Thorwald E. Solverson
CROSS PLAINS, Wis. - Thorwald E. Solverson, age 65, of Cross Plains, died on Sunday, August 24, 1997 of an apparent heart attack. He was born on January 25, 1932 in Viroqua, Wisconsin, the son of Thorwald P. and Edna (Sherry) Solverson.
He was a mechanical engineer for 30 years with Oscar Mayer, retiring in 1990. Thorwald married the former Shirley Pederson on December 20, 1951 in La Crosse Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1959 with a B.S. in engineering.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; three children, Thorwald Peder (Cindy) Solverson of Lake Zurich, Illinois, Daniel Phillip (Vickie) Solverson of Phoenix, Arizona, and Tracy Ann Solverson of Raleigh, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Thor, Johanna, Erik, Danielle, Michael, Patrick and Anthony; a brother, Samuel (Elizabeth) Solverson of La Crosse, Wisconsin; a sister, Anna Solverson of La Crosse, Wisconsin; a brother-in-law, Mervin (Dorothy) Pederson of La Farge, Wisconsin; and a niece, Lynette Dobbins of La Farge, Wisconsin.
Funeral services were held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Middleton, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997.
Roger A. Pfaff
SPARTA, Wis. - Roger A. Pfaff, 77, of 613 Pfaff Parkway, Sparta, died Thursday, September 4, 1997 at home. He was born on March 7, 1920 in Burr Oak, Wis. to Roy F. and Florence M. (Wadel) Pfaff.
He married Jane C. Meyer on June 17, 1941 at the Burr Oak Parsonage. They lived their entire married life in Sparta. Roger hauled mild and then worked for a beer distributor, F.W. Grenison (Beanie) until 1954. He owned and operated the Sportsman Bar in Sparta for 12 years. Then he built the R.J. Bar (now Club 16) and owned it until 1968 when he sold it. He then drove truck for Arthur Overgaard until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement he developed Pfaff subdivision.
Roger was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Sparta.
He is survived by his wife, Jane of Sparta; five children, James (Marcia) Pfaff, Linda Pfaff, Terry (Beatrice) Pfaff, Randy (Mary Jo) Pfaff, and Julie (Jeffrey) Voter all of Sparta; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Myron (Alice) Pfaff of Bangor, LeRoy Pfaff of Sparta; a sister, Elizabeth (Wilfred) Schroeder of Sparta.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Sparta with Reverend Del Begalka officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
Friends may call at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta on Sunday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
Sarah C. Sullivan
Sarah C. Sullivan, age 85, of La Crosse, passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 1997, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse.
She was born Sept. 27, 1911, in Fairville, Iowa, to Esedore and Mary (Goshey) Gappa. She married Patrick Sullivan April 27, 1943, at St. James Catholic Church in La Crosse. She and Patrick were active members of the Shamrock Club. They enjoyed dancing, traveling and spending time individually and collectively with their family.
She is survived by six sons, Patrick (Karen) of Traverse City, Michigan, Paul (Jeanne) of Onalaska, Wis., Peter (Sharon) of Winter Springs, Fla., Thomas (Barbara) La Crosse, Wis., Eugene (Charlotte) of Valrico, Fla., and Michael (Kathy) of Winter Park, Fla.; seventeen grandchildren, Lori, Kelley, Jackie, Michelle, Patrick, Thomas, Paul, Matthew, Nathaniel, Camie, Craig, Michael, Katie, Erin, John, Joseph and Mark; also 13 great-grandchildren; and further survived by one brother, Frank Gappa, La Crosse; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Patrick on December 25, 1990.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Sept. 8, 1997, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph Rafacz will officiate with entombment in the Garden of Peace Mausoleum in the Mormon Coulee Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Blaschke Funeral Home, 401 West Ave. S. on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary to be held at 8 p.m. Friends may also call at the funeral home on Monday from 10 a.m. until departing for church.

Marian Gardner Hamilton
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Marian Gardner Hamilton of San Diego, Calif., died Saturday, July 5, 1997.
Marian was born in Manchester, England, on March 27, 1918, and grew up in Wrexham, north Wales. During World War II, she trained as a nurse at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. A lifelong writer, musician and animal lover, Mrs. Hamilton had been a resident of the U.S. since 1946, and San Diego since 1955.
For several years, she wrote human interest stories for the La Crosse (Wis.) Tribune, and also composed numerous short stories. Most recently, she was planning to write about the lives of the people in small Welsh villages.
An accomplished violin player, she performed with the La Crosse Symphony, the Iowa State University Orchestra, and several groups in San Diego.
She was always concerned about animal cruelty, and founded the San Diego branch of Mercy Crusade. She was instrumental in the passage of several legislative measures. No stray animal that presented itself on her doorstep ever left hungry and no injury ever went untreated.
Mrs. Hamilton was active in the Houses of Pacific Relations, and a member of the Houses of England, Wales and Sweden.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest; and son, Kenneth, both of San Diego, Calif.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 11, 1997, in San Diego.
Hilda Solberg
ARCADIA, Wis. - Hilda Solberg, 85, of Arcadia, Wis., died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at the Grandview Nursing Home in Blair, Wis. Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, will be assisting the family with arrangements.
Helen J. Surdick
Helen J. Surdick, 75, of La Crosse, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, in her home.
She was born Aug. 31, 1922, in La Crosse, to John and Julia (Petzel) Miehl. Helen married Joseph J. Surdick on Oct. 27, 1951, at St. John's Catholic Church in La Crosse. Joe preceded her in death on July 5, 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan (John) Blanchar; and a son, Joseph S. (Julia) Surdick; grandchildren, Steve, Julia and Katrina Blanchar and Joanna Surdick; a sister and brother-in-law, Veronica (Sherman) Stellpflug; a brother, George (June) Miehl; a sister-in-law, Margaret E. Erickson; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, John.
Services will be held on Friday, July 17, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 S. 13th St. Reverend Larry Berger will officiate. A private family burial will follow.
Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials are requested to Holy Trinity School or of your choice.
