Elbin E. Sletten
DE SOTO, Wis. - Elbin E. Sletten, age 74, of De Soto, died Tuesday, February 11, 1997, in his home.
He was born July 16, 1922, in Vernon County to Elmer and Ruth (Henry) Sletten. He served with the 5th Army during World War II. He worked for the Heinz Co. in Milwaukee for about two years before returning to De Soto. He was a member of the De Soto VFW Post 8123.
Elbin is survived by one sister, Patricia Johnson of Viroqua; one aunt, Alice Yanzer of La Crosse; four nephews, Terry (Marlene) Johnson of Orlando, Fla., Rick (Mary) Johnson of Chaseburg, Dennis (Cindy) Johnson of Midlothian, Va., and Lyder (Simone) Johnson of Orlando; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by one sister, Leda Martincichi; and one brother in infancy.
The funeral service for Elbin will be held on Saturday, February 15, 1997, at 1:30 p.m. in the Larson Funeral Home, De Soto. The Rev. Kimberly Riebe will officiate. Burial will be in the De Soto Cemetery with military rites by the De Soto VFW Post.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday after 12:30 p.m.

Barbara Jean DeVault
Barbara Jean DeVault, age 60 years, of 420 Fanta Reed Road, La Crosse, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, at her home after a four year courageous battle with cancer.
She was born January 15, 1937 in Moultrie, Georgia, to D.J. and Lillian Collins. She married Jay DeVault on March 31, 195,3 in Sedalia, Missouri. Jean and her husband owned and operated Jay's Mobile Home and R.V. Center in La Crosse. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 22, of La Crosse, and president of the Elkettes Lodge 300, of La Crosse, and a member of the Tri-State Pheasants Forever Organization, Chapter 61. This year she and her husband, Jay, received the award plaque of Hen and Rooster for dedicated services to the chapter. She was an accomplished seamstress and an avid hunter, fisher, trapper and gardener. Her strength throughout her illness was an inspiration to her family.
She is survived by her husband, Jay of La Crosse; three sons, Richard DeVault, and his fiance, Margaret Stoehr, of Coon Valley, Steven (Jane) DeVault of La Crosse and Kevin DeVault of La Crosse; two daughters, Victoria (Allan) Hoel of Randolph, Minn., and Theresa (Rick) Stetzer of Onalaska; eight grandchildren, Audra, Erik, Annie, Brandon, Nicholas, Brian, Dillon and Dane; two brothers, Jimmy (Penny) Collins and Samuel (Brenda) Collins, both of Albany, Georgia; one sister, Shirley Greene of Leesburg, Georgia; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 1997, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in La Crosse. Rev. Donald Iliff will officiate. Burial will be in the French Island Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska from 4 till 8 p.m. on Friday, and at the church on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Eastern Star Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Clifford T. Kirking
CASHTON, Wis. - Clifford T. Kirking, age 75, of Cashton, died Friday, August 29, at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse.
He was born April 6, 1922 in Vernon County to Clarence and Gladys (McDaniel) Kirking. His Baptism was on July 16, 1922 in Westby. Clifford and his wife, Elaine Olson were united in marriage on September 19, 1942, shortly before Clifford left for military service. While in the service he was involved in military campaigns and battles including Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Citations and decorations include European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Battle Star, four Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, and TSFET 44. He was a member of the Portland Lutheran Church. After his retirement as a semi driver, he enjoyed delivering meals for the Cashton Nutrition Center and working at the Cashton Farm Supply.
Clifford will be remembered and missed by his wife, Elaine of Cashton; three children, Shirley (Ron) Griggs of Farmington Hills, Mich., Alan (Rita) Kirking of Viroqua, Wis., and Mary (James) Silha of DePere, Wis.; one daughter-in-law, Faye Kirking; seven grandchildren, Kevin, Jonathan, Kirsten, Amanda, Tammy, Jennifer, and Allyson; and one great-grandchild, Johanna. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Betty; one son, Jeffrey; and two brothers, Donald and LeRoy.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 1, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the Portland Lutheran Church near Cashton. Pastor John Stennes-Spidahl will preside. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Relatives and friends are asked to call at the Torkelson Funeral Chapel in Cashton on Sunday, August 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. They may also call on the day of services from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be given to the American Cancer Society.

Daniel T. Pittman
Daniel T. Pittman, 44, of La Crescent, died on Friday, August 29, 1997 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born on June 24, 1953 in La Crosse, Wisconsin to Elwin and Geraldine (Hovde) Pittman. He married Elaine Nasseth on October 8, 1977 in La Crescent. Daniel had worked at the G. Heileman Brewery for 20 years. He loved to ride his Harley's, especially on his yearly trip to Sturgis. He was an avid collector of Science Fiction Memorabilia.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Elaine; a daughter, Amy Pittman, and a son, Shannon Pittman, both living at home; three sisters, Victoria Hart of La Crosse, Pat (Randall) Christenson of West Salem, and Jeannette Pittman of La Crescent; one brother, Steven Pittman of Roebling, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 1997 at the Church of the Crucifixion. The Rev. Donald W. Grubisch will officiate. Burial will be in the Crucifixion Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. There will be a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Helen M. Stoda
Helen M. Stoda, age 82, of La Crosse, died Friday, August 29, 1997 in the home of her daughter.
She was born April 13, 1915 in Ferryville, Wis. to Grant C. and Minta B. (Glass) Williams. She married Dareld C. Stoda, August 4, 1932 in Victory, Wis. She loved her family and had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by one daughter, Pat (Steven) Lundsten of La Crosse; one granddaughter, Lonnie Lundsten; one sister, Irene Ferguson of Missouri. She is further survived by Raymond and LaVerna Copper of La Crosse, and Valdo and Virginia Stoda of Tomah; as well as special friends, the Norenberg family, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dareld, February 3, 1978, and two daughters, Bonnie Jeann and Marlene Joanne, her parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, 1997 at the Blaschke Funeral Home, 401 West Ave. So. Reverend Brian C. King will officiate with burial to be in the Victory Cemetery, Victory, Wis. Friends and family may call from 1 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Memorials preferred to Gundersen Medical Foundation.

