; four daughters, Kristine (Larry) Abbs of Tomah, Nancy (Ray) Olsen of Tomah, Susan (Larry) Rezin of Warrens, and Mary Linehan of Tomah; one sister, Helen (Harley) Kennedy of Tomah; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents, Michael and Anna, and two sisters, Francis Bailey and Anna Mae Linehan.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 12, 1998, 11 a.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tomah. Father Daniel Kozlowski will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Ninneman-Steele Funeral Home in Tomah. Friends may also call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. The Ninneman-Steele Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Clyde L. Gilbertson
BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Clyde L. Gilbertson, Sr., age 67, of rural Black River Falls, died late Wednesday evening, Jan. 7, 1998 in his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. Burial will be in the Sullivan Cemetery, rural Black River Falls. Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mary E. Simdars
Mary E. Simdars, 87, of Bethany St. Joseph Care Center, died Friday, January 9, 1998 at Franciscan Skemp Health Care Center.
She was born to John and Maude (Mousseau) Horihan on December 16, 1910. She married Erwin Dimdars on May 5, 1937 in La Crosse.
Mary is survived by a daughter, Mary Lou (Gerald) Lenz of Avon, Minn.; a son, William (Cindy) Simdars of Onalaska, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, son John, and one sister.
Funeral services will be on Monday, January 12, 1998 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 3 p.m. Visitation will take place on Monday at the Sletten McKee Hanson Funeral Home from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Private burial will be in Catholic Cemetery.
Mary was a resident of Bethany St. Joseph Care Center for the past year. She was involved in many community and church organizations. She was also a volunteer at St. Francis Hospital.
Guida B. Clements
VIROQUA, Wis. - Guida B. Clements, age 100, of Viroqua, died Friday, January 9, 1998 at the Vernon Manor in Viroqua where she had resided since this past Monday.
She was born in Franklin Township, Vernon County on December 6, 1897 to Charles and Mary (Deaver) Latta. She was united in marriage to Nick Clements on November 5, 1919. They farmed in Franklin Township all their married years. Nick died on March 16, 1971. Guida was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Viroqua.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary (Roy) Myhre of Chaseburg; two sons, Russell Clements of Viroqua, and Kenneth (Mary) Clements of Tomahawk; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one son, Nick in infancy; and one sister, Ethel Simonson.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 12, 1998 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Viroqua. Father James Miller will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. with a prayer service at 5 p.m. Visitation also at the church on Monday after 10 a.m.
Howard Otto Anderson
SPARTA/VIROQUA, Wis. - Howard Otto Anderson, age 77, of Sparta, formerly of Viroqua, died Saturday, January 10, 1998 at the Vernon Manor in Viroqua, where he had been a resident for about one week.
Howard was born in Vernon County on November 4, 1920 to Gehardt and Jenny Lynn (Phillips) Anderson. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith in Janesville. He was united in marriage to Bernice Olson on October 11, 1941. They farmed in the Viroqua area until 1975 when they moved to Sparta. Howard worked for Universal Forest Products in Warrens for 10 years. While living in the Viroqua area he served on the Liberty Township Board. Howard was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Sparta; one daughter, Sherry (Dick) Ames of Norwalk; two sons, Richard (Vicki) Anderson of Viroqua, and Larry Anderson of Janesville; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Buela Dahlberg of Kenosha, Dorothy Zitzner of De Soto, Mary Torgerson of De Soto, and Ruth Krogan of Soldiers Grove.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sharilyn Anderson; three brothers, Harold, Gerald, and Fredrick Anderson; and two sisters, Emma Meyer and Wilma Schumacher.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 1998 at 11 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua. The Rev. Dr. Steven Fossum will officiate with burial in the East Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation also at the church on Tuesday after 10 a.m.
Jennifer A. Cleveland
Jennifer A. Cleveland, 26, died Thursday, January 8, 1998, at her home, after a long struggle with kidney disease.
She was born July 12, 1971 in Green Bay, Wisconsin and adopted as an infant to Ardus (Tepfer) and John Cleveland. She attended La Crosse Public Schools, graduating from Logan Senior High School in 1989. She also attended Western Wisconsin Technical College.
