William H. Wellner
SPARTA, Wis. - William H. Wellner, 80, of Sparta, died early Saturday morning, Aug. 1, 1998 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Tomah.
He is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ann Wellner of Sparta; two sons, Robert Wellner of Sparta, and Michael Wellner of Superior, Wis.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Page-Smith Funeral Home, Sparta, with Rev. Mark Walljasper officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until the service.

Eunice (Buz) Hanson
Eunice (Buz) Hanson, 83, of La Crosse, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 peacefully at her home.
She was born in Kendall, Wis. on July 10, 1915 to Luther and Bertha (Rieck) Buswell. She graduated from Kendall High School and the Wisconsin Business College. She married Harvey Hanson on June 30, 1962 in La Crosse. Harvey died Oct. 11, 1993. Eunice was employed by Metropolitican Insurance Co. before her retirement.
She is survived by her step-daughter, Janice Larkin and her son-in-law, Bill Larkin of La Crosse; two grandchildren, Scott Larkin of Waukesha, Cheryl Castille of Opelousas, La.; two great-grandchildren, Theresa and Sarah Larkin of Waukesha; nieces, Ellen Verwiebe of La Crosse, Gayle Walter of La Crescent; nephews, Randy Buswell of La Crosse, Richard Buswell of La Crescent; many other nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her loyal friend and caretaker Jean Dickey. Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by five sisters, Iona Smith, Irma Rowley, Zillah Smale, Janice Schoenberg, Avon Verwiebe; five brothers, Elton, Byron, Charles, Gerald and Roger Buswell.
Family burial will be in the Kendall Cemetery. There will be no other service. The Woodruff Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

John P. McCain
TREMPEALEAU, Wis. - John P. McCain, 41, of Trempealeau, died on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born in Elgin, Ill. on May 3, 1957 to Clarence P. and Patricia (Mapes) McCain. For the past 10 years he had been employed by Ashley Furniture in Arcadia, Wis.
John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed all sorts of sporting activities, especially hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed working in his vegetable garden.
He is survived by his mother, Pat, of Trempealeau; a son, Benjamin, and his former wife, Kris McCain of Trempealeau; five sisters, Tony (Michael) Atchison of Kennesaw, Ga., and Cheryl (Mark) Hager, Annette (Roger) William, Lorna (Larry) Druschke, and Chris McCain, all of La Crosse; his nieces and nephews, Patrick, Tasha, Christina, Steven Jo, Shannon, Erik, Jeff, Chad, Andy and Nicole; and his twin great niece and nephew, Alissia and Aaron. John was preceded in death by his father on Aug. 4, 1992, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. from the Cathedral of Praise in Onalaska. Pastor Jerry Hatlevig will officiate. Burial will be in the Trempealeau Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.

Donald L. Braun
BELLA VISTA, Ark. - Donald L. Braun, 76, of Bella Vista, Ark. and formerly of La Crosse, died on Friday, July 31, 1998 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 10:30 a.m. from the Marian Chapel of the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dela Leona Nauman
TOMAH, Wis. - Dela Leona Nauman, 86, of Tomah, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, town of Ridgeville. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, Tomah; and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Paulette Marie Johnson
Paulette Marie Johnson, 49, formerly of La Crosse, died on Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, in her home in Ellenwood, Ga. She was born on Aug. 16, 1948, in La Crosse, to Clement and Frances (Levenhagen) Gavin. Paulette was a 1966 graduate of La Crosse Logan High School.
She is survived by her husband, Kurt of Ellenwood, Ga.; two sons, Tom (Tracy) Johnson and their son, Cody, of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Kyle (Jessica) Johnson of Ellenwood, Ga.; her mother and stepfather, Frances and Bill Apfel of La Crosse; four sisters, Karen Langan of La Crosse, Pat (Earl) Schwarthoff of Rochester, Minn., Mary Jane (Dan) La Fleur of La Crosse, and Connie (Tom) Kukowski of Winona, Minn.; one brother, Gery (Faith) Apfel of La Crosse; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and an infant brother, Richard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at 11:30 a.m. at St. James the Less Catholic Church, with Rev. Maryon Jordan officiating. Burial will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Katharine Elizabeth Battison
MADISON, Conn. - Katharine Elizabeth ``Katie'' Battison, 17, of Madison, Conn., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in a traffic accident in Westchester, N.Y.
Katie was born on Aug. 26, 1980, to Christopher and Sara Gundersen Battison in New Haven, Conn. She graduated with honors from Daniel Hand High School, Madison, Conn., on June 16, 1998.
Katie loved animals and had been accepted for admission to Tufts University in Medford, Mass., with plans to pursue veterinary medicine. She expanded her knowledge of animal care this summer during an internship with a Madison-area veterinarian.
Katie was a violinist in her high school orchestra and played on the girls' varsity lacrosse team. She also was a member of Madison Youth Services' Safe Rides corp group, Madison Youth Services' Peer Advocates program and Reach Out.
Katie received a National Merit Scholarship Commendation, a President's Award for Educational Excellence, and a Connecticut Hunter-Jumper Association Scholarship. She also was a 1998 class scholar (one of the top 10 students in her high school class), a member of the National Honor Society for four years and an honors athlete.
An avid equestrian, Katie was on her way to a horse show when she was in the accident that claimed her life. She had won seven state championships in the Connecticut Hunter-Jumper Association and was named the New England Horseman's Council regional champion. She also was the winner of the New England Equitation Committee's First Horsemanship Award.
In addition to her parents, Katie is survived by her maternal grandparents, Dr. Adolf and Virginia Gundersen of La Crosse; her aunt, Penny Battison of Middlebury, Vt.; and an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at First Presbyterian Church, 233 West Ave. S., La Crosse. The Rev. Michael Frandsen and the Rev. Allan Townsend will officiate. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse.
Memorials may be made to Madison Youth Services, 10 School St., Madison, Conn. 06443; or to the charity of your choice.

LeRoy Helmke
WILTON, Wis. - LeRoy Helmke, 79, of Wilton, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, in Tomah Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wilton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Smith-Nelson Funeral Home, Wilton, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church.

Agnes A. Smith
Agnes A. Smith, 89, of La Crosse, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at St. Joseph's Nursing Home. She was born Feb. 18, 1909, in Vernon County to Frank and Josephine (Stanek) Subera. She married Edward Smith at Hillsboro, Wis., on April 23, 1932. He preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1979.
She graduated from Hillsboro High School and attended La Crosse Normal School. She taught school for four years, and after her marriage to Edward, worked for the F.W. Woolworth Company for several years. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by a sister, Josephine (Jim) Hora of Hillsboro, and by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, her parents, two sisters and a brother preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street. The Reverend Dr. Larry Moody, of Asbury United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to Asbury United Methodist Church.
