Arthur L. "Art" Mattson
NORTHFIELD, Wis. - Arthur L. "Art" Mattson, 85, of Northfield, died on Sunday, December 14, 1997 at Pine View Nursing Home, Black River Falls, where he had resided for the past 13 years. He was born on March 4, 1912 in the town of Northfield, Jackson County, to parents Charles and Mary (Johnson) Mattson. He married Ruth V. Lyon on November 16, 1935 in Pigeon Falls, and she preceded him in death on January 3, 1988. He was a dairy farmer in the Northfield area for many years. He also worked at the Trempealeau County Health Care Center in Whitehall for 12 years. He was a member of the Northfield Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and cemetery board. For many years, he and his wife were caretakers of both the church and cemetery. His favorite pastimes included hunting and fishing.
He is survived by one son, Charles (Nancy) Mattson of Hixton; two daughters, Mary (Fred) Kleba of Oconomowoc and Carol (Jim) Larson of Monroe; one daughter-in-law, Doris Mattson of Hixton; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, Ruth, he was preceded in death by his son, Alan; a daughter, Louise; an infant daughter, Elizabeth; three brothers; and five sisters.
Funeral services for Arthur L. Mattson will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 18, 1997 at Northfield Lutheran Church, with Reverend C. Dale Harrison officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, this evening from 5 to 8 p.m.; and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
Mildred E. Cure
NEW LISBON, Wis.- Mildred E. Cure, age 86, of New Lisbon, died on Monday, Dec. 15, 1997 at Hess Memorial Hospital in Mauston. She was the daughter of Robert "Bert" and May (Smith) Ritchart and was born Oct. 20, 1911 in Juneau County. She was united in marriage to Roy M. Cure on Dec. 23 1929 in Winona, Minn. Mildred has lived in Juneau County all of her life. Mildred and her husband farmed in the New Lisbon area until his death in 1960. She then was employed by F.M. Reed Lumber Co. as a bookkeeper from 1961 until she retired in 1975. She also worked as a clerk at the local grocery store. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, was a deaconess, a Ladies Mission Aid officer and a choir member for many years. Mildred was an avid sports fan and loved to knit and crochet for her family, and also a champion scrabble player.
Mildred is survived by her children, a son Robert (Shirley) Cure and three daughters, Janice (Harold) Davis, Harriet (David) Davies, and Brenda (Stephen) Day, all of New Lisbon. She is further survived by a sister-in-law, Elnora Ritchart of New Lisbon/Madison; and by 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers, Gordon, Greylan, and Robert.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in New Lisbon, with Pastors Lance Ketchum and Glen Teasdale presiding. Burial will be in the New Lisbon City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hare Funeral Home on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
William F. Rommel Jr.
MINDORO, Wis.- William F. Rommel Jr., 60, of Mindoro, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997 in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19 in the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
Hazel Marston
VIROQUA, Wis. - Hazel Marston, age 98, formerly of 220 West South Street in Viroqua, died Tuesday, December 16, 1997 in the Bethel Home in Viroqua. She was born in Seneca, Wis., on February 17, 1899 to Wilford and Anna (Griest) Marston. She lived in Columbus, Miss., for many years where she worked as a dietitian for the Mississippi State College for Women until her retirement. In 1974 she moved to Viroqua and has been a resident of the Bethel Home for about 10 years.
She is survived by a niece, Marjorie Wallestad of Viroqua, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Leota Nelson, and a sister in infancy. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 18, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Larson Funeral Home, Viroqua. The Rev. Kenneth Melby will officiate, with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday after 10 a.m.
Louis A. Kulas
HOUSTON, Minn. - Louis A. Kulas, age 84, of Houston, died Tuesday, December 16, 1997 at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. He was born in Athens, Wis., on August 14, 1913 to Andrew and Frances (Pepowska) Kulas. He married Leola Hollister in 1940. She died in 1986. He then married Dorothy Kercher in 1988. Louis graduated from Athens High School in 1932; graduated from River Falls State Teacher College in 1936; and attended the University of Minnesota for two years. He spent 39 years as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent: nine years at Prescott, Wis., Plum City, Wis., and Sharon, Wis., as teacher and school administrator; and 30 years as superintendent in Minnesota at Byron, Brownton, and Houston (for his last 13 years) before retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Houston.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Thomas (Kathy) Kulas of Houston, and Brian (Donna) Kulas of Medford, Wis.; two daughters, Jane Kulas of Rochester, Minn., and Mary Kulas of Minneapolis, Minn.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, John Kulas of Athens, Wis.; and two sisters, Lucy Rajek of Marathon, Wis., and Leona Braun of Athens, Wis. He was preceded in death by one brother.
