Shirley M. Freeman
Shirley M. Freeman, 50, loving wife and companion of Richard J. Stillinger, passed away on Friday, Oct. 9, 1998. She was born March 2, 1948, in La Crosse, Wis., the daughter of James W. Freeman and Margaret Jane Fish. She spent her early years in La Crosse, graduated from Logan High School in 1966, and moved to Oklahoma in 1982. She was a graduate of Southern Nazarene University (1993) and worked professionally at Kerr McGee Corporation, Tinker Credit Union and Mercury General Corporation.
Shirley was the perfect hostess whose first love was to entertain family and friends in her home. ``Just Desserts,'' her small business, was a result of her desire to share with others her love of baking.
She is survived by her husband; stepchildren Mark and Michele; sisters Sharon, Sandra, Sheila and Susan; brother James and his wife, Andrea; her nieces and nephews; and the many friends and co-workers she touched.

Arlan D. VandeWater
REEDSBURG, Wis. - Arlan D. VandeWater, 65, of Reedsburg, passed away on Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at the Hillview Nursing Home in La Crosse. He was born on April 16, 1933, in La Crosse, the son of Harry and Agnes (Cook) VandeWater, and grew up on the family farm in rural La Crosse County. Arlan was a 1951 graduate of Holmen High School and he studied agriculture at UW-River Falls for the next two years.
On July 25, 1953, he was united in marriage to Alice Romskog in Holmen, Wis., and they happily spent the next 45 years together.
He proudly served his country as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., from 1953 to 1955, then returned to Wisconsin to graduate from UW-River Falls in 1957. From 1957 to 1960, he taught at Chetek High School, then returned to school to earn a masters degree at UW-Madison while working as a field representative for Wisconsin Farm Bureau from 1960 to 1963. In 1963, he moved to Reedsburg to become guidance counselor at Webb High School, and was named high school principal in 1965, where he served until 1990. In 1990, Arlan returned to counseling, serving as a career counselor at MATC, where he retired on July 1, 1998.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Reedsburg; was an active member of the Reedsburg Kiwanis Club for over 30 years; served on the UW-Baraboo Advisory Board; and was a true friend and supporter of education in Reedsburg. Arlan enjoyed reading, was an avid auto-racing fan, enjoyed long walks with his dog, Dusty, and especially treasured spending time with his four grandchildren.
Survivors include Alice, his wife of 45 years; two sons, Dave (Cindy) of Plain, and Keith (Robin) of New Freedom, Pa.; two daughters, Karen (Chris) Larsen of Mequon, Wis., and Kristin VandeWater of Janesville, Wis.; four grandchildren, Kenny and Caroline VandeWater of Plain, and Emily and Timmy VandeWater of New Freedom, Pa.; a sister, Eileen Tuseth of Rochester, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Agnes VandeWater.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1998, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Reedsburg, with Dr. James Steinbrecher and Rev. Charles Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held today, Oct. 14, 1998, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg. Interment will take place in St. John's Cemetery in Reedsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to the Arlan VandeWater Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.

Donald B. `Don' Harris
TOMAH, Wis. - Donald B. ``Don'' Harris, 72, of Tomah, Wis., died quietly at his home Monday, Oct. 12, 1998. He was born Nov. 5, 1925, to Carl ``Pete'' and Vila (Chamberlain) Harris at Necedah, Wis. He grew up in the Necedah area and attended Necedah High School, graduating in 1943. He entered the Navy at age 17 and served in the South Pacific aboard the USS California (BB44) during W.W.II. After being discharged from the Navy he returned to Wisconsin, where he met and married Marie M. Hale of Mauston, Wis., on Nov. 2, 1947.
After working in a jewelry and flower shop in Mauston, he moved to Tomah where he founded Harris Jewelers on April 6, 1950, and operated it until July of 1989. Don was a Certified Gemologist and Registered Jeweler. He was active in professional organizations, the American Gem Society, Jewelers of America and Wisconsin Retail Jewelers Association. He served a term as president of the Wisconsin Retail Jewelers Association. He was active in community organizations, serving as president of the Tomah Area Chamber of Commerce and on many other committees.
Don is survived by his wife, Marie of Tomah; his sons, Craig (Andrea) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Cameron (Ann) of Rochester, Minn.; his daughter-in-law, Jodi of Rhinelander, Wis.; his grandchildren, Marisa and Arianna of Virginia Beach, Va., Stephanie and Elizabeth of Rochester, Minn., and Joshua and Megan of Rhinelander, Wis.; his sisters, Alberta (Carol) Ellingson of Park River, N.D., Dorothy (Hank) Wegner of Necedah, Joan Stevenson of Lisle, Ill., and Connie (John) Kovel of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and his brother-in-law, Richard (Gladys) Hale of Mauston.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Scott.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 310 W. Elizabeth St., Tomah. Reverend Robert C. Toso will officiate. Burial with military honors by Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post #201 will be in Memorial Garden Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah.
Relatives and friends are invited to call today from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 East Monowau St., Tomah, and at the church on Thursday from 1 p.m. until time of the service.
Family requests memorials may be given to the Hospice Touch, c/o Tomah Memorial Hospital, 321 Butts Ave., Tomah, Wis., 54660, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 310 W. Elizabeth St., Tomah, in his memory.

