Homer W. Anderson
ETTRICK, Wis. - Homer W. Anderson, age 82, of rural Ettrick, Wis., died on Tuesday, January 6, 1998, at his home.
Homer was born on April 15, 1915, in rural Ettrick, Wis., to Claus and Mina (Olson) Anderson. He was a life-long area resident who farmed and also did carpentry and mechanical work prior to his retirement in 1989.
Mr. Anderson is survived by a brother, Irvin (Evelyn) Anderson of Lebanon, Tenn.; two sisters, Alice Swenson and Celia Olson, both of Ettrick, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Homer was preceded in death by five brothers, Lester, Albert, Norman, Melvin and Vernal.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 10, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. in the North Beaver Creek Parish Faith Lutheran Church with burial in the church Cemetery, both in rural Ettrick, Wis. Rev. Tim Ehling will officiate.
Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Blair, Wis., and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
Ethel M. Wiley
BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Ethel M. Wiley, 99, of the Shamrock area of Jackson County, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in Pine View Nursing Home, Black River Falls.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Shamrock Union Church and burial will be in the Shamrock Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until services.
Merlin "Mike" Meinking
SPARTA, Wis. - Merlin "Mike" Meinking, 68, of Sparta, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Tomah.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sparta. Burial, with full military honors, will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
Friends may call at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta, on Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
Eunice M. Burkhalter
Eunice M. Burkhalter, 83, of rural Winona County, Minn., died on Tuesday, January 6th, 1998, at her home.
She was born on a farm in the town of Burns, rural Bangor, Wis., to Engbert and Annie Johnson. She married Fred Burkhalter on June 26, 1954, at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Winona. They spent their lives working on their farm until Fred retired. He then preceded her in death on July 19, 1982. Eunice had a heart of gold and loved helping the elderly and handicapped.
She is survived by two stepsons, Ed (Lucille) Burkhalter of Winona and Everett (Jeanette) Burkhalter of Arizona; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Serena ``Toots'' Vian of Sparta; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Johnson also of Sparta; many nieces and nephews; many special friends and supportive neighbors.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 10th, at 11 a.m. from the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent. The Rev. Duane Baardseth will officiate. Burial will be in the Dakota Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be given to the American Lung Association.
Malinda C. Reinhard
Malinda C. Reinhard, 87, a resident of the Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse, died on Monday, January 5, 1998, at the Care Center.
She was born on June 15, 1910, in the Town of Shelby, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, to Andrew and Mattie (Simonson) Nelson. She married Peter P. Reinhard. He preceded her in death. Malinda had been a registered nurse at Grandview Hospital in La Crosse for many years. She was a member of English Lutheran Church.
She is survived by one son, Peter M. Reinhard of Howell, Michigan; one niece, Marilyn (Darwin) Ward of La Crosse; and one nephew, Milton (Irene) Hanson of La Crosse. In addition to her husband, Peter, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
There will be no services. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
Adah L. Schaller
BELLS COULEE, Wis. - Adah L. Schaller, 77, of Taylor, Wis., formerly of Bells Coulee, died Tuesday, January 6, 1998, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born November 24, 1920, in the Town of Burns to Carlton and Olga (Dahl) Freng. On February 22, 1943, she married Leo F. Schaller, Sr., in Florida and he preceded her in death on September 14, 1979. Adah was a member of Bells Coulee Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday School Superintendent for many years. She was also an honorary member of the Gunderson-Gilbertson American Legion Post 507 Auxiliary, Mindoro.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Dan) Rhyme of Mindoro and Joann Schaller of Taylor; six sons, Leo Jr. (Gena) of Bangor, Ronald (Barbara) of Lakeside, Ariz., Alan (Jodi) of Muscoda, Wis., Dennis (Virginia) of Sparta, Duane (Dawn) of Taylor and Forrest of Black River Falls; 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Duaine (Mildred) Freng of La Crosse. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, Donald and Donovan; and two brothers.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 10, at 11 a.m. from Bells Coulee Lutheran Church. Rev. Ron Nowland will officiate. Burial will be in Burns Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Friday from 7 until 9 p.m.; and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Henry Vatland
Henry Vatland, 91, a resident of the Hillview Health Care Center, died on Thursday, January 1, 1998, at the care center. He was born in Mabel, Minn. on September 8, 1906, to Hans and Bertha (Garness) Vatland. He married Myrtle Bjergum on October 22, 1931, in Spring Grove, Minn. She preceded him in death on September 26, 1996. Henry and his wife had farmed in rural Minnesota for many years until moving to La Crosse in 1955. He then worked for Taushe Hardware until his retirement in 1967. Henry was an avid sports fan and baseball fan.
