Leona T. Blade
Leona T. Blade, 92, of La Crosse, died on Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Franc. She was born March 18, 1906, at Hanover, Ill., to Fred and Emma (Alitz) Meili. She married Orville Blade on Oct. 5, 1932, at Cochrane, Wis. He preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1985.
Leona graduated from Cochrane High School and the La Crosse Normal School. She taught for several years and then was employed by Sears Roebuck and Co. for 30 years, and then by Rivoli Jewelers until her retirement.
She had been a member of English Lutheran Church and of Martha Circle for many years.
She is survived by her son, Darle (Shirley) Blade of Golden Valley, Minn.; by five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and by a brother.
Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at English Lutheran Church. The Reverend Bob Oleson will officiate. Burial will be in Buffalo City Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the service.

Evelyn M. Anderson
BANGOR, Wis. - Evelyn M. Anderson, 85, formerly of Bangor, died Tuesday, August 4, 1998 in the Bethany St. Joseph's Nursing Home in La Crosse, where she was a resident. She was born April 24, 1913 in Bangor, to Fritz and Mary (Kolarik) Schroeder. She graduated from Bangor High School in 1931, and attended La Crosse Teacher's College, graduating in 1937. She taught schools in Richland Center and the Beloit area. She married Julian Anderson on May 27, 1944 in La Crosse, and he preceded her in death. The couple formerly owned and operated John's Diner on 11th and Market Streets in La Crosse, until their retirement in 1977.
She is survived by one son, Tim (Vicki) Anderson of Auburndale, Wis; two grandsons, Scott of Green Bay, Wis., and Jay of Auburndale, Wis.; two granddaughters, Jill Bantley of River Falls, Wis., and Kelly of Auburndale, Wisconsin; Three great-grandchildren, Tyler Bantley, and Haley and Trevor Anderson; two sisters, a very special sister, Angeline Storandt of La Crosse, and Dorothy Emigh of Wauwatosa, Wis., and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Marie and Betty, and three brothers, John, Fred, and Wenzel.
Funeral Mass for Evelyn, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, 1998 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bangor. Father Bob Hegenbarth and Father Tom Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the Burns Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday, from 9:00 till time of services. The Fossum Funeral Home in Bangor is assisting the family with arrangements.
Janet I. Melvin
LA FARGE/MADISON, Wis. - Janet I. Melvin, 67, of La Farge and formerly of Madison, died Wednesday Aug. 5, 1998, in Sunny Hill Health Care Center, Madison. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in West Arbor Free Methodist Church, and burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, both in Madison. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Seland Funeral Home, La Farge, where there will be an 8 p.m. prayer service; and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Saturday in the church, in Madison.
Lester F. Hubbard
Prairie Du Chien, Wis. - Lester F. Hubbard, 96, of Prairie Du Chien, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998 in Prairie Du Chien Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. in St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie Du Chien. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the Garrity Funeral Home, Prairie Du Chien, where there will be a 4:15 p.m. rosary and an 8 p.m. wake scripture.
Clarence A. Popp
KENDALL, Wis. - Clarence A. Popp, 80, of Kendall, Wis., died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at his home. He was born Jan. 28, 1918, to Herman and Bertha (Bartels) Popp. He was united in marriage to Genevieve E. McHenry on Sept. 6, 1941, at Kendall.
They farmed in the town of Glendale until 1973 when they moved to Kendall. Clarence worked for Fort McCoy from 1963 to 1983, where he was employed as an electrician. Clarence was a lifelong member at St. John's Lutheran Church and past president of the church council.
He is survived by his daughter Shirley (Mel) Schuler of Vienna, Va.; two sons, Conrad (a special friend, Margo) of Janesville, Wis., Richard (Debbie) of Kendall; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Reinhart (Florence) of Tomah; nieces; nephew; and other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve; his parents; three brothers, Raymond, Benford and Frank; and one sister, Raynetta Thompson.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kendall. Reverend Fred Fedke will officiate. Burial will be at the South Ridge Lutheran Cemetery, in the town of Wellington.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Smith Nelson Funeral Home in Kendall. Prayer services will be held at 8 p.m. Relatives and friends may also call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. unitl the time of the services.