There will be a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 19 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Houston, with the Rev. William Kulas officiating. The Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
William Bortz
William Bortz, 73, of La Crosse, died Monday, December 15, 1997 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born on January 24, 1924 in Houston County, Minn. to Stanley W. and Louise Perkins. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by wife Marie (Schoenberger) of La Crosse; one son, Jack (Elizabeth) Bortz of Ridgefield, Conn.; and three grandchildren, Christina, Matthew, and Gregory Bortz all of Ridgefield. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends may call at the Woodruff Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road, La Crosse, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Private services, following cremation, will be held at the Oak Grove Cemetery.
Freda E. Reimann
BOSCOBEL, Wis. - Freda E. Reimann, 90, of Boscobel, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997 in Boscobel Area Health Care. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 1997 from the Beeman-Patchak Funeral Home in Boscobel. Burial will be in Boscobel Cemetery. Emma C. Reardon
TOMAH, Wis. - Emma C. Reardon, 87, of Tomah, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997 in Tomah Care Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ninneman-Steele Funeral Home, where there will be a 9:30 a.m. P.C.C.W. rosary.
Kenneth R. Riepel
Kenneth R. Riepel, 67, of La Crosse died at his home on Saturday, February 7, 1998. He was born January 2, 1931, in La Crosse to Rudolph and Julia (Larson) Riepel. He married Marlene A. Schwaegerl on May 18, 1957, in La Crosse. Ken was a member of the La Crosse Eagles Aerie 1254. He worked at St. Rose Convent in La Crosse for 45 years and retired in 1993. Ken, was an avid fisherman and Green Bay Packer fan. He dearly loved his granddaughter, Brittany Johanna Jansen.
In addition to his wife, Marlene, he is survived by a daughter, Julianne (Robert) Jansen of La Crosse; a son, Joseph (Gina) of Katy, Texas; his granddaughter, Brittany; and two sisters, Patricia (Walter) Pitz and Lois Riepel, both of La Crosse. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his favorite nephew, Michael Pitz.
His body will be cremated. A Memorial Mass will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 1998, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Aquinas Schools. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
Newman L. Twite
CALEDONIA, Minn. - Newman L. Twite, 65, of Caledonia died Saturday, February 7, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born December 30, 1932, in rural Caledonia, to Oscar and Pernella (Hagen) Twite. On June 17, 1953, Newman married Julia ``Joan'' Skadson at the Immanuel Lutheran Parsonage in Caledonia. Newman served his country in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954. After his service in the military, Newman worked for Nelson Construction in Caledonia and held the position of Construction Superintendent when he resigned in 1976. He then became self-employed as a farmer and a logger, both of which he enjoyed very much.
Newman was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a member of the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post 191, both of Caledonia.
Survivors include his wife, Julia ``Joan'' and his mother Pernella, both of Caledonia; a daughter, Suzanne (Darrell) Schroeder of Caledonia; four sons, Daniel (Jeanette) of Caledonia, David of Farmington, Minn., Terry of Waterloo, Iowa and Thomas of Caledonia; five grandchildren, Connie (Joseph) Hoscheit, Timothy Schroeder, Kimberly Schroeder, Theresa Twite and Rebecca Twite, all of Caledonia; a great-grandchild, Carley August Hoscheit of Caledonia; and three brothers, Oswald Twite of Minneapolis, Odin Twite and Robert Twite, both of Caledonia. Newman was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 11, at 11 a.m. from Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Rolf T. Storlie will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call at the Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Clarence F. "Klondike" Breidel
Clarence F. "Klondike" Breidel, 62, of La Crosse died of cancer on Saturday, February 7, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. His body will be cremated. A public visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 1998, at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. There will be no service. A complete obituary will follow.

LAKE DENTON, Wis. - Roger E. Fenney, 69, of Lake Delton and rural Taylor, died on Saturday, February 7, 1998, at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 1998, at Upper Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, with burial in the church Cemetery, both in rural Taylor.
