John S. Peterson
SPARTA, Wis. - John S. Peterson, 20, of Sparta, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 30, 1997 at home in Sparta. He was born in Brookfield, Wis., on April 2, 1977. He graduated from the Pine Ridge Baptist Academy in Forest Hill, Ark., in 1994. He was united in marriage to Heather Taylor on Oct. 4, 1996 in Sparta. He has been sick with a brain tumor since Aug. 9, 1996. He was a member of the Ambassador Baptist Church, Sparta, and was a loving husband and father.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Harland Peterson and his maternal great-grandfather, Leo Starks.
He is survived by his wife, Heather; one daughter, Brianna; one son, Jason; his parents, Gary and Donna Peterson of Sparta; one sister, Melissa of Sparta; his birth mother, Salli (Dennis) Bellis of Milwaukee; his birth father, Charles Wendt of Crescent City, Calif.; and numerous other family members.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ambassador Baptist Church, Sparta, with Rev. Clyde Ewers officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Sparta.
Friends may call at the Page-Smith Funeral Home, Sparta, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Mildred Dorothy Houska
Mildred Dorothy Houska, 85, a resident of Bethany Riverside Care Center, died on Wednesday, December 31, 1997 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, after a battle with cancer. She was born in La Crosse on June 16, 1912 to Joseph and Anna (Lapitz) Houska. Mildred had worked for the Girl Scouts of America office in La Crosse for many years until her retirement in 1979. She was an avid reader and sports fan, especially the Brewers and Packers.
Mildred is survived by one niece, one nephew, one great-niece and two great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Viola, Esther, Irene and Marie; and one niece.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 2, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. The Rev. Robert J. Cook will officiate. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
Adolph Fanta
HILLSBORO, Wis. - Adolph Fanta, 87, of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997 in the Vernon Manor, Viroqua. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Fick-Hoof Funeral Home, Hillsboro. Interment will be in the Mount Vernon Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

HUMBIRD, Wis. - Agnes M. Laffe, 58, of Humbird, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton. Burial will be at a later date. Mary Grace Roberge Seybold
HORSESHOE BEND, Ark. - Mary Grace Roberge Seybold, 82, of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, formerly of La Crosse, Wis., died Dec. 30, 1997. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Horseshoe Bend Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers make memorials to Animal Control Center, Horseshoe Bend, Ark.
Thelma J. Mills
VIROQUA, Wis. - Thelma J. Mills, age 78, of R.2, Viroqua, died Wednesday, December 31, 1997 at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. She was born August 16, 1919 in the town of Jefferson, Vernon County, to Oscar and Karen (Thompson) Jacobson. She graduated from Viroqua High School in 1936. She was united in marriage to Scott Mills on February 8, 1941 and they lived on the Mills family farm all their married years.
Thelma worked for Jack & Jill, First National Bank and the Oriole Cafe in Viroqua. She was a member of the Viroqua United Methodist Church; Sarah Circle; Homemakers; and the VFW Auxiliary. She also served as a leader of the Victory Pigeons 4-H Club. Thelma is survived by her husband, Scott of Viroqua; one son, Howard (Nancy) Mills of La Crosse; two grandsons, Scott and Erick Mills, both of La Crosse; one sister, Marcene (Claude) Sebion of Viroqua; one brother-in-law, Blaine Conaway of Viroqua; a special cousin, Mayonne McClurg of Viroqua; nieces; nephews; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by one brother, Howard and his wife Bee Jacobson; and one sister, Mildred Conaway.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 1998 at 11 a.m. in the Viroqua United Methodist Church. The Rev. Frank Thompson will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday after 10 a.m.
Dora F. Grimek
Dora F. Grimek, 91, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997 in Franciscan Care Center, Onalaska. She had resided in Onalaska and had been employed at UW-La Crosse prior to her retirement. Dora had been a kind, caring person and will be remembered well by her children, grandchildren and friends. Private services and visitation for family and friends will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Dickinson Funeral Home in Onalaska, with visitation from noon until services.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Betty L. Fishler, 69, of Prairie du Chien, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997 in Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Garrity Funeral Home, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Harold L. Long
BELLA VISTA, Ark./MADISON, Wis. - Harold L. Long, age 76, a resident of Lake Mills, Wis., and previous resident of Bella Vista, died Sunday, February 9, 1997 in Madison. He was born July 2, 1920 in Token Creek, Wis.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene of Lake Mills; two daughters, Carol Sue (Russell) Peck of Madison and Julia (John) Keller of Lake Mills; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorna (Charles) Scarbarough of Texas; and one brother, Vernon Long of Madison.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 1997 at the Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison. Reverend Mary Pharmer will officiate and military honors will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Bella Vista, Ark., ambulance service or the American Cancer Society.
