BOSCOBEL, Wis. - Erva M. McDougal, 89, of Boscobel, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at the Boscobel Area Health Care in Boscobel. She was born on April 28, 1909. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Thoni-Kendall Funeral Home, Boscobel. Burial in West Fork Cemetery, Richland County. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marcia J. Seifert, 63, of La Crosse, died on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in her home. A complete obituary will be announced by the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse.
Carol J. McCurdy
ONALASKA, Wis. - Carol J. McCurdy, 61, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in her home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Sept. 22, 1936, to Floyd and Nina (Dettinger) Clott. Carol and her husband, Richard, opened Mac's Sport Shop in 1961. They have enjoyed the last nine years in the mild winters of Overton, Nev. Her passions in life were bingo, football, gambling, golf, fishing, hunting, bowling, quilting, dancing and crocheting.
She is survived by her husband of forty-one years, Richard; the biggest joys in her life, her children, Tim (Jill) McCurdy and grandchildren, Tommy, Kimberly and Kaitlyn of Springfield, Va. and Coleen (Dan) Wilhere and grandchildren, Kelsey and Ryan of Langhorne, Penn.; a sister, Gloria (Bob) Guck of Viroqua; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her mother-in-law, Leona McCurdy of La Crosse.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Lyle (Janice) and a sister, Jeanette (Sonny).
She will be sadly missed by all.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church. The Reverend Ryan Aarestad will officiate and burial will be in the Onalaska Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska, today from 3 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
Ella Whitt
READSTOWN, Wis. - Ella Whitt, 91, of Readstown, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at the Vernon Manor in Viroqua.
She was married to Fred Setinsky in Chicago in 1922. He passed away in 1971, and she married Hobart Whitt in 1975. He passed away in 1979.
She is survived by two daughters, Emily Lee Oliver of Viola and Linda (Roger) Nelson of Viroqua; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Readstown. Pastor Michael Wollman will officiate and burial will be in the Readstown Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sime Funeral Home in Readstown on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday at the church from noon until time of services.
Vernie C. Clark
CASHTON/DELL, Wis. - Vernie C. Clark, 73, of rural Cashton, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 9, 1998, at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Dell United Methodist Church. Burial in Dell Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. devotional service at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, Westby. Friends may also call on Sunday after 1 p.m. at the church. The Vossetieg Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
Ferne F. Inman
DE SOTO, Wis. - Ferne F. Inman, 83, of R.1 De Soto, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, 1998, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. She was born in Crawford County on June 28, 1915, to Marion and Mabel (Cox) Gilman. She was united in marriage to Ellsworth Inman on May 10, 1933. They lived and farmed on the Inman family farm all their married years. Ellsworth died on Jan. 17, 1996, and Ferne continued to live on the home farm until the present time. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (David) Engen of Wales, Wis. and Avanelle (Jay) Washburn of Clinton, Ill.; two sons, Terry (Donna) Inman of Waukesha and Rickie (Colleen) Inman of Two Rivers; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Rolland (Joyce) Gilman of Retreat; four sisters, Irene Ross of La Crosse, La Verne (Edwin) Brudos of Viroqua, Lucille (Tom) Dagnon and Elaine (Kenneth) Elliott, both of Stoddard; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Ronald; one grandson, Michael Long; two sisters, Blanche Hammond and Anita Reynolds; five brothers, Keith, Cleo, Carlyle, Emerald and Marlin Gilman.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, in the New Hope United Methodist Church at Redmound. Pastor Alice Richards will officiate with burial in the Walnut Mound Cemetery at Retreat. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in De Soto on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday after 10 a.m. Family suggests that memorials be given to New Hope Methodist Church.
William E. `Bill' Houlihan
William E. ``Bill'' Houlihan, 75, of La Crosse, died on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home.
He was born in Caledonia, Minn., on July 17, 1923, to Edward and Crescenthia (Hunt) Houlihan. He married Corrine J. Fogel on April 14, 1967, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse.
