Ruby Eileen Baltz
ELROY, Wis. - Ruby Eileen Baltz, of Elroy, Wis., passed away on Sunday, January 25, 1998, at the home of her son and his wife, Mark and Gail Baltz, of Sparta, Wis.
The daughter of Gerald and Marvel (White) Collins, she was born May 22, 1923, in Union Center, Wis. Ruby was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church at South Ridge, Ontario, Wis. On May 31, 1947, she was married to Lyle E. Baltz at St. Matthew's. They farmed in the Town of Wellington for 40 years.
She worked at Badger Ordinance near Lake Delton and Parker Pen in Janesville and later worked for the printing office in Elroy, Wis. Ruby was a devoted member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, having been a member and past officer of the Ladies Aid and serving as a Sunday School teacher. Ruby loved music and she used her lovely alto voice to praise her Lord and Savior in the church choir for many years. Throughout the years she was associated with and served a an officer in the following organizations: President of Wisconsin Wool Growers Auxiliary, member of Monroe County Sheep Producers, past president of the Kendall Senior Citizens and a project leader for the Happy Farmers 4-H Club of Kendall.
Ruby is survived by her children: Nancy (Wayne) Close, of Tomah; Janet (Ronald) Bladl, of Yuba; Janice (Donald) Fanta, of Hillsboro; and Mark (Gail) Baltz of Sparta; 13 grandchildren, Timothy (Roberta), Dawn, Jamie, Jeffrey, Wendy, Matthew, Kenneth, Shelly, Daniel, Paul, Sara, Patrick and Jenna; and four great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Jacob, Ashley, and Jesse. She is also survived by a brother, Horace "Bub" (Eleanor) Collins of La Crosse, and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Baltz, of Kendall; Martha Collins of Mauston; and Jean Collins of Elroy.
In addition to her husband, Lyle, Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Michael; a grandson, Christopher Baltz; a brother, Douglas; and a sister, Carol.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, January 28, 1998 at 1 p.m. at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Town of Wellington, with the Reverend Fred Fedke officiating. Interment will be in the Lutheran Cemetery at South Ridge.
Relatives and friends may call at the Smith-Nelson Funeral Home in Kendall on Tuesday, January 27 from 4 to 9 p.m. and may call at the church on Wednesday from 12 p.m. until the time of service.
Rolf H. Rude
BLAIR, Wis. - Rolf H. Rude, 82, of Blair, Wis. died Saturday, January 24, 1998 at his home.
Rolf was born January 23, 1916 in the Trempealeau county town of Preston, Wis. to Harold and Regina (Christopherson) Rude. He married Inez Otterson June 14, 1941 in Blair, Wis.
Rolf and Inez farmed in rural Blair prior to moving to Blair in 1979. Rolf was also employed with the Trempealeau County Highway Department prior to his retirement.
Mr. Rude was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Blair and served terms on the Board of Deacons, the Board of Trustees and was a member of the choir. He was also a past director of the Preston Co-op Creamery, AMPI, WBI Co-op and Blair Shipping Association.
Rolf is survived by his wife, Inez Rude of Blair, Wis.; a daughter, Beverly (William) Schlink of Bloomington, Minn.; a son, Ron (Karen) Rude of Sandusky, Ohio; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mable Jackson of Albuquerque, N.M. and Helen (Milton) Lokken of Loyal, Wis.
In addition to his parents, Rolf was preceded in death by a brother, Oswald and two brothers-in-law.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 1998 at 11 a.m. in the First Lutheran Church with burial in the Rest Haven Cemetery, both Blair, Wis. Revs. Kevin Jones and John Twiton will officiate.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 27, 1998 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Blair, Wis.; and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.
Myrtle Hallan Brueggeman
CALEDONIA, Minn. - Myrtle Hallan Brueggeman, 90, of Caledonia, Minn., and formerly of Spring Grove, Minn., passed away Monday, January 26, 1998, at the Lutheran Home of Caledonia.
