Dolly Cross
Dolly O. Cross, 91, of Palm Desert, Calif., died there Jan. 7.
Mrs. Cross was born June 4, 1906 in North Dakota to Charles and Mary (Hunt) Stewart. She attended Valley City North Dakota Teachers College and taught elementary school in North Dakota. She married George Cross, and they owned a butcher shop, part of Johnson Grocery in Rice Lake, for many years. Mrs. Cross was an elementary substitute teacher in Rice Lake in the early 30s. She was on the board of directors of the Wisconsin Women's Bowling Assn. for over 10 years, served as president of the Wisconsin Ladies Elks Bowling Assn., and bowled for many years on different teams in Rice Lake. She moved to California in 1977.
Mrs. Cross is survived by a son, Bob of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, George.
Lonnie Davis
Lonnie L. Davis, 57, of Dallas died Jan. 1 at the Dallas Healthcare Center.
Mr. Davis was born Feb. 17, 1940 to Roy and Edna (Foster) Davis in Barron County. He spent most of his life in the Dallas area and on April 4, 1964 married Shirley Jones at New Auburn. He was a dealer in scrap metal and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Shirley; a son, Max of Chetek; three daughters, Darla Hengst and Helen Davis, both of North Dakota, and Tabatha Schmitz of Cameron; three grandchildren; one brother, Ralph of Chetek; four sisters, Iola Olson, Beverly Hintzman, and Nona Armstrong, all of Chetek, and Lola Braden of Rice Lake.
Monsignor Gerald Durst
Monsignor Gerald F. Durst, 79, of Columbus, Ohio, died Dec. 26.
Mr. Durst was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Durst, who had operated the Northside Grocery in Rice Lake for many years.
He is survived by one brother, Joseph of La Crosse; and two sisters, Mary Koch of Milwaukee and Sister Luanne Durst of La Crosse.
Larry Elwood
Larry H. Elwood, 60, died Jan. 12 at the Barron Medical Center.
Mr. Elwood was born in Rusk County and graduated from Weyerhaeuser High School in 1956. He served in the Army and later worked in Kenosha for American Motors.
He is survived by his mother, Anne, of Weyerhaeuser; two brothers, Dale of Chetek and Dick of Weyerhaeuser; and a sister, Barb Prorok of Chetek.
Alfred Erickson
Alfred Leo Erickson, 76, of Cumberland died Jan. 8 at Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake.
Mr. Erickson was born on April 25, 1921 in Arland to William and Elizabeth (Bauer) Erickson. On Jan. 10, 1942 he married Leona Strenke. He had been a farmer and worked for 3M Company in Cumberland for several years. He had operated a small engine repair shop for much of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Leona; four daughters, Darlene Sebens and Sharon Pearson, both of Cumberland, Beverly Davis of Cameron, and Brenda Ofelt of Turtle Lake; a son, Wayne of Cumberland; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Carl of Siren and Fred of Clayton; and two sisters, Florence Thompson of Cameron and Celia Hanson of Barron.
Mr. Erickson was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie; and two grandchildren.
Henry Gazza Sr.
Henry J. Gazza Sr., 91, of Chetek and formerly of the Peoria, Ill., area, died Jan. 5 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Rice Lake.
Mr. Gazza was born Sept. 3, 1906 in Riverton, Ill., to Amato and Anastasia (Micheloni) Gazza. On April 13, 1929 he married Mae Scohy in Peoria. He worked for 40 years as a quality controller for Keystone Steel and Wire Co. of Bartonville, Ill., and was a member of the Keystone Goodfellows Club in Peoria. The couple had moved to Chetek 30 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Mae; a son, Henry of Pekin, Ill.; one daughter, Anna Whittenburg of Chetek; two brothers, Tony Leonetti of Williamsville, Ill., and Sam Leonetti of New Jersey; a sister, Mary Leonetti of Springfield, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Donald Hafele
Donald Hafele, 48, of Rice Lake died Dec. 25 at his home.
Mr. Hafele was born in Rice Lake on Jan. 5, 1949, to George and Clarice (Kringle) Hafele. He graduated from Cameron High School in 1967 and married Dorothy Folz at Bessemer, Mich., on Feb. 14, 1969. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and returned to Rice Lake in 1973. Mr. Hafele was a service manager working for Coca-Cola for 24 years. He was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
Mr. Hafele is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Troy and Todd, both of Rice Lake; his mother, Clarice of Cameron; and a brother, Myron of Howard's Grove.
Alberta Hanson
Alberta M. Hanson, 73, of Rice Lake died Jan. 13 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
Mrs. Hanson was born Dec. 21, 1924 to John and Evelyn Meysembourg at Almena. Her family moved to the Campia area and she attended Campia School and graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1944. She married Eugene Hanson on Aug. 30, 1944 at Fort Sill, Okla., and began working for Wright Products in 1952. Mrs. Hanson took a leave of absence to raise a family and then returned to work for Wright Products until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of the Catholic Council of Women, was active in the St. Joseph Fall Festival and loved to paint and do wood crafts.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene; two daughters, Gloria Vonasek of Rice Lake, and Diann Olson of Maple Grove, Minn.; three sons, Larry of Rice Lake, LeRoy of Ladysmith, and Duane of Chetek; seven grandchildren; her stepmother, Eva Meysembourg of Sussex; two sisters, Lorretta Howenstein of Brookfield, and Doris Kraemer of Ocala, Fla.; five brothers, Leonard of Ocala, John of Madison, Jerald of Sussex, Donald of Brookfield, and Virgil of Powers, Mich.
She was preceded in death by a grandchild.
Wanda Hanson
Wanda Hanson, 75, of Barron died Jan. 5 at her home.
Ms. Hanson was born Nov. 30, 1922 in the Village of Hillsdale to Clinton and Maude (LaSalle) Hanson. She grew up in the Town of Maple Grove, attended Victory School, and graduated from Barron High School. She then attended Rice Lake Normal School and the Eau Claire Teachers College. She earned a bachelor's degree in upper elementary education and a master's degree in social studies and language arts. Ms. Hanson began teaching in 1944 at the Victory School in the Town of Maple Grove. She taught at the Africa School near Wickware, at schools in Barron and at Riverview Middle School there until her retirement in 1995. She had been a church organist had taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school.
Ms. Hanson is survived by a brother, Seldon of Duluth; and many nieces, cousins, and friends.
