Harold W. Baumbach
Harold W. Baumbach, 77, of La Crosse and Coulee Spring, near Genoa, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, in Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born in Sparta on April 19, 1921, to Julius and Lizzy Baumbach. He married LaVonne (Bonnie) G. Deal and they later divorced. He enjoyed working as a carpenter and on his farm until the time of his death. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
He was a life member and past commander of VFW Post 10532 of Coon Creek and a life member of American Legion Post 52 in La Crosse. He was to be recognized this month as a 50-year member of the AFL-CIO Carpenters' Local 140 in La Crosse. Harold was active in the Genoa area and enjoyed participating in the village meetings.
He is survived by three daughters, Lorna Lynn (Thomas) Schini of Onalaska, Beth Ann (Joel) King of Appleton, and Bonita Jean (Richard) Enberg of La Crosse; grandchildren, Paul H. (Lynn) Manske, Kelly R. Seloover, Rebecca L. Schmeckpeper, Robert M. Schmeckpeper, Benjamin M. Schmeckpeper, Laurabelle J. Enberg and Travis R. Enberg; one sister, Shirley Logan and one brother, Jerry Baumbach, both of Iowa; and a loving and caring lifetime friend, Elaine Jeffers. He was preceded in death by one brother, Alvin.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Richard T. Pamperin will officiate and burial with military rites by the American Legion Post 52 will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Sparta. Family and friends may call at the Woodruff Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road this evening from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Florian A. Lins
READSTOWN, Wis. - Florian A. Lins, 69, of R.1, Readstown, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. He was born Oct. 11, 1928, in Spring Green, Wis., to Albert and Anna (Pronold) Lins. After graduation from Spring Green School, he attended Madison Business College. He then enlisted in the Air Force and while serving in England, he was married to Sigrid Anderson on June 12, 1954. They were later divorced.
Florian worked for Chamberlan Manufacturing in Waterloo, Iowa, as an industrial engineer before moving to the Readstown area, where he served as the Readstown village clerk and treasurer. On Dec. 27, 1978, he was united in marriage to Willeene Otterson. For the past few years he has served as custodian of the Viroqua United Methodist Church.
Florian is survived by his wife, Willeene of Readstown; two daughters, Karen (Bob) Hunter of Celina, Ohio, and Dierdre (Ronnie) Baker of Leawood, Kan.; one son, Gary Lins of Cedar Falls, Iowa; four stepchildren; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Marian Maxwell of Spring Green and Margaret (Robert) Stewart of Brookings, S.D.
His parents; one stepson, Tim Otterson; one brother, Norman; and three sisters, Agnes Berres, Alice Lins and Bernice Serdy preceded him in death.
Florian took pride in his yard and garden, and loved to feed and watch the birds.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Viroqua United Methodist Church. The Rev. Frank Thompson will officiate, with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Members of the Viroqua VFW Post 3032 and American Legion Post 138 will conduct military rites. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua today from 4 to 7 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday after 10 a.m.
Le Roy V. Gilbertson
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Le Roy V. Gilbertson, 60, a longtime resident of Lakeview Health Center, West Salem, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born March 5, 1938, in Whitehall, Wis., to Hansel and Ovedia (Olson) Gilbertson.
Survivors include his father, Hansel (Ellen) Gilbertson of La Crosse; two brothers, Bob (Nancy) Gilbertson of La Crosse, and Kenneth Gilbertson of West Salem; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ovedia.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept 3, at 2 p.m., from the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem. Rev. Ryan Aarestad of First Lutheran Church, Onalaska, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, West Salem. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church in Onalaska, and Lakeview Health Center in West Salem.
Donald C. Crogan
TREMPEALEAU, Wis. - Donald C. Crogan, 68, of Trempealeau, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, in Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born Oct. 1, 1929, in the town of Gale, Trempealeau County, Wis., to Clement and Anastacia (Schwarzhoff) Crogan. Donald served in the U.S. Army during Korea, in the 34th General Hospital Unit. On Feb. 12, 1955, he married Berniece I. Skaar in Galesville, Wis. He loved his family, the river, snowmobiling and the outdoors, especially hunting. For most of his working life, he was employed as a machinist for J.I. Case of Racine, Wis. Retiring in August of 1989, the couple moved to the Trempealeau area.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Michael C. of Sturtevant, Wis., and Mark D. (Laura) of Mount Pleasant, Wis.; two daughters, Melanie A. Crogan of Zion, Ill., and Michele (Mike) Olsen of East Troy, Wis.; five grandchildren, Colette, Daniel, Benjamin, Myles and Mikelyn; a sister, Roseann Ristow of Galesville; his father-in-law, Bert Skaar of Hixton, Wis.; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church of Galesville, with Fr. Robert Wagner officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesviille.