Norman Frank Loeffler
Norman F. Loeffler, 77, died at his home on Monday, Oct. 12, 1998. He was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Caledonia, Minn., to Frank and Norma (Niebeling) Loeffler. He married Norma Mc Adam on June 25, 1949. Norman had worked at Allis Chalmers for twenty-five years, prior to their closing. He then worked at River Steel until his retirement. During his retirement, he worked as a crossing guard at numerous intersections.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; two sons, Ted A. (Marta) Loeffler of Sparta and Thomas G. (Linda) Loeffler of La Crosse; four grandchildren, Amy Jo Cantu, and Shawn, Mark and Amanda Loeffler; two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Cory Cantu; two sisters, Ellen (Carl) Willenberg of La Crosse and Shirley Stetzer of Onalaska; a sister-in-law, Eileen Scheitzach of La Crosse; a nephew, Michael Scheitzach of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, a sister, Violet and one brother. Memorial services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Reverend John Parcher will officiate and the cremains will be eniched in the mausoleum at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the services.
The Dickinson Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Evelyn M. Jungen
Evelyn M. Jungen, 77, of La Crosse, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at her home. She was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Menomonie, Wis., to Fred and Harriet (Hutchins) Patridge. She married Erwin Kramer and he preceded her in death. She married Harry Jungen and he preceded her in death. She had worked for Gateway Glass Products of La Crosse for 25 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Donna J. Budnik of La Crosse; by a son, Daniel (Margaret) Kramer of West Salem; by a son-in-law, Larry L. Budnik of West Salem; by a sister, Goldene Mondragon of New Mexico; by six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, her parents, and infant son, a daughter, one sister and two brothers preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at Sletten McKee Hanson Funeral Home, La Crosse. The Reverend Doug Graham of River of Life Assembly of God will officiate. Burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.

Dorothy Mae Morrissey
Dorothy M. Morrissey, 87, died at the Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center on Monday, Oct. 12, 1998. She was born Feb. 10, 1911, in La Crosse, to Frank and Mary (Mossholder) Welch. She married Charles Morrissey on Nov. 8, 1936, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1992. She had worked for the Woolworth Company, Hebbard Drugs and Marcus Theaters.
She is survived by two nephews.
She will be placed in the Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery, on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
Dickinson Family Funeral Homes are assisting with the arrangements.

Wayne Fredrickson
VIROQUA, Wis. - Wayne Fredrickson, 74, of Viroqua, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Vernon Manor, Viroqua. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Zion Lutheran Church. Burial, with military rites by Viroqua VFW Post 3032 and American Legion Post 138, will be in Zion Cemetery. Friends may call after 12:30 p.m. Friday at the church. The Larson Funeral Home, Viroqua, is serving the family.

Kenneth E. Newman
ONALASKA, Wis. - Kenneth E. Newman, 76, of Onalaska, died in his home on Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998.
He was born in Ontario, Wis., on July 17, 1922, to Thomas and Agnes (Clark) Newman. He married Marian Klein on Nov. 21, 1942, in Viola, Wis. He had worked at Allis Chalmers until retiring due to ill health.
Ken was a decorated World War II veteran, receiving a Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart Medal. He was wounded while fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 12 of La Crosse.
Ken was an avid racing fan and loved to travel and spend time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Marian; his eleven children, Jerilyn Newman of Carmichael, Calif., Alona (Allen) Eidsmoe of La Crosse, Robin (Judy) Newman of Rochester, Minn., Mary (Roger) Rhodes of Black River Falls, Wis., Gary (Karla) Newman of La Crosse, Wayne (Sue) Newman of Kingston, Wash., Peggy (Tim) Mormann of Dresbach, Minn., Lorrie (Woody) Newman of Milton, Fla., Julie (Mark) Newman of La Crosse, Jodi (Shawn) Scarlett of Orangebole, Calif., and Shelly (John) McMahon of La Crosse; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, Miles Newman of West Salem and Lloyd (Carolyn) Newman of La Crosse; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dearly beloved dog, ``Minnie.'' He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. from the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of Onalaska. Rev. Andrew K. Buhrow will officiate. Burial will take place in the Onalaska Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from noon until the time of services.
