Neal R. Gross
Neal R. Gross, 72, of La Crosse, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, following a long battle with heart disease, diabetes and leukemia. He was born on Aug. 25, 1926, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., to John ``Bud'' and Hulda (Strack) Gross. He married Ruby C. Howe on Aug. 20, 1955, in La Crosse. Neal was an Army veteran of World War II. He had worked as terminal manager for the former Gross Common Carrier in La Crosse, and retired in 1989.
In addition to his wife, Ruby, he is survived by two sons, Gary (Carol) Gross of La Crosse and Mark (Tami) Gross of rural Onalaska, Wis.; three grandchildren, Nicholas Scott, Kristina Ann and Emily Ann; a brother, Richard (Becky) of Tempe, Ariz.; his mother, Hulda of La Crosse; two nieces; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father in 1978.
Neal will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He has left a legacy of love and kindness that will be remembered by all.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at the First Congregational Church, La Crosse. The Rev. Dr. Jerry M. Jordan will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
Calvin Paul `Kelly' Marx
VIROQUA, Wis. - Calvin Paul ``Kelly'' Marx, 92, of the Friendship House in Westby and longtime businessman from Viroqua, died on Friday morning, Sept. 18, 1998, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. He was born on June 10, 1906, in Cashton, to William and Jennie (Johnson) Marx. On June 24, 1933, he married Harriett Collins. They moved to Viroqua in 1934, and owned and operated Marx Insurance Agency prior to his retirement. He had served on the Viroqua city council, Vernon Manor board of trustees, director of Electric Cleaner Co. of Osseo, and a charter board member of Capital Transamerica Insurance Company of Madison. Harriett died on June 6, 1995.
Kelly is survived by one son, John Marx of Alliance, Neb.; one daughter, Mary Huddleson of Wyneewood, Okla.; and three grandchildren, T.J. Marx of Gillette, Wyo., Carrie Marx of Alliance, and Molly (Josh) Crokell of Wyneewood. He is also preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Matt Huddleson.
Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, with Rev. Steve Zastrow officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Melvin J. Fink
BELOIT, Wis. - Melvin J. Fink, 85, of 507 Merrill St., Beloit, died Friday evening, Sept. 18, 1998, in U.W. Hospital in Madison. He was born Aug. 24, 1913, in rural Alma Center, Wis., the son of William C. and Regina V. (Strobel) Fink. He married Belva Myhre on Aug. 14, 1935, in rural Hixton, Wis. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Beloit, was employed as a machinist with Fairbanks-Morse, was a WWII veteran and was the past adjutant of the American Legion in Coon Valley, Wis.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Belva; his loving children, James (Faye) of Beloit, and Beverly (Alan) Bobholz of Helenville, Wis.; seven grandchildren, James (Sue) Fink Jr. of Cottage Grove, Wis., Cindy (Jerry) Plummer of Rockton, Ill., Shannon (Doug) Dean of Roscoe, Ill., Jennifer Schenk of South Carolina, Michael (Cindy) Fink of Beloit, Jeffrey (Vickie) Bakken of East Troy, and Brenda (Shawn) Eckhardt of Stoughton; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leroy (Lorraine) Fink of Branson, Mo., Robert (Betty) Fink of Tucson, Ariz., and Jerome (Bernice) Fink of Oshkosh; two sisters, Helen Mischo of Urbana, Ill., and Caroline (Gene) Sickels of Tomahawk, Wis. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry; a brother, Earl; grandsons, Vaughn Fink, Doug Bakken and Jeffrey Bobholz; and granddaughter, Angela Bakken.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, in Coon Valley Lutheran Church, Coon Valley, Wis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Schoenfeld Funeral Home, 1000 Inman Parkway, Beloit; and at the church Wednesday from noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family will establish a memorial at a later date.
Loran J. Day
EAST MOLINE/PORT BYRON, Ill. - Loran J. Day, 81, of East Moline and formerly of Port Byron, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. John's Catholic Church, Rapids City, Ill. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 4 p.m. prayer service, in the church. Memorials may be made to the church or the American Cancer Society. The Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron, is in charge of arrangements.
Donald G. Silbaugh
TAMPA, Fla. - Donald G. Silbaugh, 71, of Tampa and formerly of La Crosse, died in Tampa on Friday, Sept. 18, 1998. He was born June 9, 1927, in Wisconsin to Cleitus and Alice (Clark) Silbaugh. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Larson and Diana (Les) Kam of Hawaii; three grandchildren; two brothers, Lyall (Marilyn) of Onalaska and David (Rose) of La Crosse; one sister, Kathryn (Walt) Verdon of Tiffin, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Private family services will be conducted in Hawaii at a later date.
Loren S. Kowitz
SPARTA/NORWALK, Wis. - Loren S. Kowitz, 79, of Sparta and formerly of Norwalk, died Sunday morning, Sept. 20, 1998, at Rolling Hills Nursing Home, Sparta.
He was born in Lyons Valley, Monroe County, Wis., on June 14, 1919, the son of Otto and Myra (Wells) Kowitz. On Dec. 14, 1940, he was united in marriage to Muriel Sullivan in Sparta. They farmed in Lyons Valley and lived on the family farm until 1997.
He was a 4-H leader and a member of the Norwalk school board and was the Lyons Valley clerk for the rural school board.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Mary Jo Downing.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel; three daughters, Janice (Ronald) Schendel of Sparta, Joyce Murphy of Cashton, and Joan Solberg of Sparta; one son, James (Patricia) Kowitz of Norwalk; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be held. The Page-Smith Funeral Home, Sparta, is in charge of arrangements.
Martin S. Ellefson
LA FARGE, Wis. - Martin S. Ellefson, 92, of R.2, La Farge, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, in Vernon Manor, Viroqua. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church, rural Viroqua. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, at the Larson Funeral Home, Viroqua; and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Zion Cemetery fund.
Frank J. Gerth
FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. - Frank J. Gerth, 52, of W324 Lipinski Road, Fountain City, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
Frank was born in Winona, Minn., on March 24, 1946, to Henry and Mary Malewicki Gerth.
He married Kathleen Oberfoell on July 20, 1991, at Faith Assembly of God Church, Winona. Frank is an Army veteran, serving from 1965 to 1967 as a light vehicle operator, attaining the rank of SP4(T).
Frank was employed by Cytec-Fiberite for 34 years, currently as a master scheduler.
He is a member of American Legion Post #9, Winona, and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid bow and rifle hunter. He also enjoyed fishing and bicycling, and was an expert slalom waterskier.
Frank is survived by his wife, Kathy; one son, Nick of Fountain City; one daughter, Jenny Gerth of Winona; one brother, Henry J. (Ann) Gerth Jr. of Winona; and five sisters, Henrietta Gerth of Winona, Phyllis Fredricks of La Crosse, Polly (Phil) Johnson of Louisville, Ky., Helen (Rich) Flores of Winona, and Irene (Al) Mulyck of Winona. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Frank was preceded in death by his parents and aunts and uncles.
A funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona. Rev. Joseph Keefe will officiate. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Casketbearers are Robert Oberfoell, Jeremy Dormanen, Steven Schabacker, Henry Gerth Jr., William Weifenbach and Richard Flores.
Honorary bearers are Albert Mulyck, Donald Wille, Phillip Johnson, Roger and Gregory Lemmer, Ronald Ruben, Charles Nagle, Scott Fredricks and Arthur Thurley.
Members of American Legion Post #9, Winona, will conduct military burial rites at the cemetery.
