James `Jim' L. Olson
ELROY, Wis. - Jim Olson, age 46 years, died peacefully at his residence on Thursday, January 1, 1998. He was born on January 23, 1951, in Mauston to Norris and Elizabeth (Grandeau) Olson. On April 22, 1972, he was united in marriage to Ruth Holloway in the Fountain Lutheran Church. He lived in Elroy all his life, where he loved his farm and animals. He was a member of the Fountain Lutheran Church and was a plant supervisor for the Land O' Lakes in Mauston.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Elroy; two sons, Keith of Green Bay and Tim of La Crosse; father, Norris of Elroy; three sisters, Barb Olson of New Lisbon, Evonne Olson of Wonewoc and Darlene Richards of Crystal Lake, Ill. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. at the Fountain Lutheran Church, rural Elroy with Rev. Soren Flessen officiating. Burial will follow in the Fountain Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home, Elroy on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from noon until 1:30 p.m.

Clara C. Fennigkoh
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Clara C. Fennigkoh, 81, of West Salem, died Friday, January 2, 1998, at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem.
She was born on July 21, 1916, in Hamburg Township to Fred and Tilla (Sorbergshagen) Carson. On March 12, 1941, she married Fred H. Fennigkoh in Chaseburg and he preceded her in death on June 15, 1995. Clara farmed with her husband on the family farm in rural West Salem for many years.
Survivors include a son, Byron (Gloria) of West Salem; three grandsons, David (Teresa), Karl and Paul, all of West Salem; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Amber, both of West Salem; a sister-in-law, Hilda Carson of Stoddard; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and Reuben.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 7, at 11 a.m. from Christ Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Rev. Paul R. Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, on Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Van Vey Zweifel
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Van Vey Zweifel, 92, a resident of Lakeview Health Center in West Salem, died at the center on Thursday, January 1, 1998.
She was born in Mukwonago, Wisconsin on October 10, 1905, to Albert and Mary (Van Buren) Grutzmacher. She married Henry Zweifel on December 23, 1937, in Stoughton, Wis. He preceded her in death on February 3, 1965.
She was a long time member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
She is survived by one son, Dennis (Virginia) Zweifel of La Crosse; two grandchildren, Jay Zweifel and Andrea (Zweifel) Graves; and one great-grandson, Chase Zweifel, all of St. Paul, Minn.; and one sister, Janice Erichsen of Dunwood, Ga. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jay, who died in the sinking of the U.S.S. Thresher submarine in 1963; and one brother, John Grutzmacher.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 1998, at 1 p.m. from the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. Rev. Michael Frandsen will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from noon until the time of services.
Emma Kreis
ONALASKA, Wis. - Emma Kreis, 93, of Onalaska, died at the Franciscan Health Care Center on Friday, January 2, 1998. She was born on August 12, 1904, at Trienz, Germany.
She is survived by a daughter, Doris Hammes, of Onalaska; a granddaughter, Rose Hammes of Onalaska; and a sister, Rosa Riedinger of Dossenheim, Germany. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, William Hammes and several brothers and sisters.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Reverend William Matzek will officiate. Entombment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum at the Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the service.

John Englerth
STODDARD, Wis. - John Englerth, 59, of Stoddard, passed away suddenly at home of cardiac arrest on Friday, January 2, 1998.
He was born in Winona, Minnesota on May 2, 1938 to Grover and Laura (Guenther) Englerth. He received both his Bachelors degree in Mathematics and his Masters degree in Education Administration from Winona State University.
John taught math for a short time in Port Huron, Mich. He then served as a math teacher and Assistant Principal at West Salem High School for several years, and later served as Principal at Cassville High School for several years. For the following 22 years, John served both as Principal and as a math teacher at DeSoto High School from 1975 until his retirement in 1997.
He was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard for many years and was also a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in La Crosse.
John is survived by his wife, Phyllis; one daughter, Kristine Englerth of Fresno, Calif.; three sons, Michael (Linda) Englerth of Eden Prairie, Minn., Mark (Karlene) Englerth of West Salem, and Matthew (Jody) Englerth of Gilbert, Ariz.; two step-sons, Kevin Kelling of Big Rapids, Mich., and Timothy Kelling of Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren, Jenna, Jordon, and Troy Englerth; two sisters, Gwen Sabolyk of Terrytown, La., and Ione Morissette of St. Scolastique, Quebec, Canada; one brother, James (Helen) Englerth of Winona, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Ed Ambrosen of Winona; and one sister-in-law, Betty Englerth of Winona. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Bette Ambrosen; and one brother, Thomas Englerth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 1998 at 11 a.m. from St. Pius X Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph J. Rafacz will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m., where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m., and again on Wednesday from 10 until 10:30 a.m.
Glen D. Hansman
TOMAH, Wis. - Glen D. Hansman, 81, of Tomah, died Saturday, January 3, 1998 at his home in Tomah. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Tomah. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Memorial Garden. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the White Funeral Home, Tomah; and 12:30 p.m. until services Tuesday at the church.
James J. Smieja
INDEPENDENCE, Wis. - James J. Smieja, 61, of Independence, died Saturday, January 3, 1998 in his home after a 15 month courageous battle with cancer.
