INDEPENDENCE, Wis. - Aloysie B. Halama, 81, of Independence, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998 in Strum Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Independence. Spring burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service and 8 p.m. rosary, and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, both at the Edison Funeral Home, Independence.
Joseph Larson
Joseph Larson, 93, of La Crosse, died on Sunday, January 18, 1998 at the Hillview Health Care Center. He was born on January 7, 1905 in Clermont, Iowa, to Ole and Randi (Nelson) Larson. He had worked at Allis Chalmers for 25 years until its closing, and then worked at the Holiday Inn in La Crosse for 17 years until his retirement in 1987.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Armilla; one son, Joseph D. Larson of La Crosse; two daughters, Patricia (Cletus) Du Charme of Eastman, Wis., and Erma (Gary) Dahlquist of La Crescent, Minn.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 22, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. John Cain will officiate. Burial will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. A rosary will be recited Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
William A. "Bill" Olson
HIXTON, Wis. - William A. "Bill" Olson, 96, of Hixton, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998 in Osseo Area Medical Center Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Northfield Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton; and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

ARCADIA, Wis. - Melvin John Schettler, 94, of Arcadia, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998 in Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today in Christ Lutheran Church, Arcadia. Spring burial will be in Glencoe Lutheran Cemetery, Arcadia. Friends may call from noon until the time of services in the church. Bernice Meistad
ARCADIA, Wis. - Bernice Meistad, 87, of La Crosse, Wis., and formerly of Arcadia, Wis., died Sunday, January 18, 1998 at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home in La Crosse.
She was born October 16, 1910 in the town of Arcadia to Mark and Lena (Erickson) Scow. On September 6, 1932, she married Harry Meistad. He preceded her in death on October 4, 1966.
Bernice was employed for many years at Abts Shoe Store in Arcadia.
She is survived by four daughters, Arlyn (Mike) Anthon of Columbus, Wis., Joyce (Bill) Benusa of Concorde, Calif., Marlys (Gordon) Schultz of Arcadia, Wis., and Karen (Gerald) Gleason of La Crosse, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Myron (Hazel) Scow of Arcadia, Wis.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three brothers, Raymond, Palmer and Maurice.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 22, 1998 at Christ Lutheran Church in Arcadia, with Rev. Arthur Sharot officiating. Spring burial will be at Glencoe Lutheran Cemetery, Arcadia. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
The family of Bernice Meistad respectfully asks that memorials be directed to Christ Lutheran Church or to Franciscan Skemp Hospice.

John F. Maier
John F. Maier, 81, of 713 North 10th St., died at his home on Monday, January 19, 1998.
He was born to Sophie (Pederson) Maier on September 5, 1916 in Milwaukee, Wis. He worked at the Electric Auto Lite plant in La Crosse from 1940 until the plant's closing in 1959. He then worked as a self-employed carpenter until retiring in 1979. John was an avid outdoorsman who especially loved fishing and duck and goose hunting.
He is survived by one daughter, Jean (Kevin) Kronebusch of Minnesota City, Minn.; three sons, Gary (Joyce) Maier of La Crosse, Jeffrey (Betty) Maier of Brice's Prairie and John R. Maier of Eau Claire, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Kelley (Kevin) Dohlby, Troy (Dawn) Maier, Todd (Debi) Kronebusch, Earl Gittens, Jennifer Maier, Nicholas Kronebusch, Chelsea Kronebusch and Christopher Maier; and five great-grandchildren, Kurtis and Katie Dohlby, Seth and Cody Maier and Carstin Gittens. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sophie; and one brother, Joseph.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 23, 1998 at 11 a.m. from St. James the Less Catholic Church. Rev. Martin Mankowski will officiate. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 10 to 10:30 a.m. There will be a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Helen O. (Mrs. Kenneth) Evenstad
WESTBY, Wis. - Helen O. (Mrs. Kenneth) Evenstad, age 76, of RFD 3 Westby, died Wednesday, January 21, 1998, at her home.
She was born on August 20, 1921, in the township of Christiana, Vernon Co., Wis., to Martin and Tina (Lee) Holte. On November 22, 1948, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Evenstad. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Westby and a church circle and WELCA.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; her son, Michael (Connie) Evenstad of Coon Valley; her daughter, Martha (Lenny Lakatos) Evenstad of Westby; four grandchildren, Dustin and Jamey Evenstad of Coon Valley and Tom and Jeanette Lakatos of Westby; three sisters, Lydia Melvin of New Lisbon, Elenora (Hilmar) Christianson of Viroqua and Gladys Hanson of Viroqua.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Nora, Alida, Myrtle, Borghild, Thelma and one sister in infancy; one brother, Alf; and one infant son.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. from Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Westby. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate with burial in the Our Saviors Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy. 14, in Westby; and after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

WEST SALEM, Wis. - Harriette A. Smith, 83, of West Salem, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 11 a.m. from St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, West Salem. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Medford, Wis. There will be no visitation.
