Bernice M. Heath
MERRILLAN, Wis./CHICAGO, Ill. - Bernice M. Heath, 86, of Merrillan and formerly of Chicago, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998 in Bethel Nursing Home, Arpin, Wis. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Libertyville, Ill. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Arlington Heights, Ill. Friends may call one hour prior to services Friday at the church. Arrangements are with the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton.

Lawrence A. "Larry" Sage
ONALASKA, Wis. - Lawrence A. "Larry" Sage, 80, of Onalaska, died on Saturday, February 7, 1998 at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born November 1, 1917 in Glasgow, Montana to Edwin and Frances (Russell) Sage. He married Helen Pierce in St. James Catholic Church, La Crosse, on November 18, 1939. Larry retired from the plumbing trade in 1982. He had worked for many local plumbing contractors and was a member of the plumbers and steamfitters union Local #31. In his youth he graduated from Logan High School where he participated in sports and lettered in track. He served in the Navy during WWII. For many years he participated in various softball leagues. He was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Larry and his wife were charter members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Onalaska.
In addition to his wife, Helen, Larry is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Jon) Fort, Deb (Mike) Talle, all of Onalaska, Lori (Jerry) Bollard of Pocahontas, Iowa; three sons, Leland (Kathleen) of Onalaska, Richard (Mary) and Michael, all of La Crosse; 11 grandchildren, Jeffery and Barbara Moss, Julie Reynolds, Kristine Daley, Steven, Thomas and David Safe, Jennifer Sage-Altmann, Jonathan Talle, Brock and Phillip Altman; five great-grandchildren, Melissa and Rebecca Moss, Lindsay and Garrett Reynolds, and Alicia Sage-Altmann. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Donald.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 10, at 11 a.m. from St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Rev. William J. Matzek will officiate. Entombment will be in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of Onalaska on Monday, from 6 until 8 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., and again on Tuesday at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services. The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Hazel R. Wahlstrom
O'FALLON, Mo. - Hazel R. Wahlstrom, age 91, formerly of La Crosse, died Saturday, February 7, 1998 in Missouri. She was born November 26, 1906 in La Crosse to Charles and Johanna (Wohlert) Tranberg. She married Carl Wahlstrom on September 4, 1929 in Minneapolis, Minn. He preceded her in death on October 1, 1988. She was a member of English Lutheran Church. She also was a member of Chapter #22, Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean (Ron) Kelemen of O'Fallon, Mo., and Norma (John) Lionberger of Eau Claire, Wis.; two sons, David (Elizabeth) of Rhinelander, Wis., and Peter (Carol) of Minot, N.D.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be Friday, February 13 at 11 a.m. at English Lutheran Church. The Revs. Bob Oleson and J.L. Mattes will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street, on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. An Eastern Star service will be held at the funeral home Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Fay J. "Bud" Hillyer
Fay J. "Bud" Hillyer, 75, of La Crosse, died on Friday, February 6, 1998, in his home. He was born on October 14, 1922, in La Crosse to Walter and Anna (Balzer) Hillyer. He married Lois Erickson on August 26, 1947.
Bud retired from Trane Company in 1985 after 39 years; his first years as a welder followed by 35 years as a supervisor/foreman. He was a member of the La Crosse Lodge 1920, Loyal Order of Moose.
In his youth, Bud boxed Golden Gloves and attended Aquinas High School. He was also a chef on the Burlington Northern Railroad during World War II. He was also an avid Packer and Cub fan.
Bud is survived by his son, Ken (Carol) of West Salem; by his two special grandchildren, Aaron and Monika, both of West Salem; by a sister, Lila Meier of La Crosse; three sisters-in-law, Pearl Hillyer of Rockford, Ill., Lois Hillyer of La Crosse and Bev (Robert) Engelien of Onalaska; and his special canine friend, "Doobie." He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his parents; his brothers, Carl and Charles; a sister, Jeanette Fogel; and by his vary special nephew, Rodney ``Butch'' Fogel.
Bud will be greatly missed by all his many special friends at the La Crosse Moose Lodge and at Trane Company. He was a very loving husband and father and an extraordinary grandfather who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 10, 1998, at 11 a.m. from Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday form 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.