Edgar J. Rochelt
Edgar J. Rochelt, age 96, of 3140 South 28th Street, died Sunday, February 9, 1997 at Hillview Health Care Center. He was born October 9, 1900 at Coon Valley, Wis., to Alois and Augusta (Schultz) Rochelt. He married Bernetta Skifton at Caledonia, Minn., on October 9, 1929. Edgar farmed near Coon Valley all his life, until retiring. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church. He loved to fish.
In addition to his wife, Bernetta, he is survived by two sons, Laine of Coon Valley and Kenneth of La Crosse; by four grandchildren, Karen Perez, Richard Rochelt, Linda Loeffler and Kristine Rochelt; and by five great-grandchildren, John and Alex Brevik, Nichole and Tanner Rochelt and Shawn Loeffler. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 12 at 11 a.m. at the Sletten McKee Hanson Funeral Home, 605 West Ave. South. The Reverend Roger Sachs will officiate and burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Clarice E. Mossholder
Clarice E. Mossholder died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997 at the Franciscan Nursing Center, Appleton, Wis., where she had been a resident for the past year. She was born Clarice Eleanor Marx on May 8, 1913 in Werner, N.D., to Joseph and Anna Klinko Marx. After graduating from high school, she moved to Appleton, Wis., where on May 15, 1937, she was united in marriage with Marshall W. Mossholder. Together, they farmed and operated a cheese business until his death in August, 1989.
She is survived by two daughters, Deloris (David) Kramer of Le Mars, Iowa, and Nancy (Howard) Mills of La Crosse; two sons, David (Jan) Mossholder of Appleton and Keith Mossholder of White Lake, Wis.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nila Hoffer of Hebron, N.D., and Ellen Kinsella of Port Charlotte, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Allan Marx; and one sister, Lorna Cannon.

BUFFALO CITY, Wis. - Walter W. Mueller, 79, of Buffalo City, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997 in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, Cochrane, Wis. Spring burial will be in Buffalo City Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the J.S. Wozney Funeral Chapel, Cochrane, where there will be an 8:30 p.m. devotional service; and from 10 a.m. until services Thursday at the church.
Anthony C. "Tony" Kirschner
HIXTON, Wis. - Anthony C. "Tony" Kirschner, 77, of Hixton, died on Sunday, February 9, 1997 at his residence. He was born on August 16, 1919 to parents Joseph and Mary (Weber) Kirschner. He married Marian E. Knobloch on August 10, 1943 at Saint Joseph the Workman Cathedral in La Crosse. She preceded him in death on November 13, 1996. They farmed at Saint Joseph's Ridge near La Crosse and in October of 1962, they moved to Hixton where they owned and operated the Club 95 restaurant and Motel 95 until retiring in 1988. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Hixton-Taylor American Legion Post #368, the Alma Center VFW Post #8494 and the Knights of Columbus Council #4697. He loved gardening, and playing cards and cribbage. For many years, Club 95 was the sponsor of a local fast-pitch softball team. The team captured the state title four times, advancing to the national tournament where they once placed fifth.
He is survived by four sons, Carl of De Soto, James (Barbara) of San Diego, Calif., Stephen (Beverly) of Hixton and Donald (Colleen) of Black River Falls; one daughter, Jayne (Larry) Olson of Viroqua; a sister-in-law, Carol (Leo) Bina of Rockland; 11 grandchildren, Doug, Mike, Tony, Kelly, Jamie and Brandon Kirschner, Melissa Kirschner Scarseth, and Eric, Sara, Katrina and Nate Olson; three step-grandchildren, Tony Spadaccini, and Tony and Mark Schaeffer; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Camden, Mitchell and Tanner. Besides his wife, Marian, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Frank and John; and by seven sisters, Mary, Kate, Theresa, Agnes, Rose, Margaret and Frances.
Funeral services for Anthony C. Kirschner will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 1997 at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Saint Joseph's Ridge, rural La Crosse, with Reverend Robert Hunt officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, on Wednesday evening from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4:30 p.m.; and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
Charlene Lachman
Charlene Lachman, 44, of La Crosse, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997 at her home. She was born in Richmond, Indiana, on Oct. 5, 1952.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; one daughter, Maria Shaffer of La Crosse; one son, Brian (Elizabeth) Shaffer of Holmen; one grandson; her father, Jack (Marge) Lineback of Richmond; and six sisters, Jackie (Ken) Fry, Linda (Robert) Freeman, Ellen (Mike) Adams, Cindy (Charles) Miller, Marsha (Charles) Thomas and Marian (Bruce) Sanger.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Nelson-Woodruff-Blaschke Funeral Home. The Rev. William Heisler will officiate and burial will be at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from noon until time of service.