Henry is survived by six children, Betty Jane (Leonard) Ambrose of La Crosse, Kloy ``Kay'' (Rudolph) Arlt Jr. of Onalaska, Lynden (Rose) Vatland of La Crosse, Howard (Shirley) Vatland of La Crosse, Marlene (Charles) Sargent of Rochester, Minn. and Gerald (Astor) Vatland of Sheboygan, Wis.; fourteen grandchildren, David Ambrose, Steven (Barbara) Ambrose, Paul (Leslie) Ambrose, Rudolph (Wendi) Arlt III, Kevin (Carol) Arlt, Robert Arlt, Donavon Vatland, Scott (Lisa) Vatland, Heather Vatland, Wayne Vatland, Michael Sargent, Matthew Sargent, Janice Vatland and Kerrie Vatland; five great-grandchildren, Leah, Jacob, Joseph and Michael Ambrose and R.J. Arlt; one brother-in-law, Harold Benson of Mabel, Minn.; and two sisters-in-law, Bernice Bjergum of Spring Grove, Minn. and Lorraine Harkness of Mabel, Minn. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Julius, Alvin, Oscar, Carl and Bennet; one sister, Gladys; and two grandchildren, Lynda Rose Vatland and Kenneth Matthew Arlt.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 1998, at 11:30 a.m. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. The Rev. Luther Borgen will officiate. Burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be given to the Garnes Trinity Lutheran Church in Mabel, Minn.
Bernice Ann Radell
SUN CITY, Arizona - Bernice Ann Radell, 83, a resident of Sun City, Ariz. for the past 20 years died Monday, December 29, 1997. She was a Home Maker and belonged to the B.P.O.E.
Survivors include two sons, Jack Radell of Peoria, Ariz. and Mike Radell of Henderson, Nev.; two daughters, Karen Stylen and Barb Dauphin, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held December 31, 1997, in Sun City, Arizona. Memorials to Alert Adult Care Home, 7003 W. Columbine Dr. Peoria, Arizona, 85381. Sunland Mortuary of Sun City, Arizona assisted the family with arrangements.
Ruby M. Haywood
MCGREGOR, Iowa - Ruby M. Haywood, 88, of McGregor, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 31, 1997, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wis. after a long illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 1998, at First Lutheran Church, rural McGregor, Iowa. Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor and one hour prior to services at the church.
Raymond A. Nelson
Raymond A. Nelson, 83, of La Crosse died Thursday, January 1, 1998, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center. He was born in Stanley, North Dakota on August 29, 1914, to Peder and Anna (Haugland) Nelson. He worked at the Trailer Company and the YMCA before his retirement in 1977.
He is survived by his wife, Jennie (Gilbertson) of La Crosse; three sons, Richard, Steven, Roger (Tina); and one daughter, Joan Nimmo, all of La Crosse; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one nephew; and two nieces. He is preceded in death by one son, Darvin; grandson, Forrest Nimmo; three sisters, Alma, Anna and Sophie; and one brother, Palmer.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mike Mandsager will officiate and burial will be at North Branch Cemetery at Osseo, Wis. Family and friends may call at the Nelson-Woodruff-Blaschke Funeral Home, 1007 Caledonia Street on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service.