Darlene M. Thorson
HOBE SOUND, Fla. - Darlene M. Thorson, 68, of Hobe Sound, Fla. and formerly of La Crosse passed away Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at Martin Memorial Hospital, Stuart, Fla. after a long and courageous battle with a respiratory illness.
Darlene was born Aug. 19, 1929, to Luke and Helen Squires in Sparta, Wis. She married Ken Thorson in 1953.
After her retirement as club manager of the VFW in La Crosse, she moved to Florida.
She will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, relatives, friends and all who knew and loved her.
Darlene is survived by two daughters, Patty Thorson of Hobe Sound, Fla and Beverly (Mike) Kiesling of Onalaska, Wis.; three sons, Mark Thorson of Wilton, Wis., Ken Jr. (Wanda) Thorson of Wilton, Wis. and Mike Fritsch of Sparta, Wis.; five grandchildren, Brian (Pat) Kiesling of La Crosse, Amy (Todd) Stinson of La Crosse, Libby Thorson of Wilton, Mark Thorson Jr. of Chaseburg and Todd (Sheri) Fritsch of Sparta; six great-grandchildren, Hunter and Noah Stinson, Derek Thorson and Luke, Ashley and Krista Fritsch; and her faithful and loving dog, Benji.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Beverly Jean Squires; and one granddaughter, Sheila Fritsch.
It was Darlene's wish to be cremated. Interment at Sparta, Wis. will be at a later date.

Robert Lewis Byrne, Jr.
PARK CITY, Ill./ARCADIA, Wis. - Robert Byrne, Jr., 24, of Park City, Ill., died Friday, February 6, 1998, as the result of an automobile accident. Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Joseph V. Breidel, Jr.
- Joseph V. Breidel, Jr., age 90, of La Crosse, died Friday, February 6, 1998, in La Crosse at the home of his daughter. He was born January 22, 1908, in La Crosse to Joseph V. and Helena (Dowiasch) Breidel. On February 3, 1932, he married Helen Swartz in La Crosse, she preceded him in death on January 31, 1994.
Joseph worked as a patrolman for the La Crosse County Highway Department for 50 years until his retirement. He then worked part time for Johnnie's Bar and Restaurant and also for Schmidty's Bar and Restaurant. Joseph loved to hunt and garden.
He is survived by one daughter, Betty (Eugene) Gerke, Sr. of La Crosse; one son, Harold (LaVonne) Breidel of La Crosse; one brother, Robert Breidel of La Crosse; ten grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, February 9, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Rafacz officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.; and again on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.

Lloyd A. Cowan
GALESVILLE, Wis. - Lloyd A. Cowan, age 81, of Galesville, died Wed., Feb. 4, 1998, at Marinuka Manor Nursing Home in Galesville. He was born June 12, 1916, to Hugh and Mary (Dobbs) Cowan in Toledo, Ill. He came to this area in 1935 with the C.C.C., where he worked on the Perrot Park project. He was employed by the Burlington Northern formerly C.B. and Q. railroad for 20 years and then as an Electrician and maintenance for the village of Trempealeau, until he retirement. Lloyd married Muriel Pedersen on July 2, 1975, at St. Bartholemew's Catholic Church in Trempealeau.
Lloyd is survived by his wife; two sons, Charles (Christine) Cowan of Peoria, Ill. and John Cowan of La Crosse; six daughters, Margaret (Richard) Wing and Ellen Pratt, both of La Crosse, Catherine Knopf of Milpitas, Calif., Virginia (Peter) Stanislawski of Trempealeau, Vivian (Mort) Simerson of Peoria, Ill. and Teresa (Steve) McAllister of Gulf Port, Miss.; 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; three sisters, May Heckman of Hales Corners, Wis., Estilene Walker of Albuquerque, N.M. and Mildred McMillan of Mattoon, Ill.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Margaret (Shrake), three brothers, two sisters and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 9, 1998, at St. Bartholemew's Catholic Church in Trempealeau. Fr. Robert Wagner will officiate. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery in Trempealeau. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Smith Mortuary in Galesville on Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998.

Judith S. Payne
SENECA, Wis. - Judith S. Payne, 71, of Seneca, died Thursday, February 5, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 9, 1998, at the Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Sterling Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills from 4-9 p.m., Sunday with a 8 p.m. Prayer Service; and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to The Prairie Memorial Hospice, Prairie du Chien, or the Seneca First Responders.

Barbara Struxness
VIROQUA, Wis. - Barbara Struxness, age 34, of R. 4 Viroqua, died Friday, February 6, 1998, at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. at the Franklin Lutheran Church in Folsom. Burial in Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday after 12:30 p.m.

Vernon W. Rauk
KALISPELL, Mont. - Vernon W. Rauk, age 79, formerly of Taylor, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 1998, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell, Montana. Private family services are being planned for later this summer. Buffalo Hill Funeral Home is in charge of cremation and arrangements.
