Lola M. Zacharias
Rural GENOA, Wis. - Lola M. Zacharias, 82, of rural Genoa died on Saturday evening, Aug. 29, 1998, at her home of cancer. She was born on Jan. 7, 1916, in Delton, Wis., to Rev. David and Bessie Brown. Her father served as a pastor in many churches in Wisconsin, including De Soto, Retreat, Liberty Pole, Viola, Springville, and Bishop Branch.
Lola graduated from Viroqua High School in 1934. On June 29, 1940, she married Herman Zacharias in a double wedding with her twin sister, Lois, officiated by her father in Phillips, Wis. In 1948, she and Herman moved to Oregon and retired to rural Genoa in 1988.
She is survived by her husband, Herman; four sisters, Grace Outcelt, of Lansing, Iowa, Lois (Harold) Dyke, Velma Storll, and Hope (Robert) Ivey, all of De Soto; one brother, Delos (Marilyn) Hill, also of De Soto; other relatives, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dorothy Baumgartner; and six brothers, Carrol, David Jr., Marvin, Harold, Truman, and Rolland ``Bunker'' Hill.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at the New Hope United Methodist Church at Redmound, rural De Soto, with Pastor Alice Richards officiating. Burla will be in the Walnut Mound Cemetery, at Retreat, rural De Soto. Friends may call the church from noon until the time of service Tuesday. The Thorson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
Delores K. Zitzman
SPARTA, Wis. - Delores K. Zitzman, 67, of 818 Longcourt St., Sparta, Wis., passed away at her home Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, suddenly.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at the Page-Smith Funeral Home in Sparta. Rev. David Carlson of the United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
Delores was born in Peterson, Minn., on June 12, 1931, daughter of the late Henry Tudahl and Clarice Haugen of Rushford, Minn. She was united in marriage to Carol Hanson on Feb. 11, 1950, in Winona, Minn. On Sept. 16, 1981, she married Ronald Zitzman in Sparta, Wis., who survives. She had moved from Winona, Minn., to Sparta, Wis., in 1954. During her life time, she drove school bus for Sparta's schools and also was a food server at the Southside School for 22 years.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by one son, Randie Jo Hanson, Waupon, Wis.; one daughter, Mrs. Debbie (Bernie) Esser of Cataract, Wis., three step-sons, Gregory (Brenda) Zitzman, Cashton, Wis., Grant Zitzman, Coon Valley, Wis., and Ronald (Jackie) Zitzman Jr., Norfolk, Va.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Sheila (Wendell) Lawrence, Appleton, Wis., and Mrs. Mary Jo (Steve) Jaukowski, Janesville, Wis.; two brothers, Curtis (Audrey) Tudahl, Rushford, Minn., and Milton (Leslie) Tudahl, Joppatown, Md.; five sisters, Mrs. Beverly (John) Hallum, Mrs. Patricia (Mervin) Stennes, Mrs. Rebecca (Allan) Hanson, Ms. Cheryl Tudahl, all of Rushford, Minn., and Mrs. Janice (Kenneth) Gaustad, Houston, Minn.; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Douglas, Joseph, David, and Coral; 16 step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her father and two sisters.
Ida Mae Barrett Wrabel
PEORIA, Ill. - Ida Mae Barrett Wrabel, formerly of La Crosse and now of Peoria, Ill., passed away in St. Francis Hospital in Peoria on Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at the age of 64.
She is survived by her husband Bob, two daughters, Marcie and Becky, and one son, Michael, all of Peoria. Also Ida has two sisters, Marjorie Retzlaff of La Crosse and Margaret Jensen of Streamwood, Ill.; and three brothers, Kenneth Barrett of La Crosse, David of Artesia, N.M., and John of Louisville, Ky.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 1, in Peoria.
Harold W. Baumbach
Harold W. Baumbach, 77, of La Crosse and Coulee Spring, near Genoa, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, in Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born in Sparta on April 19, 1921, to Julius and Lizzy Baumbach. He married LaVonne (Bonnie) G. Deal and they later divorced. He enjoyed working as a carpenter and on his farm until the time of his death. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
He was a life member and past commander of VFW Post 10532 of Coon Creek and a life member of American Legion Post 52 in La Crosse. He was to be recognized this month as a 50-year member of the AFL-CIO Carpenters' Local 140 in La Crosse. Harold was active in the Genoa area and enjoyed participating in the village meetings.