He was born March 7, 1936 to George and Clara (Sobota) Smieja. He married Josephine (Jo) Skroch, daughter of Dr. Joseph and Mabel Skroch (both deceased) in Arcadia on Jan. 13, 1968. Jo is the Assistant Administrator of the Trempealeau County Health Care Center. Jim and Jo have one son, Joseph who currently helps manage their mink ranch. To his son he was a hero, always there, always caring. He provided a stable home and an atmosphere of love. To his wife he was a soul mate, a love at first sight and a companion for life.
Jim was a graduate of the Independence High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960 and in the Army Reserve from 1960-64. After serving his country he returned home and became involved in mink ranching with his father and eventually established his own mink ranch. Jim enjoyed working outside and took pride in his work and accomplishments. He was an active member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and had a deep and strong faith. He was a man who knelt by his bed each night to pray.
Jim was an avid snowmobiler, belonged to the local club and helped mark and prepare trails. His snowmobiler friends will remember ``Jim's Bridge'' over the river. Other active interests included hunting, fishing the Mississippi and the Great Lakes, the Packers and his home. His greatest accomplishments were as a husband and father and he excelled at both. He was a big, quiet, strong, loving, sensitive, and compassionate man.
Through the years Jim employed many men and boys to work on his mink ranch, including his son and nephew Wayne. For many it was their first job and a place where they learned work habits and ethics. Jim enjoyed working and teaching all and often spoke of the good and at times humorous experiences.
He is survived by his wife, Jo; son, Joseph; brother, Ed (Mary) Smieja and their daughter Susie and friend Tim; brother, Ray (Delores) Smieja and their children, Tom and Jan (Tom) Olson, and their children Aaron and Jamie Ray; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Tom and Mary (Skroch) Flaherty and their daughter, Jenny (Kirk) DeCarlo and their triplets, Amanda, Luke, and Jacob; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan and Jane (Skroch-Boland) Truog and their children, Wayne Boland and Anne; niece, Margaret Runkel (Ken) Suchla and their children, Jennifer and Emily; nephew, Gene (Patty) Runkel; and many other relatives, friends, current and former employees.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruth (Smieja) Runkel.
Services will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 1998 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Edmund Klimek officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence. Tuesday evening there will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Jean M. Ziebell
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Jean M. Ziebell, 74, of West Salem, formerly of La Crosse, died Friday, January 2, 1998 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born May 24, 1923, in Pipestone, Minn. to Earl and Helen (Peterson) Wakefield. On September 26, 1943, she married Everett W. Ziebell in Seattle, Wash. Jean and Everett formerly owned IGA stores in La Crosse and Winona for many years. She enjoyed boating, spending time on the river, watching birds and doing crossword puzzles. Jean liked to travel and was also an avid Green Bay Packer fan.
Survivors include her husband, Everett; four children, Tim (Jennifer) of Zumbrota, Minn., David (Kathryn) of Humble, Texas, Randy and Debra, both of West Salem; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Alice Theis of Winona, Minn.; one brother, Kenneth (Roberta) Wakefield of South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 8, at 10 a.m. from the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem. Burdett W. Wakeman, Minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Winona, Minn. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and also on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
Ina L. Evans
SPARTA, Wis. - Ina L. Evans, 93, of Sparta, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998 in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.
Survivors are a sister, Zella McLaughlin of Sheboygan, Wis., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, and five brothers.
Her body will be cremated.
Graveside services will be Saturday, January 17, 1998 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta, at 1 p.m. Smith Mortuary, Melrose, assisted with arrangements.
Merle Koopman
CEDARBURG, Wis. - Merle Koopman, age 84, of Cedarburg, Wis., and formerly of Tomah, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 31, 1997, at his home in Cedarburg. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Ninneman-Steele Funeral Home in Tomah. Private burial services will be held Thursday at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Tomah. Ruth K. Rice
SPARTA, Wis. - Ruth K. Rice, 91, of Hudson, Ohio and formerly of Sparta, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1997 in Hudson.
She was born on August 6, 1906 in Merrill, Wis. to Samuel and Victoria (Mlynek) Klick. She grew up in the Whitehall-Independence area and graduated from Independence High School in 1927. She attended Beauty School in Milwaukee. She worked in Eau Claire and Thorp and then moved to Sparta in August of 1932. She owned and operated the Carol Beauty Shop in Sparta. She married Mathias H. Rice on May 29, 1936 in Wausau. They resided in Sparta. Ruth retired in 1972 and moved to Hudson, Ohio to live with her son in 1994.
She is survived by her son, M. David (Joy Diane) Rice of Hudson, Ohio; five grandchildren, Scott Rice, Kathy Rice, Kristin Rice, Jennifer Easton and Marc Easton; three great-grandchildren, Lauren Rice, Adam Rice, Emily Rice; a sister, Dolores (Roy) Melvin of Glenbuelah, Wis.; a brother, Ralph Klick of La Crosse.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mathias on December 30, 1985; a brother, Raymond; and two sisters, Blanche and Eunice.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 7, 1998 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Sparta, with Father Mark Walljasper officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sparta.