Bill had worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and for the city of La Crosse before retiring. He and Corrine also served as childcare providers for many years.
Bill was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and was a life-time member of Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse.
He is survived by his wife, Corrine, and was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Merle and Earl Houlihan. Bill was also blessed with many close friends and family that have been very supportive. Much extended gratitude goes out to two sisters-in-law, Joyce and Vicki; two nieces, Cheryl and Julie; and special friend, Milo Shepardson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. from the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman. Very Rev. Robert J. Cook will officiate. Burial, with military rites by American Legion Post 52, will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., where a Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be given to the charity or organization of the donor's choice.
Bill will be loved and missed by all who knew him.
Rose J. Konop
Rose J. Konop, 92, of La Crosse, died on Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at the Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center. She was born on March 19, 1906, in La Crosse, to Martin and Margaret (Pinker) Konop. She had lived at 1518 S. Ninth St., La Crosse, all her life until she entered Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center in 1993. Rose had never married, but chose to care for her mother following her father's death in July of 1939. She worked for the La Crosse Telephone Company, now Century Telephone, until her retirement. She was a telephone operator, then chief operator, and later became supervisor.
Rose was a longtime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Parish in La Crosse, where she was baptized and confirmed. In the 1960s, when parish boundaries were established, she became a member of Holy Trinity Parish. Rose had a very strong love of the Lord along with a very deep belief in prayer. All of her family relied on her prayers and encouragement in their times of need, and she never let them down. She was a very loving and caring person, always helping those in need. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved parties, family get-togethers and music. She could harmonize any tune.
Rose is survived by nieces and nephews, Marian (Ervin) Crogan, Dorothy (Hugh) Boschert and George Konop, all of La Crosse, Margaret Hanrahan of Onalaska, Donald Konop of Minneapolis, Minn., and Delores Condreva of Illinois; many grand-nieces and -nephews, and three very faithful grand-nieces, Kelly (Steve) Thompson and family, Denise Hanrahan and family, and Tammy (Scott) Isensee and family, all of Onalaska. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tony, Martin and John Konop; and two sisters, Mary Dvorak and Theresa Eeg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at the Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center chapel. The Revs. Thomas J. Smith and Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the care center chapel on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
Eldred Jay Clift
VIOLA, Wis. - Eldred Jay Clift, 92, of Viola, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Vernon Manor in Viroqua, Wis. He was born in Viola, Vernon County, Wis., on Dec. 26, 1905, the son of Charlie and Rhoda (Taylor) Clift. He married Freda M. Felton on May 7, 1943. They farmed near Viola for many years and were known statewide for their quality-registered Guernsey cattle, having received many county and state awards, and were recognized by the American Guernsey Club of New Hampshire. Eldred was a member of the Vernon County and the Wisconsin Guernsey associations.
He was a proud American and a United States Army World War II veteran, having served in Italy. He was a member of the Viola Hamilton Harris American Legion Post #447. He was recently awarded his 50-year pin and was the post's oldest member.
He lived his entire life in or near Viola and had been able to live in his own home until only recently. After retiring in 1970, and moving to Viola in 1990, he was proud to be living in a home built by his father. He was a devoted husband, brother and brother-in-law, and was a special uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by many nieces; nephews; and four sisters-in-law, Frances (Robert) Beatty of Sebring, Fla., Helen (Harold) Rasmussen of Prairie du Chien, Thelma (Frank) Hanifl of La Crosse, and Geraldine Felton of Richland Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Freda, on Jan. 2, 1991; his sister, Georgia Beth Abelt; and three brothers, Herbert, Arnie and E. La Verne ``Cliffy'' Clift.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, in the Viola United Methodist Church. Pastor Doris Richardson Clark will officiate, with burial in the Viola Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Hamilton Harris American Legion Post #447. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday after 10 a.m. The Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is assisting the family.
