INDEPENDENCE, Wis. - James J. Smieja, 61, of Independence, died Saturday, January 3, 1998, in his home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 1998, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Edmund Klimek officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence. Tuesday evening there will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Casket bearers will be Broney Matchey, Randy Symicek, Wayne Boland, Anne Truog, Dan Truog and Tom Flaherty.
Edith Harris
TREMPEALEAU, Wis. - Edith Harris, 91, of Trempealeau, died Sunday, January 4, 1998, in Marinuka Manor Nursing Home, Galesville, Wis.
She was born August 26, 1906, in Trempealeau to Robert and Winifred (Gibbs) Trowbridge. On Sept. 9, 1924, she married Theodore ``Ted'' Harris in Minneapolis, Minn. He died in 1989.
Edith was a member of the Trempealeau United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, West Prairie Homemakers, and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors are six daughters, Winifred (Les) Grover, Betty (Arild) Engelien, Peggy (Wendell) Hilton, Norma Jean (Irvin) Wagner, all of Trempealeau, Wanda (Carroll) Sacia of Galesville, Lois (Cletus) Casey of Ettrick, Wis.; 21 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert Trowbridge of Trempealeau and Harry (Delores) Trowbridge of Arcadia, Wis.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandchild; six great-grandchildren; two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in Trempealeau United Methodist Church with Rev. Betsy Miller-Ruben officiating. Burial will follow in Trempealeau Public Cemetery.
Friends may call at Smith Mortuary, Galesville, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday at the church from 1 p.m. until services.
Ralph E. Schulze
CALEDONIA, Minn. - Ralph E. Schulze, age 73, of Caledonia, died Saturday, January 3, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis..
He was born October 12, 1924, in Wilmington Township, to Herman and Wilhelmina (Kohlmeyer) Schulze. He attended country school in Wilmington Township. On June 1, 1968, he married Lois Marin Welper in St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Eitzen, Minn. She preceded him in death August 14, 1970.
Ralph was an active farmer in Wilmington Township all his life. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ and the Eitzen's Lions Club.
He is survived by a sister, Elsie Salverson of Milwaukee; three stepchildren, Daniel Welper, Pam Olmsted and Wade Welper; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Wanda; two sisters, Ora and Ruth; and two brothers, Ormond and William.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Eitzen. The Rev. Tom Laufer will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.
Edwin R. Braathen
HOUSTON, Minn. - Edwin R. Braathen, 85, of Houston, Minn., died Saturday, January 3, 1998, at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston, Minn.
Edwin was born July 21, 1912, in Houston County to Truls and Nettie (Nelson) Braathen. In 1936, Edwin married Alice Vix in Decorah, Iowa. She later died on February 17, 1996. Edwin was a carpenter for over 50 years with Iverson Lumber Yard in Houston. He was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston and served on the Houston City Council. Edwin had been at Valley View Nursing Home for the past three weeks.
Edwin is survived by a daughter, Edith (Paul) Beckman of Houston; a stepson, Irvin (Diana) Smith of Clarksville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; a brother, Paul Braathen of Houston; and a cousin, Erna Larson of Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, one sister and a step-grandson.
Funeral services are planned for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 1998, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church with the Reverend Lane Zaffke officiating.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery in Houston.
The family suggests that memorials be given to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church or Valley View Nursing Home.
Ines Boebel
BOSCOBEL, Wis. - Ines Boebel, 80, of Boscobel, Wis., died on Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Boscobel. Burial will be in the Boscobel Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Beeman-Patchak Funeral Home, Boscobel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Willard V. Parker
PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Willard V. Parker, 80, of Pine Bluff, Ark., died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, in the Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, Wis.
Local survivors include his mother, Milly E. Dittinger Parker Ashdown of Augusta, Wis., and a sister, Phyllis Woodward of Augusta, Wis.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Ralph, Robinson & Son Funeral Home, Pine Bluff, Ark. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Austin Michael Loveless
Austin Michael Loveless, infant son of Kurt and Amie Loveless of La Crosse, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1998, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services were held in Chicago.
