Bernice F. Swartz
Bernice F. Swartz, 95, of La Crosse, passed away on Monday, December 15, 1997 at the Bethany Riverside Nursing Home. She was born on March 5, 1902 in La Crosse to John and Aldace (Hagenbaugh) Ash. She married Arnold Olin Swartz on April 16, 1919 in the Baptist Church Rectory in La Crosse. Bernice was very active, in the Swartz Office Supply Company, which her husband founded, and as a member of the Chapter BX of the PEO Sisterhood. Her volunteer efforts included the Red Cross Blood Bank; the Lutheran Hospital Gift Shop; and the La Crosse Historical Society. Her happiest days were spent at the family cottage on the Mississippi River near Dresbach, where she instilled in her family a love of nature and an appreciation of American antiques and crafts.
Bernice is survived by her son, Arnold O. (Janet) Swartz Jr. of La Crosse; her daughter, Jean Swartz (Robert) Rennebohm of Madison, Wis.; a brother, Richard C. (Mavis) Ash of La Crosse; two sisters, Gladys Ash Weihaupt of Dresbach, Minn., and Jane Ash Hess of Tomah, Wis.; a son-in-law, Ray A. Sundet of La Crosse; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Swartz Sundet; three brothers, John, Gilbert and Thomas Ash; and three sisters, Imogene Ash Scharpf, Alice Ash Boland and Aldace Ash.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Bethany Riverside Nursing Home for the care and comfort Bernice received while living there, and to suggest that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Bethany Riverside Nursing Home.

Sandra J. Shirven
Sandra J. Shirven, 53, of 1747 Cass Street, died at the Meriter Hospital, Madison, Monday, December 15, 1997. She was born June 8, 1944 in La Crosse to Francis and Adeline (Hellwig) Shirven. She graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1962. She completed training to be a medical technician and had worked in both St. Francis and Lutheran hospitals, and in the Chicago area. She was an active member of English Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school and was a member of ELCAW and mission circle.
In addition to her mother, Adeline, she is survived by a sister, Gail (Richard) Beyer of La Crosse; by a sister-in-law, Charlotte Shirven of Mukwonago; and by 10 nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father; by a sister, LaVonne Shirven; and a brother, Richard Shirven.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at English Lutheran Church. The Reverend Roger Black will officiate. Entombment will be in Gardens of Peace Mausoleum at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street, La Crosse, Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m.; and at the church on Thursday from noon until the service.

Mary Seielstad
Mary Seielstad, 75, of 2622 Prospect Street, died Sunday, December 14, 1997 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse. She was born June 14, 1922 in La Crosse to P.R. and Bertha (Hintz) Emmert. She married Elmer Seielstad on May 25, 1946 in La Crosse. He preceded her in death on January 3, 1987. She graduated from La Crosse Central High School and then from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, with a B.S. and a M.A. in education. She served with the U.S. Navy, as a WAVE, during WWII as an aerographer; worked with the U.S. Weather Bureau in Lansing, Michigan, before, and in Minneapolis after, her naval service. She taught at St. Thomas More in La Crosse. She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church, serving on the church council; as a member of the WELCA; and in mission circle. She enjoyed stitchery and made church paraments and banners and also enjoyed knitting and quilting.
She is survived by three daughters, Jeanne (Mike) Reynolds of Hartford, Wisconsin, and Susan and Laura Seielstad of La Crosse; by two sons, Paul (Barbara) Seielstad of Pueblo, Colorado, and Peter Seielstad of Sparta; by a brother, David Emmert in California; by nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Barbara; half sisters, Margaret, Elizabeth and Jean; and half brother, Dudley.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church. The Reverend Richard Gilmore will officiate. Burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Homes' Gillette Street Chapel this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.; and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the service. Memorials may be given to Bethel Lutheran Church.

Juanita L. Semlar
Juanita L. Semlar, 74, of La Crosse, died Sunday, December 14, 1997 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. She was born March 25, 1923 in La Crosse to Haskall and Roberta (McHenry) Stone. She married Edward Semlar on March 27, 1941 in La Crosse. She worked for many years for the La Crosse Rubber Mills and Empire Silk Screen Printing.
She is survived by a son, Douglas (Marilyn) Semlar of La Crosse; by three daughters, Kathleen (Donald) Craig and Louise (Bernard) Hutschenreuter, both of La Crosse, and Debra Semlar Roberts and her husband Ted, of Jonesborough, Tenn.; by two sisters, Leona Burr and Corrine McDougle, both of La Crosse; by four grandsons and four granddaughters; by 14 great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Clarence Kampa; several nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Jack (Charlotte) Semlar. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a grandson.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette Street, La Crosse. The Reverend Michael Mandsager will officiate. Burial following cremation will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until the service.