Friends may call at the Smith Mortuary, Galesville, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a liturgical vigil at 8 p.m.
Susan M. (Kyle) Baker
Susan M. Baker, 71, formerly of Onalaska, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Baxter County Hospital in Mountain Home, Ark. She was born Nov. 2, 1926, to James M. and Lydia M. (Elliott) Kyle in Marshall, Ark.
Survivors include a son, Phillip R. Baker of Marshall, Ark.; a daughter, Cynthia G. Wojahn of Onalaska; three brothers, Otis Kyle of Cotter, Ark., and Johnny and Jesse Kyle, both of Marshall, Ark.; five grandchildren, Cathryn Baker of Denton, Texas, Stephanie Crowther-Benson of Janesville, Wis., Phillip A. Baker of Batesville, Ark., and Coral S. and Jake Baker of Casablanca, Morocco; and two great-grandchildren, Micyla and Danielle Baker of Batesville, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Jesse Baker; a brother, Olin Kyle; and a granddaughter, Coral D. Baker.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Rock Creek Cemetery, Harriet, Ark., with Jim Ragland officiating. Arrangements were made by the Roller-Coffman Funeral Home of Marshall, Ark.
Ervin O. Nerison
WESTBY, Wis. - Ervin O. Nerison, 75, of rural Westby, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. He was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Vernon County, Wis., to Oliver and Esther (Gronning) Nerison. Ervin was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church, rural Westby, where he was a lifelong member and served as treasurer. He attended the Nerison School and later was the school clerk for 15 years. On Feb. 24, 1945, he married Alice Ihle at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church.
Ervin was on the Vernon County fair board for 15 years; served as town of Jefferson chairman for 16 years; was elected to the Vernon County board in 1974; and began his 14th term in 1998. On the county board, he served as chairman of the personnel committee; chairman of the highway committee; and as a member of the health committee and the unit on aging committee. In addiiton, he was a Vernon County Farm Bureau board member for 30 years; served as president of Vernon County Farm Bureau and Great Rivers FS for many years; was elected to the State Farm Bureau board; and was on the Vernon Coop Association board for several years. Ervin was a dairy leader for Mills North Springville 4-H Club and a member of the Coon Valley Lions Club.
He served as a director of the Midwest Livestock Coop.; the Rural Mutual Insurance Co., Madison; the Rural Security Life Insurance Co., Madison; and the Wisconsin Marketing Association, Madison.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; his son, Lee (Laura) of rural Westby; his daughter, Linda (Gary) Johnson of Loyal, Wis.; one grandson, Ryan Johnson; and four granddaughters, Heather (Leslie) Ormond, and Thea, Seri and Erin Nerison; three sisters, Katherine (Donald) Johnson of La Crosse, Orvella Nustad of Aurora, Colo., and Lucille (Dick) Wrobel of La Crosse; aunts, Ruth Burke, Enola Iverson and Ruth Nerison; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1979, and his mother in 1995.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at the Vang Lutheran Church, rural Westby. Revs. Paul Jordahl and Steve Meyer will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Seland Funeral Chapel in Coon Valley on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m., and at the church on Thursday from noon until the time of services.
Solveig Marie Tweito
SPRING GROVE, Wis. - Solveig Marie Tweito, 61, of Cottage Grove, Minn. and formerly of Spring Grove, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, in the Woodbury Care Center, Woodbury, Minn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, Minn. Burial will be in the Trinity Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, at the Roble Funeral Home, Spring Grove, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the church.
Kathleen Grams Bader
SUNNYSIDE, Wash. - Kathleen Grams Bader, 92, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, in the Sun Terrace Residential Home in Sunnyside. She was born July 22, 1906, in La Crosse, Wis. She was preceded in death by her husband, John. Kathleen was a graduate of St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind., class of 1927.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, survived by her three sons, John of Seattle, Wash., William of Richmond, Va., and August of Kent, Wash.; and two daughters, Elise Lacher of Seminole, Fla., and Kathy Shiels of Sunnyside. She is the grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of 10.
Memorial services were held for the immediate family at the home of Hugh and Kathy Shiels on Aug. 22. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
