Barbara J. West
Barbara J. West, 65, of La Crosse, died Saturday, July 25, 1998 at Bethany St. Joseph Health Care Center.
She was born in La Crosse on June 4, 1933 to Lawrence and Verna (Spears) Topel. She was a cook and waitress before her retirement.
She is survived by her mother, Verna Topel of La Crosse; two sisters, Violet (John) Rediske of La Crosse, Marilyn (William) Hollis of La Crosse; six brothers, Harold (Darlyene) of Stoddard, Kenneth (Mary) of Bangor, Maine, Phillip (Rita) of Lewiston, Maine, Fredrick (Pat) of Midwest City, Okla.; Robert (Lynn) of Blea Raton, Fla., Alan (Dawn) of Onalaska; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father, Lawrence, who died April 18, 1984, husband, Henry Bud West, and one sister, Rita Kaiser.
A private family funeral service will be held Monday at the Woodruff Family Funeral Home. The Rev. Duane Kamrath of St. Paul's Lutheran Church will officiate and burial will be in the Middle Coon Valley Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Dave Woodruff is assisting the family with arrangements.

Rita L. McCabe Branham
MABEL, Minn. - Rita L. McCabe Branham, 60, of rural Mabel, Minn. died Friday, July 24, 1998 at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. following a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock, Iowa. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Mengis Funeral Home, Mabel; and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Donna S. Forde
VIROQUA, Wis./RICHFIELD, Minn. - Donna S. Forde, age 65, of Richfield, Minn., wife of the former Rev. Kermit Forde of Viroqua, died Friday, July 24, 1998 in St. Paul, Minn.
She was born Jan. 18, 1933 in Helena, Mont. to William and Clara (Minde) Coleman. As a child she lived in Montana and Idaho. She married Kermit Forde on June 29, 1952. Together they served churches in Montana, Idaho, Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota. After Kermit's retirement they moved to Minnesota. Donna graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Human Services and worked in the health industry for a number of years. She also volunteered many hours of her time to the American Red Cross and local schools as a tutor.
Donna was preceded in death by her loving husband, Rev. Kermit; a daughter, Ingrid Rokke; and her parents.
She is survived by two daughters, Jennifer (Keith) Olson of McLaughlin, S.D., and Valerie (James) Kaskie of Mesa, Ariz.; former son-in-law, Jerome (Jean) Rokke of Minneapolis; her step-mother, Clara Coleman of Sister Bay, Wis.; granddaughters, Jessica, Candice, Kirsten, Kari, Kimberly and Stephanie; special grandsons, David and Jimmy; two sisters-in-law, Gladys (Leslie) Nash, Luther (Ilene) Forde of Plymouth, Minn.; one aunt, Zella Ramlo of Kalispell, Mont.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at 11 a.m. in Southwest Prairie Lutheran Church. The Rev. Helen Johnson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday after 10 a.m. Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is assisting the family. Memorials may be given to Southwest Prairie Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.

Mabel E. Randall
SPARTA, Wis. - Mabel E. Randall, 91, of 310 W. Main St., Sparta, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home, Sparta.
She was born on April 30, 1907, in Leon, Wis., to Christ and Carrie (Oleson) Olson. She grew up on Fish Creek Ridge and married Jean O. Randall on Sept. 17, 1926. After marriage, they lived in Sparta all of their married lives. Jean passed away on Sept. 11, 1981. She became a resident of Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home in January of 1996.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Ruland) Heser, Donna (Warren) Kastberg, Carol (Roger) Thorsen, all of Sparta; two sons, Carlyle (Marie) Randall of Sparta, Gerald (Beverly) Randall of Glastonbury, Conn.; six grandsons, Greg Heser, Richy Thorsen, Scott Randall, Bruce Randall, Jeff Randall, Mark Randall; eight granddaughters, Sherry Heser, Shelley Nichols, Lori Ferries, Tracy Buccelli, Julie Hogan, Hollie Peth, Susan Harbert, Robin Purcell, and 26 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Rev. Cindy Arndt officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
Friends may call at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta, on Tuesday, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Betty M. Mills
VIROQUA, Wis. - Betty M. Mills, 69, of Rt. 1, Viroqua, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. She was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Clayton Township, Crawford County, to Hans and Mary (Natwick) Hoffland. She was united in marriage to Charles Mills on Dec. 3, 1947, in Winona, Minn. They lived in the city of Viroqua for a short time before starting a farm at rural Viroqua. In 1962, they moved to their present farm on Nottingham Ridge. They belonged to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua where Betty was a member of the Priscilla Circle.
She is survived by her husband, Charles of Viroqua; one daughter, Cathryn Mills of Long Beach, Calif.; three sons, David (Janet) Mills of DeForest, Jeffrey (Brenda) Mills of Viroqua, and Christopher (RoxiAnne) Mills of Mauston; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Freda (Richard) Gorman of Viroqua, and Doris Iannitelli of Greenville, R.I.; four brothers, Marcus (Muriel) Hoffland of Mesa, Ariz.; Howard (Merle) Hoffland of Soldiers Grove, Robert Hoffland of Madison, and Donald Hoffland of Mesa, Ariz.
Betty was preceded in death by one son, Daniel; her parents, two brothers, George and Robert Hoffland; and two sisters, Grace Gorman and Ruth Oliver.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at 11 a.m. in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Viroqua. The Rev. Stephanie Steiner will officiate with burial in Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and also at the church on Wednesday after 10 a.m. Memorials may be given to the Vernon Memorial Hospital Hospice Program.

