Vey West
Vey Wesley West, 91, of Rice Lake died March 24 at the Rice Lake Convalescent Center.
Mr. West was born April 16, 1906 at Monroe to Dennis and Sara West. At the age of 2, he moved with his parents to the Haugen-Sarona area, where he grew up and received his elementary education. After graduating from Durand High School in 1924, he worked for the Davey Tree Co. in Kent, Ohio, and later for the Department of Natural Resources in Barronett.
On Feb. 15, 1939, he married Violet Crotteau in Minneapolis, Minn. He worked for the Department of Natural Resources until the outbreak of WW II, when he went to work for Badger Ordnance at Baraboo. After the war, he returned to Sarona and started a potato business, which he operated until selling it in 1970. He then worked for the Ag Stabilization and Conservation Service as a district director for a 15-county area until retiring in 1981, when he and his wife moved to Rice Lake. He had been president of the Village of Haugen, was active in the Republican Party, and had served on the Rice Lake hospital board, WITC vocational school board, and the County Board. He had been a member of the Shell Lake and Rice Lake Masonic lodges. Mr. West enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Violet; five daughters, Teryl Schneider of Minnesota, Judy Danna of Florida, and Karen Slagstad of Haugen; Sari West of Rice Lake; and Michelle "Mickee" Cerase of Maryland.; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three foster children, Barbara Frost of Washington, Bob Mosansky of Montana, and John Mosansky of Rice Lake.
William Amundson
William Amundson, 88, of Dallas died Feb. 6 at the home of his daughter, Wanda, in Chippewa Falls.
Mr. Amundson was born Sept. 7, 1909 in the Town of Dallas to Andrew and Inger (Nelson) Amundson. He married Laura Larson on Oct. 13, 1936. They lived most of their married life on a small farm in rural Dallas, where Mr. Amundson farmed and worked at sawmills, the Dallas Ford garage, WPA, the Dallas Creamery, and for over 20 years for the Town of Dallas.
Mr. Amundson is survived by a daughter, Wanda Kohls of Chippewa Falls; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura, on Dec. 16, 1991; and a son, Robert.
John Avery
John William Avery, 75, of Cumberland died Feb. 3 at the Cumberland Extended Care Unit.
Mr. Avery was born on March 11, 1922 in Cumberland to Stace and Eliza Jane (Pinkham) Avery. He served in the Army during WWII, had been self-employed as a mechanic and had also worked as a mechanic at various implement and automobile dealerships. Mr. Avery had also hauled milk for Stella Cheese Co. in the Shell Lake area for over 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; three sons, Carl of Wisconsin Dells, Burt of Comstock, and Jim of Cumberland; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild, two brothers, Charles of Tacoma, Wash., and Robert of Cumberland; and two sisters, Eileen Kopischke of Milwaukee, and Blanche Avery of St. Paul, Minn.
Orpha Bailkey
Orpha E. Bailkey, 76, of Chetek died Feb. 1 at Land O'Lakes, Fla., where she spent her winters.
Mrs. Bailkey was born on May 17, 1921 in Eau Claire to John and Anna (Loberg) Jorgenson. She married Chester Bailkey on July 30, 1942 in Chetek. Mrs. Bailkey was a homemaker and had owned an upholstery business in Chetek for many years. She loved doing crafts and had been a member of the Sons of Norway and the Chetek American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by three brothers, Jerome of Trego, Alvin of Zephyr Hills, Fla., and Lloyd of Land O'Lakes.
Mrs. Bailkey was preceded in death by her husband, Chester, on Oct. 7, 1989.
Jane Berenger
Jane M. Berenger, 81, of Rice Lake and formerly of Chetek, died Jan. 24 at her home.
Mrs. Berenger was born June 5, 1916 to Egan and Elsa (Winstedt) Strandel in Chicago, Ill. She married Robert Lee Berenger there, moved to Chetek in 1976 and later to Rice Lake.
She is survived by a daughter, Pamela Johnson of Streamwood, Ill.; two sons, Gary of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Robert Jr. of Plymouth; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Mrs. Berenger was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1985, and a son, Earl, in 1991.
Barbara Boortz
Barbara Jean Boortz, 58, of Superior died Jan. 9 at her home.
Mrs. Boortz was born on July 13, 1939 in Superior to Raymond and Jean Rink. She graduated from Central High School in Superior, was a cook at the Androy Hotel, and had been a member of the cribbage league in Duluth. Mrs. Boortz, an avid Packer fan, had been a lifelong resident of Superior
She is survived by her husband, Dennis; a son, Darren, and two daughters, Denise and Dianna, all of Superior; two granddaughters; three brothers, Donald Ludington of Orville, Calif. and Jim and Robert Rink, both of Superior; and two sisters, Donna Collins of Chaplin, Minn. and Carol Shanks of Superior.
Ronald Chartier
Ronald "Shark" Chartier, 59, of Winona, Minn., and formerly of Rice Lake, died Jan. 28 at his home.
Mr. Chartier was born on June 13, 1938 in Los Angeles, Calif., to Roger and Florence Chartier. His family lived in Rice Lake and operated the Northern Cafe. Mr. Chartier graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1956, where he'd played football and was an avid Packers fan. He married Karen DeRousseau in 1957 and the couple had three children. He later moved to Winona, married Donna Dorn in 1970 and had two children.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; three sons, Roger of Laughton, Okla., Kevin of Eau Claire,Chad at home; two daughters, Diane of Wausau and Shelly of Winona, Minn.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother, Florence, of Winona; two sisters, Marcia and Karen, both of Winona; and a brother, Terry Sand of Glenwood City.
Galen Clark
Galen Willis Clark, 76, of Cameron died Jan. 31 at the Lakeview Medical Center here.
Mr. Clark was born on June 30, 1921 in Hawkins to Willis and Elsie Clark. He lived in Bainville, Mont. until the age of 16, joined the Marines in 1942 and served in the Army during WWII until 1945. He married Marceile Miller on July 31, 1947 in Racine. Mr. Clark was a musician and worked as a prison guard in Waupun. He retired to northern Wisconsin and had enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Marceile; five sons, Gary of Kennewick, Wash., Kenneth of Yelm, Wash., Brian of Eugene, Ore., Richard of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Jeffery of Graham, Wash.; a daughter, Lisa of Cumberland, five grandchildren; and a brother, Norman of Waupun.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis, in 1975.
