Mabel H. Gilberg
HOLMEN, Wis. - Mabel H. Gilberg, 94, of Holmen, Wisconsin, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, February 13, 1998, at the St. Francis Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born December 16, 1903, in French Creek, Rural Ettrick, to Olaf and Jennie (Halverson) Hough. She married Arthur I. Gilberg, on October 31, 1925, in La Crosse, and he preceded her in death in 1992. Mabel, was a lifelong member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in La Crosse. She was active with several Ladies organizations, and was a member of the choir. She was a talented soloist and lefse maker. Mabel, was a charter member of the Sons of Norway, and was very active with the Holmen Nutrition Center.
She is survived by two sons, Richard (Patricia) Gilberg of Spooner, Wisconsin and Roger (JoAnn) Gilberg of Holmen; eight grandchildren, Barbara Schieffer, Debora Thompson, Rick, Dan and Dave Gilberg, Evie Olson, Joan Hauser and Lisa Gilberg; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harold and one sister, Myrtle, and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 1998, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Rev. Merill Herder will officiate. Burial will be in the Long Coulee Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. till time of services. Memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church. The Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska is assisting the family with arrangements.
We had a very special mother and grandmother. Just think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched... for nothing loved is ever lost... and she was loved so much.
Mary L. Kreger
Mary L. Kreger, 90, of 2516 Hoeschler Drive, La Crosse, died in her home of Thursday, February 12, 1998. She was born December 2, 1907, in Waukon, Iowa to Charles and Louise Kreger.
She is survived by one sister, Emma (Frank) Bennington of La Crosse; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and four brothers.
Memorial services will be held at the Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date. The Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska is assisting the family with arrangements.
Albert G. Dach
VIROQUA, Wis. - Albert G. Dach, age 67, of Route #1, Box 42A, Viroqua died on Thursday evening, February 12, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born on December 20, 1930, in the Town of Franklin, rural Viroqua to William and Pearl (Craw) Dach. He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1949. On July 24, 1957, he married Patricia Weber Ames. They farmed on the family farm on Dach Ridge, rural Viroqua for over forty years. Albert enjoyed fishing and hunting, but his love for his family was primary. He was a member of the Viroqua United Methodist Church, Viroqua Eagles Aerie No. 2707 and a social member of VFW Post No. 3032. He will be remembered as a friendly, tender hearted man who was very caring in his family and his relationship with his many friends. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; four children, Hazel (Luther) Hendrickson, Diana (Richard) Stalsberg, Kathy Ames and her special friend, Steven Sherry and Steven (Meredith) Ames, all of Viroqua. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Heidi, Jacob and Caleb Hendrickson, Tim and Dan Ames, Chad Erickson and a special friend, Becky Graham, Jason Erickson, Scott Stalsberg; one great-granddaughter, Rachel Erickson; one sister, Mary Stokke; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Dach.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua with Pastor Frank Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Liberty Pole Cemetery, rural Viroqua.
Friends may call from noon until time of service on today. The family requests memorials to either the Viroqua United Methodist Church or charity of the donor's choice.
Dewain Hansen
VIROQUA, Wis. - Dewain Hansen, age 61, of 128 East Maple Street, owner/operator of Hansen's Pastries in Viroqua died Saturday morning at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He had fallen down his basement steps shortly after noon on Friday. Funeral services are tentatively set for Tuesday afternoon. Complete arrangements to be announced by Thorson Funeral Home of Viroqua.
Fred A. Yarolimek
DRESSER, Wis. - Fred A. Yarolimek, 51, of Dresser, died peacefully in his home at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 1998, ending his battle with pancreatic cancer. Fred was born July 13, 1946 to Fred and Rose Yarolimek of Dresbach, Minn. He graduated from Logan High School in La Crosse in 1964, where he was the vice-president of his senior class and active in sports and many other extra-curriculars.
Fred graduated from Winona State University in 1968 with a bachelors degree in Education. He taught at Galesville Elementary School in Galesville, Wis., for hour years.
He earned his masters degree in Administration from Winona State in 1972. His career as an elementary principal began in Cashton, Wis. He was middle school principal and director of elementary education for the Dodgeland School District in Juneau, Wis., from 1979 to 1990. From there he moved to Mishicot, Wis., from 1990 to 1992. After the 1992 school year, he moved to St. Croix Falls, and was the elementary principal until he retired in July of 1997 for health reasons.
``Mr. Y.'', as he was known to children, was very devoted to all the students he has had over the 30 years he was involved in education. He especially enjoyed taking the students camping, a program he developed in his schools to give children an understanding and appreciation for the world around them.