She was born August 2, 1907, in Spring Grove to Oscar and Nellie (Onsgard) Hallan. She married George Brueggeman on September 28, 1935. He preceded her in death on August 28, 1970. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, where she was baptized and confirmed. She was a graduate of the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in La Crosse, Wis., and practiced her profession as a registered nurse until her marriage, when she and her husband moved to Janesville, Wis., where George was employed by General Motors Company. They were members of the First Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her son Fred (Jeanne) Brueggeman of Los Alamos, N.M., three grandchildren; Jeffrey (Wendy) Brueggeman, Denver, Col., Christine Brueggeman, Santa Fe, N.M. and Karin (Thomas) Anderson, Everett, Wash.; four sisters, Neva (Elmer) Bunge, Spring Grove, Minn., Ona (Bertrand) Ryan, St. Paul, Minn., Edna (Robert) Burns, Caledonia, Minn., Gladys (Orval) Omodt, Aberdeen, S.D., and a special cousin, Valborg Hallan, Northfield, Minn. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nephews, and great-nieces, other relatives and friends.
Besides her husband George, she was preceded in death by her parents, a baby brother, and three brothers-in-law.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 29, 1998 at 11 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, Minn. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pastor Zane Anderson will officiate.
Friends may call at the Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove, Minn. Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Myrtle was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend with a cheerful smile, and a sunny outlook on life. A good friend to all who knew her and to all who so lovingly cared for her these last years. We will miss her and thank God for the years we have had together.
Kenneth A. Falk
Kenneth A. Falk, 59, of La Crosse, died on Sunday, January 25, 1998 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born on June 27, 1938 in Milwaukee, Wis., to Dean and Magdalene (Wiedemann) Falk. He married Arlene Johnson on October 24, 1970 in La Crosse. Ken was an Air Force veteran, having served with the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing from 1957 to 1961. He attended Marquette University and worked at the G. Heileman Brewing Co. in La Crosse, as an accountant. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1254 of La Crosse.
In addition to his wife, Arlene, he is survived by his stepmother, Louise Falk of Milwaukee; a sister, Geraldine (George) Musil of Milwaukee; a brother, Roland (Doris) Falk of Wichita Falls, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 1998 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the American Heart Association. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
Harry H. Miyamoto
Harry H. Miyamoto, age 80, of La Crosse, died at his home on Monday, January 26, 1998.
He was born in Hilo, Hawaii, on July 14, 1917, to Tatsugoro and Taki (Yoshinaga) Miyamoto. With the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Army and became a decorated veteran of the heroic 100th/442nd ``Go For Broke'' battalion. After training at Fort McCoy, he went overseas, where he received a battlefield commission to second lieutenant and was eventually wounded in battle in Italy. Harry never forgot his fallen comrades.
After the service, Harry settled in La Crosse and worked at the Post Office for 30 years, retiring in 1977. He married Marcella Fouter in 1943 and they later divorced. He then married Dorothy Hackbart in 1951. Harry was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Ernest; and Marcella and Dorothy.
Harry is survived by his brother, Paul (Cici) Miyamoto; and his nephew, Randy and his family of Honolulu, Hawaii. Furthermore, he is survived by his children and grandchildren: Ken (Sue) Miyamoto of Bloomington, Minn., and their children, Trevor and Mariko; Bud (Mitzi) Miyamoto of La Crosse and their sons, Chad and Kenny; Margaret (Steven) Beulow of Los Alamos, N.M., and their daughters, Hana and Sara; Donna (Ken) Groetsch of Des Moines, Iowa, and their daughter, Amelia; and Mick (Anne) Miyamoto of La Crosse, and their children, Monica and Terry.
In addition to loving his family, Harry was passionate about a wide array of sports. Earlier in life, he was an avid ice fisherman, but then spent his later years ``honing his skills'' as an armchair quarterback. He treasured his past involvement in the Central High School Red Raider Rooters and the UW-La Crosse Quarterback Club.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 1998 at 11 a.m. from the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. Rev. J.L. Mattes will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Hospice Nursing Services at Gundersen Lutheran Home Care, 811 Monitor St., La Crosse.
Harry's cremains will be interred in the Punch Bowl Military Cemetery in Honolulu at a later date.
Stanley LeRoy Thurston
Stanley LeRoy Thurston, 81, a resident of the Tri-County Lutheran Home in Pigeon Falls, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997 at the Whitehall Memorial Hospital.
