Aelred H. "Al" Stellpflug
Aelred H. "Al" Stellpflug, 79, of La Crosse, died Friday, February 6, 1998 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born January 11, 1919 in the town of Gale to Francis and Winnifred (Byrne) Stellpflug. On October 14, 1946 he married Shirley Laufenberg in La Crosse. Al was employed by the La Crosse Fire Department for 31 years and retired in 1978 as Assistant Fire Chief. He was an army veteran of World War II serving with the 32nd Division and later attained the rank of Colonel with the USAR. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in La Crosse and an active volunteer with many organizations including the Red Cross. Al was also an active member of American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse and the post firing squad.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; five children, Susan (Jerry) Bell of Montville, Ohio, Louise (Gary) Genske of Elkhorn, Wis., Mark (Renee) of Columbus, Wis., Tim (Debra) of Sparta, Wis., and John (Nilda) of Appleton, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Bender of Eustis, Fla. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael, and a grandson, Torin Wagner; one brother and three sisters.
A memorial service will be Monday, February 16, 1998 at 1 p.m. from Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem. Rev. Alfred Hemmersbach will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, with military rites by American Legion Post 52. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, February 16, from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials are preferred.

SPARTA, Wis. - Scott A. Kast, 35, of Sparta, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998 in Sparta. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Sparta. Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Sparta. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta; and on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. There will be a prayer service at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Monday.

SPARTA, Wis. - Dustin David James Vian, 2, of Sparta, died Friday in his home. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta. Burial will be in Farmers Valley Cemetery, rural Sparta. Friends may call at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 to 11 a.m.
Wesley W. Gerke
NORWALK, Wis. - Wesley W. Gerke, 70, of Norwalk, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998 suddenly at his home.
He was born September 15, 1927 to August and Matilda (Radloff) in the town of Ridgeville. He was united in marriage to Geraldine Henry on Nov. 12, 1954 at St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church. His life long love was farming. He received awards for farming and several years ago was named "Farmer of the Year." He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a lifelong member of St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church, Ridgeville.
In addition to his wife, Geraldine, he is survived by four sons, Tom (Michelle), Terry (Deanne) and Dave, all of Norwalk, and Brian of Kendall; five daughters, Sandy (Rollie) Campfield and Susie (Jim) Friedl of Kendall, Barb (Gary) Sime, Cheryl (Mark) Stees, and Gail (Kitt) Storkel, all of Tomah; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Reatha (Merwin) Wyatt of St. Paul, Minn.; and three brothers, Robert (La Vonne) of Norwalk, Alfred (Ruth) and Martin (Darlene) of St. Paul, Minn. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Delores Grabitski and Virgil Gerke.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, 11 a.m. at St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church, Ridgeville. Reverend Mark Panning will officiate. Burial will be in the South Ridge Lutheran Cemetery, town of Wellington.
Family and friends are invited to call Monday, Feb. 9, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Smith-Nelson Funeral Home in Wilton and Tuesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Alvin "Hoppy" Hopkins
CASHTON, Wis. - Alvin "Hoppy" Hopkins, age 77, of Cashton, died on Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua.
Alvin was born November 14, 1920, in Rockton, Wis. to Aaron and Tillie (Jacobson) Hopkins. He was married to Myrtle Frydenlund April 4, 1944, and she died Feb. 2, 1979. He then married Martha Johnson-Marx October 24, 1982.
Hoppy was a mechinist for International Harvester many years. When he moved to Cashton he was employed by The Village and Wonder Wash Car Wash. He served his country in the Armed Forces and was a member of the Cashton V.F.W. and the American Legion.
Hoppy is survived by his wife, Martha; three children, Allyn and (Elvena) Hopkins of San Antonio, Texas, Nancy (John) Reynolds of Waukegan, Ill. and Ricky (Sue) Hopkins of Kenosha, Wis.; eight step-children, Richard (Cindi Boortz) Marx of Rochester, Minn., Robert (Cyndee) Marx of Washburn, Wis., Rolland Marx of Westby, Wis., Russell (Kathy) Marx of Rockland, Wis., Mary Jo (Tim) Severson of Holmen, Wis., Rodney (Lori) Marx of St. Joseph Ridge, Wis., Roger (Laura Renau) Marx of Ashland, Wis., Randy (Stephine Moss) Marx of La Crosse, Wis.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 22 step-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, Myrtle, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Otto, Bertrum and Louie; four sisters, Lelia Stout, Goldie Hopkins, Vivian Hopkins and Elizabeth Watkins.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. from the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Cashton with Pastor Gregory Geier officiating. Relatives and friends are asked to call at the Torkelson Funeral Chapel in Cashton on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 8 p.m. They may also call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. to the time of the service. Burial will be on Tuesday in the Highland Park Cemetery in Libertyville, Illinois.
Earl E. Sanders
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Earl Sanders, 74, of 1420 N. Marshall St., Milwaukee, Wis., died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998 at St. Mary's Hospice in Milwaukee. He was born to the late Elmer and Rachel Lund Sanders in Ashland, Wis. He was a 1950 graduate of Northland College in Ashland. He served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II.
He married Betty Anderson of Coon Valley, Wis. in Chicago, Ill. on July 27, 1968. He taught high school science and biology for 33 years, retiring in 1986. He owned and operated Waverly Beach Campground on Lake Superior, with his wife, Betty for 20 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Arvella Fuller of Byron, Ill. and Lois Lewis of Ashland, Wis.; one niece, Juliette (Robert) Summers of Byron, Ill.; a great-nephew, Michael Earl; and a great-niece, Sandra Rae.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Ashland, Wis. If desired memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Elsie A. Kraus, 89, a resident of the Hillview Health Care Center, died on Saturday, February 7, 1998 at the care center. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Asbury United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until services Wednesday at the church. Amy M. Herman
WHITEHALL, Wis. - Amy M. Herman, age 74, of rural Whitehall, Wis., died on Friday, February 6, 1998 in the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in La Crosse, Wis. Amy was born on July 3, 1923 in Whitehall, Wis. to Marcus and Anna (Eagen) Arneson. She married George M. Herman on October 25, 1941 in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Whitehall, Wis. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1988.
Amy and George farmed in rural Whitehall. Amy was also employed with National Presto Industries in Eau Claire, Wis. and later with Gale Manufacturing and Gale Products, both in Galesville, Wis.
Mrs. Herman was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and was active in its various organizations.
Amy is survived by a daughter, Grayle Berg of Blair, Wis.; two grandsons, Mark (Becky Johnson) of Taylor, Wis., and Brian (Lisa) Berg of Ellsworth, Wis.; three great-grandchildren, Teddi Lynn Johnson and Justin Andrew and Ian Matthew Berg; four brothers, Roy Arneson of Whitehall, Wis., Floyd (Ruth) Arneson of Taylor, Wis., Vernon (Doris) Arneson of Antigo, Wis., and Lloyd Arneson of Tomah, Wis.; a sister, Helen (Vernon) Vold of Whitehall, Wis.
In addition to her parents and husband, Amy was preceded in death by two sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. in Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery, both in rural Whitehall, Wis.
Visitation will be on Monday, February 9, 1998 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall, Wis., and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.

HILLSBORO, Wis. - Ella E. Parker, age 98, of Hillsboro, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998 at the St. Joseph's Nursing Home, Hillsboro. SPARTA, Wis. - Carol J. Kuester, 57, of Sparta, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998 at the University Hospitals in Madison.
She is survived by her husband, Paul; one daughter, Paula W., Trenton, N.J.; one son, Scott, Silver Springs, Md.; her mother, Louise Janes of Sparta; and one brother, Merlin Janes of Sparta.
