Fay Smith
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Fay Smith, 76, of West Salem, died Thursday, January 15, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born February 15, 1921, in Beetown, Wis. to Oliver and Mellie (Fischer) Smith. On April 11, 1953, he married Pat Obershaw in West Salem. Fay was a Navy veteran of WWII having served three and one-half years aboard a destroyer and later worked in the reconstruction of Okinawa. Fay was a self-employed painter/decorator and after his painting years he kept very busy helping his son, Ken, with his La Crosse businesses, Deliver-Ease for 14 years and Smith's Nite Club for five years. Recently, he has been a two-day a week volunteer at Lutheran Hospital and worked three days a week at Fazoli's. Fay was a member of the West Salem Lions Club and was recently honored for his forty year membership. He was named Lion of the Year 1996-97 and was also Citizen of the Year in 1987. He was a past member of the West Salem Planning Committee.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; a son, Ken (fiancee Raven) of La Crosse; a daughter, Trudy (Steve) Hegge of Eagan, Minn.; and his two most precious grandchildren, Nicholas and Matthew, who were the apple of his eye; two brothers, Clyde of Lancaster, Wis. and Harold (Jan) of Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Lou (Rick) Backenkeller of Janesville, Wis. and Iona Wildman of Cassville, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and one sister.
Funeral services will be Sunday, January 18, at 2 p.m. from Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem. Rev. Michael Hylton will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and also on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
Fay will be most remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. Ken's fiancee said it best, ``Like everything else today, they just don't make them like that anymore.''

Olga C. Parr
WESTBY, Wis. - Olga C. Parr, age 89, of Westby, died Friday, January 16, 1998, at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua. She was born on April 7, 1908, in Minoqua, Wis. to John and Marie (Lovstad) Martinson. On April 7, 1928 she was united in marriage to Hugh ``Tate'' Parr. She was a member of the Dell United Methodist Church and had been an active member of the United Methodist Women of the Church. She had also been a member of the Royal Neighbors for many years.
She is survived by her son Hubert ``Bud'' (Yvonne) Parr of Westby; three daughters, Marie Pervenanze of Buhl, Minn., Shirley Laufenberg of Geneso, Ill. and Nancy Bohland of Stewartville, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Martha Cowan of Stoughton, Ona Thomas of Madison and Swanhild Durst of Kenosha.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1984; one son, Tyrone L. Parr; one sister, Minola Crye; one brother, Ole Martinson; three sons-in-law, Don Laufenberg, Richard Pervenanze and Marion Bohland; and her granddaughter, Kristine Laufenberg.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 19, 1998, at 1 p.m. from Dell United Methodist Church. Pastor Richard Kraemer will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby.

Fritz Nicklaus
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Fritz Nicklaus, age 76, died Sunday, January 11, 1998. He was the beloved husband of Maria (Nee Engl), dearest father of Gerhard and Fred (Kate) Nicklaus, loving grandfather of Kirk and Samantha and fond brother of the late Gerhard. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are Monday, January 19, at 6 p.m. at Bruskiewitz Forest Lane Chapel, 355 W. Forest Home Ave., Milwaukee, Wis. Private interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until time of service. Special thanks to the staff of Hillview Care Center for their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, memorials to The Ranch Community Services or ARC Milwaukee are suggested.

Ada Mae Reichelt
Ada M. Reichelt, 99, formerly of 2126 Prospect Street, died at the Lakeview Health Care Center on Thursday, January 15, 1998. She was born July 12, 1898, in La Crosse to August and Bertha (Trader) Fregin. She married Harold Reichelt on January 22, 1924, in La Crosse, and he preceded her in death on January 4, 1975. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The Reverend Ted Dewald will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service. Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Trust. Dickinson Family Funeral Homes are assisting the family with the arrangements.

Loren A. Porath
WATERLOO, Wis. - Loren A. Porath, age 41, died on Thursday, January 15, 1998, at home.
He was born on November 4, 1956, in La Crosse, the son of Glenn and Joyce (Prellwitz) Porath. He married Dawn Gutheridge on September 6, 1996, in Jefferson.
He worked at Trek Bicycle for eight years.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn of Waterloo; one daughter, Briann White of La Crescent, Minnesota; two step-daughters, Jennifer Wischmann and Cassandra Gutheridge; one step-son, Shaun Wischmann; four brothers, Terry (Joan) of Holmen, John (Maureen) of Onalaska, David (Carol) and Grant (Bernadine), both of La Crosse; his mother-in-law, Isabelle Bentheimer of Jefferson; four nieces and three nephews; many aunts and uncles; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 1998, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth A. Comstock officiating. Burial will be private.
Friends may call at the Olsen Funeral Home in Jefferson from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 1998. Friends may also call at the church on Monday after 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.