Gary Allen Rogness
Gary Allen Rogness, 54, of La Crosse, died on Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born on Feb. 26, 1944, in Black River Falls, Wis., the only child of Gaylord and Verna (Brown) Rogness. Gary was united in marriage to Janice Udulutch on Sept. 4, 1971, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in La Crosse. They made their home in the Viroqua, Wis., area for the first 10 years of their marriage and Gary was a sales representative for Nabisco Inc. In 1981, they moved to La Crosse and he established Gary Rogness Inc. At the time of his death, he was also employed by Kent Investments of Seattle, Wash., as a regional sales manager.
Gary had an entrepreneurial spirit and was involved in many endeavors throughout his life. He was an avid reader and had a great sense of humor. Gary enjoyed classical music and simple things, like exploring the rustic backroads of Vernon County. He was a loving husband and will always be missed.
In addition to his wife, Janice, he is survived by four sisters-in-law, Ruth Senn, Carol Udulutch, Ellen (Brad) Filzen and Mary (Gerald) Guentner, all of La Crosse; two brothers-in-law, Charles (Eleanor) Udulutch of Oshkosh, Wis., and William (Suzanne) Udulutch of Onalaska, Wis.; his godson, Jaren Knutson of La Crosse; several aunts and uncles; a large number of nieces and nephews and many lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-father, Lloyd LaMere.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.
``Goodnight my sweet Gary. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.''

Mrs. Anne E. Burr
MADISON, Wis. - Mrs. Anne E. Burr, formerly, Anne E. Peppard, 82, died on Thursday morning, July 30, 1998, at Hebron-Oakwood Lutheran Home, Madison, Wis. She was born on April 8, 1916, in Solen, N.D.; the fourth of five children born to Frank and Genoveve Wetsch.
She grew up in the loving companionship of her family that included deceased brothers: Art Wetsch of Washington; Julius Wetsch of Onalaska, Wis. and Lucas Wetsch of South Dakota.
She is survived by her younger sister, Emma Sauer of La Crosse, Wis. and by her three children, Terry Peppard of Madison, Wis.; Foster Peppard of Appleton, Wis. and Georgia Alcorn of Loveland, Colo. She is also survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Anne attended college in Mount Angel, Ore. She was a fine horsewoman, who transported her students to the one-room schoolhouse in which she taught in North Dakota. She was a beauty shop owner/operator for a brief period of time. She attended nursing school in North Dakota and worked at the state hospital in Jamestown and later at the old Grandview Hospital in La Crosse. She was in charge of tools at an installation for repair of aircraft in Ohio during WWII. She was married to Leon F. (Pep) Peppard for 27 years. Together, they owned and operated two different businesses in La Crosse and Onalaska. During this same period of time, Anne was in charge of the lunch programs for St. James School, then St. James and St. John's and then, St. Michael's, for a total of 25 years.
After her first husband died, she remained in Onalaska. During this time she completed an AD in Food Service Management from the then WWTI. She also met and married Edwin (Sarge) Burr. They continued to reside in Onalaska until his death. Shortly thereafter she moved to Madison, Wis., to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will take place at St. Patrick's Church, Main St., Onalaska, Wis., on Aug. 7, 1998, at 11 a.m.; Father Bill Matzek officiating. Interment will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Noel L. Gander
BOSCOBEL/GAYS MILLS, Wis. - Noel L. Gander, 90, of Boscobel and formerly of Gays Mills, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at the Memorial Nursing Home, Boscobel. He was born May 28, 1908. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dommersnaes-Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills. Burial will follow in the North Clayton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from noon until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to be used as the family wishes.