Anna C. Johnson
HOLMEN, Wis. - Anna C. Johnson, 85, died at the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998. She was born Nov. 29, 1912, in Holmen, to Edwin and Signe (Pederson) Hendrickson. She married Henry M. Johnson on May 2, 1936, in Holmen, and he preceded her in death on June 16, 1980.
She is survived by a son, David (Sharon) Johnson of Maquoketa, Iowa; two grandchildren, Gregory (Deanna) Johnson of Nora Springs, Iowa and Sheryl (Michael) Hayes of Chandler, Ariz.; three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Drew and Brandon.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Signe; one sister; and three brothers.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Holmen Lutheran Church. The Reverend Charles Evavold will officiate and burial will be in the Lewis Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen, on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Holmen Lutheran Church.
Leone E. Dahlquist-Olson
Leone E. Dahlquist-Olson, 85, of La Crosse, died on Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at the St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with chronic illness. She was born in La Crosse on June 27, 1913, to Thomas and Anna (Doane) Burns. She married Ernest Dahlquist on Feb. 28, 1933. He preceded her in death on July 15, 1968. She married Victor Olson on Jan. 5, 1974, and he also preceded her in death. Leone had owned and operated Le Ette's Bakery in La Crosse for many years and then had worked in dietary at St. Francis Hospital.
She is survived by three daughters, Rosemary Tooke of La Crosse, Bonnie (Fred) Bahr of Galesville, Wis. and Diane (Allan) Brague of Winona, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Walter Dahlquist of La Crescent; a sister-in-law, Margie Jensen of La Crescent; and many special nieces and nephews. In addition to her first and second husbands she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Barbara Papenfuss; a grandson, Eddie Brague; three sisters, Charlotte ``Lottie'' Farrell, Rose Beuhler and Eva Dahlquist and a brother, Wilbur Burns.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Crucifixion, La Crescent with Msgr. Donald W. Grubisch officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is in charge of arrangements.

Donald F. Bellis
BOSCOBEL, Wis./ALTOONA, Wis. - Donald F. Bellis, 48, of Altoona, formerly of Boscobel, passed away on Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire after a sudden illness. He was born on June 3, 1950. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Thoni-Kendall Funeral Home, Boscobel. Burial in the Little Grant Union Cemetery, rural Lancaster. Friends may call on Monday at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
Leslie F. "Billy" Swartz, Sr.
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Leslie F. "Billy" Swartz, Sr., 83, of West Salem, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born March 8, 1915, in La Crosse to Bert and Minnie (Maack) Swartz. On June 16, 1937, he married Vernice Herman in Burr Oak. Leslie farmed for over 32 years in the Bells Coulee area and then he and his wife retired to West Salem. He was a member of Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in Burr Oak and a member of the La Crosse County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Vernice; a daughter, Donna Johnson of Holmen; a daughter-in-law, Donna Swartz of Sparta; eight grandchildren, Robin (Carrie) Johnson and Marla (Kevin) Nesseth, both of Holmen, Pamela Johnson of New Berlin, Wis., Rhonda (Greg) Britton and Randall (Lisa) Johnson, both of Holmen, Terry (Anke) Swartz of Bangor, Tim (Rebecca) Swartz and Travis Swartz, both of Sparta; ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola Strand of Trempealeau, Wis.; and a brother, Harold "Dick" (Jean) Swartz of La Crosse. He was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Swartz, Jr.; a daughter, Marilyn; a son-in-law, Roger Johnson; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 10, at 1:30 p.m. from Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, Burr Oak. Pastor Paul N. Schossow will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, on Sunday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. with a prayer service at 4:30 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers.