Andrew James Moen
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Andrew James Moen, infant son of Daniel and Kari (Wahl) Moen, of West Salem, died Thursday, August 28, 1997 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born August 23, 1997 in La Crosse at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center.
Survivors include his parents; his twin sister, Hannah Elizabeth; his maternal grandmother, Patricia Wahl of Neillsville, Wis.; his paternal grandparents, James and Helen Moen of West Salem; his maternal aunt, Nancy Wahl of Neillsville, Wis.; his maternal uncle, Thomas Wahl of Las Vegas, N.V.; his paternal aunt and uncle, Judi and Michael Shepherd of La Crosse; and two cousins, Alyssa Wahl of Neillsville, Wis., and Brooke Shepherd of La Crosse. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Roger Wahl.
A private family graveside service and burial will be held on Sunday, August 31, 1997 in Neshonoc Cemetery, West Salem. Pastor Philip A. Borleske will officiate. There will be no visitation. Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.

Sylvia M. Erickson
CALEDONIA, Minn. - Sylvia M. Erickson, 81, of Caledonia, died Friday, August 29, 1997 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born August 22, 1916 in Wilmington Township, Minn. to Alfred C. and Ingeborg (Buxengard) Johnson. On December 20, 1936 she married Gerhard Erickson at the Wilmington Lutheran Church, Wilmington Township. Together they farmed in Wilmington Township for 16 years before moving into the city of Caledonia. After more than 47 years of marriage Gerhard preceded Sylvia in death on July 20, 1984.
Survivors include a foster-daughter, Julie Johnson of McGregor, Iowa; three foster-granddaughters, Kristine Johnson, and Jennifer and Nicole Troester, all of McGregor, Iowa; two sisters, Iveda Sauer of Spring Valley, Minn., and Selma Clark of Heath, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Johnson of Austin, Minn., and Odys Johnson of Byron, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Alice Hagen; and an infant, Nora Johnson; and five brothers, Harry, Gilbert, Tilman, Burton, and Orlando Johnson.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 3, at 11 a.m. from the Wilmington Lutheran Church, Wilmington Township. Rev. Rolf T. Storlie and Rev. Elizabeth Stempinski will officiate. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Friends may call at the Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Wilma June Johnston
Wilma June Johnston, age 93, of 2501 Shelby Road, died in the Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center on Sunday, August 31, 1997. She was born in Pepin County on June 22, 1904 to Charles and Jessie (Broatch) Valine. She had married Roy B. Sampson and he preceded her in death in 1952. She then married Thomas Johnston and he preceded her in death in 1979. Wilma was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Following the death of her husband Roy Sampson, she completed his term as sheriff, making her the first lady sheriff in the state of Wisconsin.
She is survived by her son, Roy L. Sampson of Springdale, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Deanne Bouska of Blue Ridge, Texas, Kim Hinckel of Cedar Hill, Texas, Laura Mathews of Russellville, Arkansas and Roy C. Sampson of Springdale, Arkansas; a stepdaughter, Sharon Haas of Manitou Springs, Colorado; a stepson, Clyde Johnston of Marina del Rey, California; and a step-grandson, Tim Haas of Manitou Springs, Colorado. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother Harry.
Services will be held on Wednesday, September 3 at 11 a.m. at the Sletten McKee Hanson Funeral Home. Reverend Wesley White will officiate and burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin, Wisconsin. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Donna Louise Dohlin Copper
TOMAH, Wis. - Donna Louise Dohlin Copper, 69, of Tomah, died Sunday, August 31, 1997 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, after a long illness. She was born March 19, 1928 to Louis and Delia (Ghelfi) Dohlin in New Albin, Iowa. She is a graduate of Aquinas High School in La Crosse and later graduated from the La Crosse School of Beauty. On November 20, 1948 she married the late Ross G. Copper Jr. She worked as a beautician in La Crosse, as a wedding cake decorator in Fifield, Wis., the Tomah Cafe, Badger Restaurant, Bandbox Laundry, Union Camp and as a houseparent at the Schaller Group Home in Tomah. She was also employed by the La Crosse Visiting Nurses Association in La Crosse.
She is survived by seven loving children and their partners: Glen (Karen) Copper of Milwaukee, Julie Liska of La Crosse, Teresa Fulton of Tomah, Penelope Retzlaff of Sparta, Jennifer (Lon) Greeno of Camp Douglas, Cody Copper (David Brzeczek) of Warrens and Abby (Jeff) Duebler of Tomah; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two aunts; an uncle; several cousins; and many cherished friends, all who will dearly miss her. She also leaves behind a loyal companion, Buffy, her cocker spaniel.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 East Monowau Street, Tomah, on Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m., and from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 4, 1997 at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home in Tomah. Rev. Edwin Stigen will officiate. Burial will be held in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Tomah.