Fred was a 25-year member of the Lions Club. He served as president of the Cashton Lions and held a variety of offices in other chapters. He was also a 25-year member of AWSA (Association of Wisconsin School Administrators). His hobbies included hunting, fishing, golf, playing cribbage and ``telling stories.''
Fred is survived by his wife, Sandra (Lash); three sons, Eric of Des Moines, Iowa, Troy of Oshkosh and Christopher, still living at home; two sisters, Jan Wall of Cashton and Roxy (Darwin) Anderson of Lancaster, Wis.; two brothers, Dean (Marianne) Yarolimek of St. Charles, Mo., and Ron Yarolimek of Hayward, Calif.; a half brother, Larry Schiedigger of Crystal, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Fred will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his zest for life and his dedication to community projects.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the St. Croix Falls High School scholarship fund; Lions International; or St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Osceola, Wis.
Visitation was held Sunday, Feb. 15 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the funeral was Monday, Feb. 16. Fred will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery, along the banks of the Mississippi River, in Dakota, Minn., today.
Dorothy G. Sagen
Dorothy G. Sagen, 81, formerly of 1908 Kane Street, died at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Center in Onalaska on Sunday, February 15, 1998. She was born April 9, 1916 in La Crosse, to Porter and Geneva (Jorgensen) Wheeler. She married Leonard P. Sagen on December 5, 1936 and had been married for 59 years at the time of Leonard's death on December 8, 1995.
She had been employed at the Auto-Lite prior to its closing, and then as a clerk at Barron's and Herberger's Department Store. Dorothy was an active member of Northside TOPS-Wisconsin 725 for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Ann (Paul) Johnson of Onalaska; by a son, L. John (Kay) Sagen of Onalaska; by a sister, Edythe (Russell) Kroner of La Crosse; two brothers, Porter (Marion) Wheeler Jr. of Onalaska and John, a resident of Rolling Hills Nursing Home at Sparta, and formerly of La Crosse; and by four grandchildren, John Bernt Sagen of Redlands, Calif., and Shayn Elizabeth Johnson, Eric Paul Johnson and Heidi Louise Johnson, all of Onalaska.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kristian Marie Sagen.
``She will always be remembered for her kind ways and the cheerful attitude she had toward all of life. She truly enjoyed people and extended herself to them with kindness. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.''
The Mass of Christian Burial will be today at 11:30 a.m. at St. James the Less Catholic Church. The Reverend Roger Scheckel will officiate. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may call at the church today from 10:30 a.m. until the service.
Memorials may be given to St. James the Less Catholic Church or to the charity of your choice. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette Street, is assisting with the arrangements.
Albert G. Hundt
ONALASKA, Wis. - Albert G. Hundt, 80, of Onalaska, died on Monday, February 16, 1998 at the Bethany St. Joseph Care Center. He was born on January 25, 1918 in Middleridge, Wis., to Arthur and Anna (Wuensch) Hundt. Albert married Eileen Everson on February 20, 1943 in Lawton, Okla. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, having served in the European Theater from 1941 to 1945. Albert had worked at La Crosse Breweries until its closing and the Crane Company in La Crosse for many years. He was a member of the Thomas Rooney VFW Post 1530, La Crosse; the American Ex-POWs; and the Coulee Region Chapter of POWs.
Albert is survived by his wife, Eileen; three sisters, Esther (Sy) Enstoss of Ventura, Calif., Annabelle Hughes of Winona, Minn., and Edith Everson of Tomah, Wis.; two brothers, Arthur (Celia) Hundt of La Crosse and Edward (Germaine) Hundt of Green Bay, Wis.; three sisters-in-law, Katherine Hundt of West Salem, Wis., Rosella (Gerald) Kammel of La Crosse and Irene Hundt of La Crosse; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Leo, Wilfred and Howard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 19, 1998 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Onalaska. The Rev. Edward Thome will officiate. Entombment, with military rites by the Thomas Rooney VFW Post 1530, will be in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of Onalaska on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will also be recited.
Jennifer Rae Schaper
INMAN, S.C. - Jennifer Rae Schaper, 19, of 117 Bentwood Drive, Inman, died Saturday, February 14, 1998 in Greene County, Ohio. A native of Oshkosh, Wis., she was the daughter of Dean A. and Rae Shaurette Schaper of the home. She was a 1997 honor graduate of Spartanburg Day School and was presently a student at the University of Cincinnati, majoring in graphic arts, where she was a member of the Honors Class. She was a member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.
Survivors also include two sisters, Angela Schaper and Jessica Schaper; paternal grandmother Dorothy Schaper of La Crosse; and maternal grandmother Irene Shaurette of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 1998 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Spartanburg, S.C.
