Walter Armstrong
Walter Valentine Armstrong, 76, of Cumberland died Dec. 24 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.
Mr. Armstrong was born Dec. 13, 1921 in Norwich, Conn., to Walter and Anna (Luppert) Armstrong. On Oct. 2, 1944 he married Elsie Denson there. Mr. Armstrong served in the Army during WW II, where he received the EAME Theatre ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the American Theatre ribbon, and the Good Conduct/Victory Medal.
He had been a resident of Cumberland since 1977, where he enjoyed woodworking as a part-time business, rose gardening, and cooking East Coast seafood dishes.
Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife, Elsie; one son, Gary of Rice Lake; one daughter, Anna Richey of Cumberland; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn Armstrong of New Britain, Conn., and Marjorie Hutchinson of Norwich; two brothers, Larry Armstrong of Norwich and Richard Armstrong of Renton, Wash.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Mattie Armstrong,.

James Bates
James R. Bates, 82, of Barron died Jan. 9 at Barron Medical Center-Extended Care Unit there.
Mr. Bates was born March 4, 1915 in Mason City, Iowa, to Harry and Lelia (Bolen) Bates. He grew up in St. Louis Park, Minn.,and was stationed with the Army in Mexia, Texas, during WW II. On Jan. 26, 1943 he married Edna Place in Minneapolis. They moved to Barron in 1946, where they owned and operated Barron Signs Advertising until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Bates was a member of the Barron American Legion.
Mr. Bates is survived by three sons, Don, Jerry and Bill, all of Barron; a daughter, Virginia Klingelhoets of Barron; a brother, Richard of Vero Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, on Feb. 3, 1981 and by a great-granddaughter.

Dorothy Beranek
Dorothy Beranek, 64, of Rice Lake died Jan. 10 at the Lakeview Medical Center.
Mrs. Beranek was born Aug. 12, 1933 at Spooner to Nicolai and Elizabeth (Johnson) Nelson. She graduated from Spooner High School in 1950, attended Barron County Normal School in Rice Lake and married Robert Beranek on Dec. 1, 1951. Mrs. Beranek was a homemaker and had worked as a teacher's aide in Rice Lake elementary schools for 14 years.
Mrs. Beranek is survived by her husband, Robert; two daughters, Jan Skaw of Rice Lake and Gayle Huseth of Cameron; two sons, Bruce of Colordo Springs, Colo. and Keven of Eau Claire; six grandchildren; a sister, Inez Elliott of Sarona; and two brothers, Marven of Earl and Marbry of Sellersburg, Ind. She was preceded in death by a grandson

Neil Doty
Neil Doty, 66, a former resident of Birchwood, died Dec. 29 in Roselle, Ill.
Mr. Doty was born in Rice Lake on Sept. 19, 1931. He graduated from Union Free High School and served in the Marine Corps from 1949 to 1951. Mr. Doty worked as a seaman on the Great Lakes for the Pittsburgh Steamship Co. from 1955 to 1982 and as a custodian at Dupage College in West Chicago until 1993. He married Helen Kelsey there in February 1971.
He is survived by his father, James of Hilltop Rest Home in Rice Lake; three brothers, Carroll of Belle Center, Ohio, Ernest of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Calvin, a missionary in the Philippines.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1987.

Clara Billings
Clara Billings, 93, of Rice Lake died Jan. 3 at the Rice Lake Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Billings was born Aug. 7, 1904 in Kennan to August and Amelia Parpart. She graduated from the Kennan High School, attended Kennan County Normal School, and then taught school for many years. She married John Billings on Aug. 14, 1926 in Kennan and they lived in Camp Douglas for many years. After her husband's death, she moved to Minnesota and worked for the University of Minnesota food service for several years. She had been a resident of Rice Lake since 1969.
Mrs. Billings is survived by five daughters, Gladys Hansen of Valders, Marian Fett of Seward, Neb., Lorraine McCann of Bloomer, Joan Frohmader of Cameron, and Shirley Bottke of Rice Lake; a son, Harold Billings of Bozeman, Mont.; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Cull of Pewaukee. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1961; a son, John; and a grandson, Jeff Billings.

Barbara Boortz
Barbara Jean Boortz, 58, of Superior died Jan. 9 at her home.
Mrs. Boortz was born on July 13, 1939 in Superior to Raymond and Jean Rink. She graduated from Central High School in Superior, was a cook at the Androy Hotel, and had been a member of the cribbage league in Duluth. Mrs. Boortz, an avid Packer fan, had been a lifelong resident of Superior
She is survived by her husband, Dennis; a son, Darren, and two daughters, Denise and Dianna, all of Superior; two granddaughters; three brothers, Donald Ludington of Orville, Calif. and Jim and Robert Rink, both of Superior; and two sisters, Donna Collins of Chaplin, Minn. and Carol Shanks of Superior.

Vallina Boury
Vallina Boury, 95, of Manitowoc and formerly of Rice Lake, died Jan. 10 at St. Mary's Home there.
Mrs. Boury was born June 3, 1902 in Rice Lake to Frank and Minnie (King) Crotteau. She married Fred Boury on May 9, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minn., and had worked as a welder at the Manitowoc Shipyards during WW II. She was a violinist and enjoyed quilting.
She is survived by two sons, David and Larry, both of Manitowoc; three daughters, Maxine Kramer and Donna Zirk, both of Manitowoc, and Joyce Budnar of McFarland; 29 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Boury was preceded in death by her husband, Fred in 1979; by two daughters; a son; and two great-grandchildren.

Olga Christenson
Olga L. Christenson, 79, of Ridgeland died Jan. 9 at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Prairie Farm.
Mrs. Christenson was born March 31, 1918 in the Town of Sheridan to Peter and Emma (Holten) Peterson. She was raised there, attended Forest Grove School and married Bert Christenson at Prairie Farm on Dec. 16, 1937. The couple farmed in the Town of Vance Creek until 1947, when they moved to New Richmond. They moved to Amery in 1953 and to a farm near Prairie Farm in 1962. Mrs. Christenson worked for Fabri-Tek at Amery and later for Jerome Foods at Barron and retired in 1984. In 1988 she moved to an apartment in Ridgeland. Mrs. Christenson enjoyed her children and helping others.
She is survived by four sons, Duane of St. Michael, Minn., Robert of Osceola, George of Star Prairie and Gary of Ridgeland; two daughters, Shirlee Southworth of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sonja Christenson of Verona; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Art Peterson of Roberts; and four sisters, Rosella Johnson of Ridgeland, Verla Hrdlichka of Menomonie, Lotus Nevin of Almena and Mary Lou Anderson of New Richmond.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert, on June 25, 1987.

Joseph Cipov
Joseph Cipov, 83, of Chetek died Dec. 29 at Barron Medical Center in Barron.
Mr. Cipov was born March 23, 1914 in Chetek to Gregor and Anna Cipov. He served in the Army during WW II and then worked as a stainless steel polisher in Chicago for many years before returning to the Chetek area 15 years ago. He was a member of the American Legion Post 179, the Lions Club and the Elks. Mr. Cipov loved dancing and fishing.
He is survived by one brother, Jim of New Auburn; two sisters, Helen Pakan of Lake Geneva and Anita Skorski of Winter Haven, Fla.; and longtime friend, Sally Eng of Chetek. He was preceded in death by his wife, Celia "June."