Stanley was born March 7, 1916 in the town of Curran, Jackson County, to Reynardt and Thea (Johnstad) Thurston. He graduated from Taylor High School, attended Winona Teachers College and taught elementary education in various communities. Stanley was inducted into the U.S. Army July 16, 1942, and served as a medical technician until honorably discharged, with a rank of sergeant, Sept. 25, 1944. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #368, Hixton-Taylor.
Music was Stan's life and livelihood during the post-war years. A multi-talented musician, he played piano, violin, and was a premier trumpeter. His father was widely known for his old-time fiddle prowess, and his mother and sister played the piano. His brothers Richard and Robert were drummers, and brother Lloyd "Bud" was proficient on several instruments. As a bandleader, Stan led one of the midwest's more popular dance bands. He joined forces with brother Bud in forming the Gale Taylor Band.
In the early 1950s, Stan and his elderly parents relocated to Torrance, Calif., where he continued his education, earning a degree in engineering. He worked for the state of California until retirement, and cared for his parents through their years. Married at age 70, his wife of three years, Faye, succumbed to cancer in 1989.
Stanley is survived by a loving nieces, Jo Ellen (Mark) Schmitt and Janell Webster; a sister-in-law, Olive Thurston; and many cousins, including bandleader Conrad Johns.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a sister and three brothers.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff in Pigeon Falls, Social Services, the American Legion and the Prock-Beede Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at a later date.
Stanley Thurston, a humble man of integrity, talent, intelligence and wit; all of which reflect his values. May God bless his memory.
James F. Zeisler
SPARTA, Wis. - James F. Zeisler, 56, of 303 W. Wisconsin Street, Sparta, died Monday, January 26, 1998 in his home. He was born on September 25, 1941 in La Crosse to Richard and Mary (Reinhard) Zeisler. He grew up in La Crosse and graduated from Aquinas High School in 1959. James attended the Holy Cross Seminary in La Crosse for four years and then attended two years of seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1965, being discharged in 1969. After the service he worked at the Trane Co. in La Crosse for 20 years. On December 31, 1994, he married the former Jean Allen in Sparta. James worked for Leer Manufacturing in New Lisbon for the past four years. He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife, Jean of Sparta; three children, Catherine (Bryan) Behun of Minneapolis, Minnesota, James Zeisler of Milwaukee and Thomas Zeisler of Milwaukee; a stepson, Laudy (Natalie) Allen of Holmen, Wisconsin; two brothers, Richard P. Zeisler of La Crosse and Michael J. (Rose) Zeisler of Oxford, Wisconsin; two sisters, Anne M. Zeisler of La Crosse and Kathleen J. (Neil) Goldman of Manhattan Beach, Californis; two nieces; and eight nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his aunt, Lucille. Memorial services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, La Crosse, with Father Robert Cook officiating. Burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery, La Crosse.
Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. The Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta, is in charge of arrangements.
Laurence J. Eden
LA CRESCENT, Minn. - Laurence J. Eden, 85, of La Crescent, died on Monday, January 26, 1998, at the La Crescent Health Care Center in La Crescent. He was born on November 1, 1912 in rural La Crescent to Herman and Catherine (Schnedecker) Eden. Laurence married Marlys Darling in La Crescent in 1940. She died in 1977. On September 1, 1979 he married Helen Anderson in La Crescent. Laurence farmed in Pine Creek Valley from boyhood until 1958. He then purchased and operated the Mobil Oil station in La Crescent. He later worked as a driver for Purolater Courier of Minneapolis. He retired in 1974. He was a longtime member of the Church of the Crucifixion in La Crescent, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 5115.
In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by a son, Larry (Donna) Eden of Dearborn, Mich.; a daughter, Janet (Steve) Markwell of Bloomington, Minn.; four grandchildren, Brad and Brian Markwell and Todd and Kim Eden; three step-grandchildren, Marc, Dion and Mike Eden; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Malinda Wieser and Dorothy (Frank) Mader, both of La Crescent, and Theresa Woodruff of Menomonie Falls, Wis.; and a brother, Henry Eden of La Crosse. In addition to his first wife, Marlys, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edward; and a sister, Marie Williams.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 30, 1998, at the Church of the Crucifixion, La Crescent. The Rev. Donald W. Grubisch will officiate. Burial will be in the Pine Creek Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Friday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. A rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Crucifixion Parish School.