Robert W.Loeffler
Robert W. Loeffler, 85, of La Crosse, died on Saturday, January 17, 1998. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Dickinson Family Funeral Homes.

Martin L. Schlegel
Martin L. Schlegel, 78, of La Crosse, died at Hillview Health Care Center, Saturday, January 17, 1998. He was born July 27, 1919, in La Crosse, to Martin and Dorothy (Mueller) Schlegel. He married Colleen Manning and she preceded him in death in 1952. He married Dorthy Doerr on April 10, 1953, at Caledonia, Minn.
He served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during WWII. He retired as an engineer with the Burlington Northern Railroad after forty-five years of employment.
He was a life member of Moose Lodge #1920, a life member of VFW Post 1530 and a member of Eagles Aerie #1254.
In addition to his wife, Dorthy, he is survived by two sisters, Margaret (Melvin) Evans of Marco Island, Fla. and Elizabeth Weiler of Rochester, Minn. In addition to his first wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street. The Reverend Robert Olson, of English Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. A Moose Lodge memorial service will be conducted at 6:45 p.m.

Robert G. Squire
WHITEWATER LAKE, Wis. - Mr. Robert G. Squire, age 57, of Whitewater Lake, died Friday, January 16, 1998, at his residence after a bout with cancer.
He was born February 11, 1940, in Cashton, Wis. to parents Leonard and Magdahlen (Leuck) Squire, graduating from Cashton High School in 1958. He graduated with honors from DeFry Technical School in 1960 (Chicago, Ill.). He worked for ATT as a technician for over 34 years. He married Jeanne Mill on June 25, 1989, and they made their home in Whitewater Lake.
He associated with St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Palmyra.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; three children, Michael of Palmyra, Debra (Joel) Orchard of Palmyra and Susan (Roger) Lilly of Milton; three step-children, Scott (Teri) Mill of Eagle, Tamara (Roy) Lempsa of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Rochelle (Peter) Schroeder of Wales; five grandchildren, Nick, Katie and Jeffrey Orchard and Shelby and Brady Lilly; seven step-grandchildren; sister, Janet (Jim) Stanek of Arlington Heights, Ill.; brother, Terry (Jeanne) Squire of Madison; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services 11 a.m. Monday, January 19, 1998, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 313 W. Main Street in Palmyra with interment Hillside Cemetery in Palmyra. Rev. Charles Peterson officiating. Visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 1998, at church only. Andrews Funeral Home in Palmyra is assisting the family. Memorials appreciated to St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Kenneth R. Fish
Kenneth R. Fish, age 84, of La Crosse, died Thursday, January 15, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center. He was born March 29, 1913, in Viroqua, Wis. to Cliff and Hattie (Cowden) Fish. He graduated from the Foraker Rural School, the Viroqua High School in 1931, and the Vernon County Normal School in 1932. He earned a Bachelor of Education degree from La Crosse State Teachers College in 1948, a Masters of Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1951, and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley in 1958. Dr. Fish was a professor emeritus of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He taught in the elementary education department of the University from 1955, until his retirement in 1978. Dr. Fish began his teaching career in Vernon County rural schools in 1932, where he taught for ten years. He also taught in junior high schools in Onalaska from 1946 to 1947, Beloit 1948 to 1951 and at La Crosse Campus School 1951 to 1955 before joining the faculty of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In 1965 and 1966, he was a program director for Ford Foundation teacher training project in Nigeria, West Africa. A dedicated educator, Dr. Fish continued supervision of UW-L student teachers in over 60 school districts across the state after his retirement. Dr. Fish was a member of numerous education and civic organizations. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Wisconsin Educators' Association, Wisconsin Retired Educators' Association and the National Educational Association. While teaching in Vernon County, he was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Viroqua. He served in the Eighth Air Force Weather Squadron in World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret (Oliver); his son, Revel and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Scholz; his daughter, Ellen; his two grandsons, Sam and Andy; his sister, Lois Schulz of Viroqua; six nephews and nieces; and ten grandnephews and grandnieces. A private family ceremony will be held next week. The date for a memorial service will be announced later. The Blaschke Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Anna E. Lawrynk
Anna E. Lawrynk, age 96, of La Crosse died Sunday, January 17, 1998, at the Bethany St. Joseph Care Center. Funeral services will be announced by the Sletten-McKee-Hanson Funeral Home.
