Gary W. `Gar' Lubinsky
ONALASKA, Wis. - Gary W. ``Gar'' Lubinsky, 56, of Onalaska, died Wednesday, February 4, 1998 in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born February 27, 1941, in Milwaukee, to Richard and Ellen (Forss) Lubinsky. He married Colleen Haugen on August 4, 1962. He was the owner of Columbia Studios, which he operated with his wife and his two sons.
Gary graduated from Logan High School in 1959 and from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1963. Gary lived the ``good''life with his family and many friends. He was an avid boater and he and Colleen lived on their boat during the summer. He not only enjoyed cooking, but was really good at it. He derived a lot of pleasure from his computer and the internet and spent a part of every day ``on the net'', following the stock market. He and Colleen truly appreciated the friends who were a part of the ``59er diners''.
In addition to his wife, Colleen, he is survived by two sons, David (Colleen) of Onalaska and Jeffrey and his special friend Tammy Wills, of Madison; by his mother, Ellen Terpstra of Onalaska; by two brothers, Richard (Betty) Lubinsky of Sun Prairie and Thomas ``T.J.'' (June) Lubinsky of Onalaska; by nephews, Richard (Connie) of Aurora, Ill., and Tommy (Maggie) of Weyauwega; nieces, Lori and her special friend Andy, of Madison, Sue (Marty) Kosobucki of Appleton, and Sheri (Brad) Hults of Stoughton; sisters-in-law, Nancy Sagen of Charlotte, N.C., Denise Sagen of Charlotte, N.C., and Melissa (Dr. T. Waring) Johnston of Simpsonville, S.C.; and aunts and uncles, Walter (Esther) Lubinsky of Oshkosh, Sharon Lubinsky of La Crosse, Vi Zerell of Onalaska and Arlene (William) Rinartz of Venice, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard G. Lubinsky; his uncle Frank Lubinsky; his stepfather, Donald Terpstra; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at North Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Allen W. Townsend will officiate. Burial will be in Onalaska Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main Street, Onalaska, today from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service.
Memorials may be given to the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation; to the La Crosse Boys and Girls Club; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Margaret V. Haefs
LA CRESCENT, Minn. - Margaret V. Haefs, 83, of La Crescent, died on Tuesday, February 3, 1998 at the La Crescent Health Care Center. She was born on June 16, 1914 in the town of Greenfield, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, to Edward and Amelia (Hecht) Muenzenberger. She married Hans V. Haefs on November 21, 1934 in La Crosse. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1983. Hans and Margaret were charter members of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Crescent and together they owned and operated Haefs Construction in La Crescent for over 40 years.
Margaret is survived by two daughters, Caroline (James) Zoes of Woodstock, Illinois, and Evelyn (H. Charles) Bone of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; three sons, Harley (Carol) Haefs of La Crosse, Donald (Annette) Haefs of La Crescent, Minnesota, and Melvin (Cozette) Haefs of La Crescent, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren, Brian (Tammy) Haefs of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Amy (Gregory) Hoffman of Eagan, Minnesota, Jolene (Nathan) Lee of Evanston, Illinois, Michael (Terrie) Haefs of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Kenneth (Amy) Haefs of La Crescent, Minnesota, Gregory Haefs of Lisle, Illinois, Stephanie Haefs of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Cassandra Zoes, James Zoes and Christiana Zoes, all of Woodstock, Illinois, and Gwendolyn Bone and Rebecca Bone, both of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Radtke of La Crescent, Minnesota; and a sister-in-law, Rosie Muenzenberger of West Salem, Wisconsin. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Clarence and Edward.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 1998 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of La Crescent. The Rev. Paul A. Ibisch will officiate. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is in charge of arrangements.
Myrtle L. Whitfield
LA CRESCENT, Minn. - Myrtle L. Whitfield, 91, of La Crescent, Minn., died on Thursday, February 5, 1998 at the La Crescent Healthcare Center. She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on February 6, 1906. She married Joseph R. Whitfield in May of 1943. He preceded her in death on July 24, 1992. Myrtle was the oldest member of the La Crescent United Methodist Church, having attended since July 4, 1920. She was also a 52-year charter member of La Crescent American Legion Post 595 Women's Auxiliary.
Myrtle is survived by two grandsons, Joseph (Sally) Shepardson of Nashville, Tenn., and Paul (Elisabeth) Shepardson of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; three sisters, Marie Cook of La Crescent, Bernice Ender of Hokah and Florence Larson of Newcastle, Calif.; one son-in-law, Milo Shepardson of La Crescent; five nephews; and three nieces. In addition to her husband, Joseph and her parents, Charles and Esther (Wetchen) Behrndt, she was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, one granddaughter and one sister.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 9 at 11 a.m. from the La Crescent United Methodist Church. The Revs. Mark B. Miller and Paul Kobi will officiate. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed to the La Crescent United Methodist Church.