Stanley Jarvis Olson
LAKELAND, Fla. - Stanley Jarvis Olson, 80, of Lakeland, Florida, passed away December 19, 1997, in the Lakeland Regional Hospital. He was born to Oscar and Ella (Ottum) Olson March 31, 1917, in Westby, Wisconsin. Stanley was a home builder for most of his life. He also designed and built a mobile home park near Holmen, Wisconsin, which he later sold. He and Elverda moved permanently to Lakeland, Florida in 1992 after spending many winters there. He was a member of St. Paul's Church in La Crosse since 1957. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elverda (Oiurn) Olson; and a son, Dr. Dennis (Jeanette) of Saint Paul, Minn.; two grandchildren, Susan (Kevin) Cole and Craig, all of Turlock, California; one brother, Orbin (Beverly) of Westby; two sisters, Muriel Skrede of Cashton and Elaine Bjerkos of Westby, Wisconsin. Also many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be remembered as a trusted husband, grandfather, brother, advisor, father and my best friend. Memorial services will be held January 10th at 1 p.m. at Sletten McKee Hanson Funeral Home, 605 West Ave. South, La Crosse. Burial of cremated remains will be held at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park at a later date.
Norman A. Champlin
FERRYVILLE, Wis. - Norman A. Champlin, 83, Route #1, Ferryville, died suddenly in his home in the town of Freeman (Crawford County) of an apparent heart attack. He was born at Lyndon Station on November 25, 1914 to Harry and Ruth (Schroeder) Champlin. He graduated from Portage High School in 1933. On July 8, 1942, he married Florence Voigt at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mauston. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Following his discharge they moved to Milwaukee where he worked for A.O. Smith until 1975 when he retired. They moved to rural Ferryville and built a home across from their son's farm. He was a member of the English Ev. Lutheran Church in Viroqua, Smith Steel Workers No. 19806 AFL-CIO, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5970 of Lyndon Station.
He is survived by his wife, Florence, one son, Roger (Sheila) Champlin, of rural Ferryville, two daughters, Sharon (Murphy) White, of Okeechobee Fla., Linda Clemmons, of Charleston, S.C., eight grandchildren, Ryan and Kimberly Champlin, Ted Peterson, Kris Rucks, Steven White, Jamie, Bryan, and Christopher Clemmons, and two great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Garrett Rucks. He is also survived by one brother, Roland Champlin, of Omaha, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Harland, Gordon, and Russell Champlin, and four sisters, Eleanor Bulgrin, Dorothy Podrasky, Helen Hawes, and Margie Geisser.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 8th at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mauston with Pastor Dennis Kempf officiating. Burial will be in the Lyndon Cemetery at Lyndon Station with military rites by VFW Post No. 5970 of Lyndon Station. Friends may call at the church from noon until time of service on Thursday. The Thorson Funeral Home of Viroqua (1-800-657-6741) is serving the family.
Mary A. Buch
Mary A. Buch, 82, of Lake Villa, Ill., and formerly of La Crosse, died on Sunday, January 4, 1998 at the home of her daughter in Lake Villa. She was born on March 24, 1915 in East Troy, Wis., to John and Mary (Sheedy) Crowley. She was orphaned in infancy and adopted by Joseph and Florence Toohey of Tomah, Wis. She married Stephen J. Buch on February 14, 1942 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tomah. He died on May 26, 1981. Mary was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman, where she served as secretary and treasurer of the Catholic Women's League, and also as a Eucharistic Minister.
Mary is survived by three daughters, Mary Jo (William) Schriver of Belvidere, Ill., Terri Buch of Gurnee, Ill., and Margaret (Greg) Linder of Lake Villa, Ill.; a son, Peter (Karen) Buch of Rockford, Ill.; six grandchildren, Kristin Schriver of Minneapolis, Minn., Marnie Schriver of Island Lake, Ill., Stephanie (Brian) Gauerke of Rockford, Ill., and Sarah, Stephen and Mason Linder, all of Lake Villa, Ill.; and a great-granddaughter, Natalie Randall of Rockford, Ill. In addition to her husband, Steve, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Daniel Crowley. During the last weeks of her life, Mary was attended by Tricia Garcia of Skokie, Ill.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 1998 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman. The Rev. Anthony J. Wolf will officiate. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery of La Crosse. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. There will be a wake service at the funeral home on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Alan F. Jones Sr.
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Alan F. Jones Sr., 76, a resident of the Lakeview Health Care Center, West Salem, Wis., died on Monday, January 5, 1998 at the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center. He was born on February 5, 1921 in Bangor, Wis., to Jesse and Minnie (Capper) Jones.
Alan is survived by three children, Alan E. Jones of Kenosha, Wis., Larry A. Jones of La Crosse and Judy Baralani of Genoa, Wis.; three sisters, Gladys Schilling and Virginia Miller, both of West Salem, and Luella Harr of Sparta, Wis.; and one brother, Marvin D. Jones of Cashton, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife Janet (Morgan) Jones.
There will be no funeral services. He will be cremated and his cremains will be buried in the Burns Cemetery, Bangor, Wis., at a later date. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