She is survived by her parents of La Crosse; one sister, Kristin Cleveland, brother-in-law, Erik Nycklemoe and niece Siri Nycklemoe of Flagstaff, Arizona; two brothers, Gregory Cleveland of Rossmoor, California, and Jason Cleveland of Ventura, California; godparents, Dennis and Karen Cleveland of Winona, Minnesota, and Lee and Adele Benson of Clintonville, Wisconsin; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; special friends and special caregivers.
A memorial service will be conducted on Monday, January 12, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 420 West Avenue South. The Reverend Duane Kamroth will officiate. Friends may call at the Sletten-McKee-Hanson Funeral Home, 605 West Avenue South, on Sunday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and at the church on Monday frm 10 a.m. until the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Pauls Lutheran Church or Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation.
Beatrice Marie Graf
Beatrice Marie Graf, 87, formerly 1218 S. 16th Street, died on Thursday, January 8, 1998 at the Franciscan Skemp Nursing Home in La Crosse.
She was born in Caledonia, Minn. on October 22, 1910 to John and Mary ``Molly'' (Scanlan) Bissen. Beatrice married Raymond O. Graf on June 18, 1935 in St. Peter's Catholic Church, Hokah, Minn. Beatrice was a graduate of St. Peter's Catholic High School in Hokah and received her teaching degree from Winona Normal School. She taught at German Ridge Schools in rural Hokah and Brownsville, Minn. After her children were grown she taught at Holy Trinity Catholic Grade School for many years. Beatrice was a member of St. Anne's Altar and Rosary Society at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
She is survived by two sons, Reginald (Barbara) Graf of Lombard, Ill., and Robert (Priscilla) Graf of La Crosse; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mildred Lonkoski of La Crosse, Doris Eckert of Anaheim, Calif., and Therese (Imre) Bard of Honolulu, Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond on May 24, 1989, a daughter, Lois Colbert on April 17, 1995; a grandson, Patrick Colbert; a great-grandson, Nicholas Colbert; three brothers, George, Arnold, and Gordon Bissen; and a siter, Blanche Gallagher.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Entombment will be in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., and again at the funeral home Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

WYEVILLE, Wis. - Mabel E. Brown, age 85, of rural Wyeville, Wis., died Friday, January 9, 1998 at the Tomah Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the Ninneman-Steele Funeral Home in Tomah. Burial will follow in the Wood Cemetery near Wyeville. INDEPENDENCE, Wis. - Ruth Marsolek, 62, of rural Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998 at Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence. Monday evening there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Carl E. Schliebe
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Carl E. Schliebe, 84, of West Salem, died Saturday, January 10, 1998 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born May 5, 1913 in Vesper, Wis., to Pastor Max and Frieda (Zilisch) Schliebe. On December 12, 1947, he married Gladys Schneider at Christ Lutheran Church Parsonage in West Salem. Carl and Glady celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 13, 1997. He was a graduate of Marquette University. Carl was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. He was Deputy Register of Deeds for La Crosse County until his retirement in 1978. Carl was past commander of Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51, West Salem, and was also West Salem's veteran service officer for 44 years. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, West Salem, serving the church in various capacities, including church council, treasurer and WELS representative.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys; two sons, Kent Schliebe of La Crosse and David Schliebe (Kris Kinder) of West Salem; two daughters, Linda (Sheldon) Wood of Lenexa, Kansas, and Jeanne Schliebe of Schaumburg, Ill.; one grandson, Bradley Mauderer of Lenexa, Kansas; two step-granddaughters, Sandra and Pamela Wood, both of Tinley Park, Ill.; one sister, Claudia Slagel of Baton Rouge, La.; one brother-in-law, Ray (Elvera) Schneider of West Salem; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judith Schliebe; and a sister, Charlotte Andree.
A memorial service will be Wednesday, January 14, 1998 at 1 p.m. from Christ Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Rev. Paul R. Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with military rites by the West Salem American Legion Post 51. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Christ Lutheran Church. The Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.