He is survived by three daughters, Lorna Lynn (Thomas) Schini of Onalaska, Beth Ann (Joel) King of Appleton, and Bonita Jean (Richard) Enberg of La Crosse; grandchildren, Paul H. (Lynn) Manske, Kelly R. Seloover, Rebecca L. Schmeckpeper, Robert M. Schmeckpeper, Benjamin M. Schmeckpeper, Laurabelle J. Enberg and Travis R. Enberg; one sister, Shirley Logan and one brother, Jerry Baumbach, both of Iowa; and a loving and caring lifetime friend, Elaine Jeffers. He was preceded in death by one brother, Alvin.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Richard T. Pamperin will officiate and burial with military rites by the American Legion Post 52 will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Sparta. Family and friends may call at the Woodruff Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road this evening from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Le Roy V. Gilbertson
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Le Roy V. Gilbertson, 60, a longtime resident of Lakeview Health Center, West Salem, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born March 5, 1938, in Whitehall, Wis., to Hansel and Ovedia (Olson) Gilbertson.
Survivors include his father, Hansel (Ellen) Gilbertson of La Crosse; two brothers, Bob (Nancy) Gilbertson of La Crosse, and Kenneth Gilbertson of West Salem; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ovedia.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept 3, at 2 p.m., from the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem. Rev. Ryan Aarestad of First Lutheran Church, Onalaska, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, West Salem. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church in Onalaska, and Lakeview Health Center in West Salem.
Donald C. Crogan
TREMPEALEAU, Wis. - Donald C. Crogan, 68, of Trempealeau, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, in Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born Oct. 1, 1929, in the town of Gale, Trempealeau County, Wis., to Clement and Anastacia (Schwarzhoff) Crogan. Donald served in the U.S. Army during Korea, in the 34th General Hospital Unit. On Feb. 12, 1955, he married Bernice I. Skaar in Galesville, Wis. He loved his family, the river, snowmobiling and the outdoors, especially hunting. For most of his working life, he was employed as a machinist for J.I. Case of Racine, Wis. Retiring in August of 1989, the couple moved to the Trempealeau area.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Michael C. of Sturtevant, Wis., and Mark D. (Laura) of Mount Pleasant, Wis.; two daughters, Melanie A. Crogan of Zion, Ill., and Michele (Mike) Olsen of East Troy, Wis.; five grandchildren, Colette, Daniel, Benjamin, Myles and Mikelyn; a sister, Roseann Ristow of Galesville; his father-in-law, Bert Skaar of Hixton, Wis.; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church of Galesville, with Fr. Robert Wagner officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville.
Friends may call at the Smith Mortuary, Galesville, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a liturgical vigil at 8 p.m.
Susan M. (Kyle) Baker
Susan M. Baker, 71, formerly of Onalaska, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Baxter County Hospital in Mountain Home, Ark. She was born Nov. 2, 1926, to James M. and Lydia M. (Elliott) Kyle in Marshall, Ark.
Survivors include a son, Phillip R. Baker of Marshall, Ark.; a daughter, Cynthia G. Wojahn of Onalaska; three brothers, Otis Kyle of Cotter, Ark., and Johnny and Jesse Kyle, both of Marshall, Ark.; five grandchildren, Cathryn Baker of Denton, Texas, Stephanie Crowther-Benson of Janesville, Wis., Phillip A. Baker of Batesville, Ark., and Coral S. and Jake Baker of Casablanca, Morocco; and two great-grandchildren, Micyla and Danielle Baker of Batesville, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Jesse Baker; a brother, Olin Kyle; and a granddaughter, Coral D. Baker.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Rock Creek Cemetery, Harriet, Ark., with Jim Ragland officiating. Arrangements were made by the Roller-Coffman Funeral Home of Marshall, Ark.
Solveig Marie Tweito
SPRING GROVE, Wis. - Solveig Marie Tweito, 61, of Cottage Grove, Minn. and formerly of Spring Grove, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, in the Woodbury Care Center, Woodbury, Minn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, Minn. Burial will be in the Trinity Cemetery.