Bessie L. Hobson
SPARTA, Wis. - Bessie L. Hobson, 85, of 331 So. Water Street, Sparta, died Sunday, December 14, 1997 at the Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta.
She is survived by three sons, Norman (Marilyn) Baker of Sparta, Merlin (Ruth) Baker of Stockholm, N.J., and Richard (Doris) Hobson of Racine; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lester (Doris) Baker of Linden, Wis., and Harley (Betty) Baker of Linden, Wis.; and two sisters, Alice Fall of Linden, Wis., and Ruby (Donald) McKillip of Shullsberg, Wis. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1949.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Reverend Del Begalka officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church Cemetery. Friends may call at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church on Wednesday from noon until the time of services. Memorials may be given to the Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta. The Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Frances L. Wensel
MELROSE, Wis. - Frances L. Wensel, 95, of Melrose, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997 in Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, Wis. Her body will be cremated. Private graveside services will be held in Irving Cemetery, rural Black River Falls, Wis. The Smith Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.

Cecelia A. Delaney
HARPERS FERRY, Iowa - Cecelia A. Delaney, 99, of Harpers Ferry, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997 in Thornton Manor, Lansing, Iowa, after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Wexford, rural Lansing, Iowa. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today in St. Anne-St. Joseph Church Hall, Harpers Ferry, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. scripture service. The Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon, Iowa, is assisting the family.

Pauline S. Eickman
HOLMEN, Wis. - Pauline S. Eickman, 50, of Holmen, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997 at home, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born August 3, 1947, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Felix and Antonia (Veloria) Salvador. On Sept. 9, 1968, she married Christopher J. Eickman at Fort Sheridan, Ill. She is a veteran of the United States Army. She worked for many years in the jewelry business, first, at Cremer Jewelers in La Crosse and for the last seven years at Helzberg Diamonds in La Crosse.
She is survived by her husband, Christopher of Holmen, Wis.; one daughter, Michelle (Frank) Biermeier of Lake Nebagamon, Wis.; one granddaughter, Allison Biermeier; special friends, Francie and David Nolasco of Mililani, Hawaii, and Helen Pagonis of La Crosse, Wis.; three brothers, Paul (Debbie) Salvador, Waialua, Hawaii, Stephen (Lani) Salvador of Kapulei, Hawaii, and John Salvador of Waialua, Hawaii; and one sister, Gail (Terrance) Cabalce, Wahiawa, Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.

In addition to her husband Arnold, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Swartz Sundet; three brothers, John, Gilbert and Thomas Ash; three sisters, Imogene Ash Scharpf, Alice Ash Boland and Aldace Ash; and one great-grandchild.

John L. Prew
WYOMING, Minn./PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - John L. Prew, age 55, of Wyoming Minn., and formerly of Prairie Du Chien, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie Du Chien, Wis. Military rights will be held graveside by the Prairie Du Chien Honor Guard. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today, Dec. 17, 1997 at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie Du Chien, Wis., where there will be a rosary at 4:15 p.m. and a wake scripture at 8:00 p.m.
He was born Feb. 7, 1942, in Prairie Du Chien, Wis., son of Paul and Laurayne (Phillip) Prew. He married Nancy Anderson in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked for General Motors in Janesville, Wis., and later for Advance United in Minneapolis, Minn. He was currently employed in maintenance for the city of Minneapolis for the past nine years.
He is survived by one son, Kevin Prew of White Bear Lake, Minn.; his mother, Laurayne Prew of Prairie Du Chien, Wis.; three brothers, Edward (Chris), William and Daniel Prew, all of Prairie du Chien; six sisters, Joanne (Roger) Wilhite and Ardelle Prew, both of McFarland, Wis., Pauline (Larry) Clanton of Prairie Du Chien, Mary (Ronald) Clements of Onalaska, Wis., Phyllis (John) Lane of Freeport, Ill., and Geraldine Prew of McGregor, Iowa. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jeannie; his father; two brothers, Allen and Arthur; along with one infant sister.

Marian E. Smith
SPARTA, Wis.- Marian E. Smith, 87, of R.1, Sparta, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997 in Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, Sparta. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Sparta. Friends may call from noon until the time of services in the funeral home.