Michael E. Kuhn
TOMAH/APPLETON, Wis. - Michael E. Kuhn, 47, of Tomah and formerly of Appleton, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998 in Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Tomah. It was Michael's wish to be cremated. A memorial service will be held in the spring. The Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, Tomah, is assisting the family with arrangements. ``Rest in peace, Michael, we love you very much. Your family.''
LaVern F. Neas
BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - LaVern F. Neas, 76, of Black River Falls, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 in Black River Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday from the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, and burial will be in Little Norway Lutheran Cemetery, rural Black River Falls. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
Philip G. Laufle
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Philip G. Laufle, 73, of West Salem, died Thursday, February 5, 1998 at his son's residence in West Salem. He was born November 29, 1924, in Austin, Minn., to Carl and Maude (Dapper) Laufle. On January 3, 1948, he married Elizabeth ``Bette'' Kohner at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winona, Minn.
Philip was a Navy veteran of WWII, having served aboard the U.S.S. North Carolina in the South Pacific. He received the Purple Heart from injuries sustained while under attack during the April 6, 1945 shore bombardment. Philip also received numerous silver and bronze campaign stars, representing other battles in the South Pacific Theatre. He was employed as a professional yacht captain for 22 years and had owned and operated a charter sport fishing service. Philip was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, and the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51, both of West Salem.
Survivors include his wife, Bette; one daughter, Mary Laufle-Barcinas and husband Paul, of Homestead, Fla.; two sons, Jeffery and wife Sheri, of West Salem, and Michael and wife Lisa, of Key Largo, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Jacob and Chelsea Laufle, both of Onalaska, and Marena and Michala Laufle, both of Key Largo, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy O'Donnell; and a brother, Robert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Sunday, February 8 at 2 p.m. from St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 210 W. Hamlin St., West Salem. Father Bob Hegenbarth will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of services. The Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.
Glenn A. Rule
TOMAH, Wis. - Glenn A. Rule, 63, of Tomah, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born June 6, 1934 to Fred and Lucille (Nuttall) Rule in Juneau County, Wis. He was united in marriage to Barbara Fowler on Jan. 22, 1955. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Glenn worked most of his life as a sales representative for the communication industry. He was a member of Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post #201, Tomah. He was also a mason and a member of the Hemden Masonic Lodge in Hemden, MA.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Wilton; two sons, Darrell (Dawn) and Donald of Indiana; one daughter Patricia (Dean) Leis of Wilton; six grandchildren, Raymond, Shona, Nicole, Megan, Jason and Jessica; and one great-grandchild, Jordann.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Ann.
Masonic services will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah. Burial will be in the Hustler Cemetery, with military honors by Tomah American Legion Post 201.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of services.
Warren C. Moe
LEWISTON, Minn. - Warren C. Moe, 75, died Friday, January 30, 1998, at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, February 2, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at St. Rose of Lima Church with a Christian Prayer Service being held at 4 p.m. and the Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to service at church on Monday. VIROQUA, Wis. - Alfred Nelson, 91, of Viroqua, passed away on Friday, January 30, 1998, at the Bethel Home in Viroqua.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2, at 11 a.m. at the Kickapoo United Lutheran Church in Folsom. Burial will be in the North Kickapoo Cemetery. FERRYVILLE, Wis. - Ruth E. Colsch, 73, of rural Ferryville, died Thursday, January 29, 1998, at her home. As were her wishes, cremation will be followed by private family memorial services at their home.
Clara A. Alt
Clara A. Alt, age 96, of La Crosse died on Thursday, January 29, 1998. She was born in Spring Green, Wisconsin on May 22, 1901, to John and Catherine Pletzer. She married Albert Alt and he preceded her in death on April 21, 1959.
She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine (Harold) Fairbanks of La Crosse; a son, Donald A. Alt of San Francisco; a sister, Hilda Pulvermacher of Lonerock, Wis.; a brother, Raymond of Spring Green, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Tom and Margaret McNaulty of Black River Falls, Rich and Judy Degenhart of La Crosse, Dennis and Sharon Suntken of La Crosse, Ken and Linda Fairbanks of La Crosse, Gary and Barb Topel of Texas, Doug Fairbanks of Texas, Dennis and Sue King of La Crescent and Tom and Mary Lou Miller of California; 15 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three daughters, a sister and four brothers. Private funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2, at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. The Reverend Mancin Mankowski will officiate and burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Clara will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
