Herbert H. Giraud
SPARTA, Wis. - Herbert H. Giraud, 84, of 12850 County Trunk B, Sparta, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation Center, Sparta.
He is survived by his wife, Olive of Sparta; a son, Sherwin (Anita) Giraud of Sparta; three grandchildren, Lisa (Todd) Gordon of Onalaska, Debra (Dale) Brandt of Cataract, Randy (Kim) Giraud of Sparta; seven great-grandchildren, Ashlee and Dustin Gordon, Jordan and Jacob Brandt, Nicholas, Schanelle and Randall Giraud; two sisters, Mrs. Helen (Otto) Synner and Mrs. Louise Vieregge, both of Sparta.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend David Carlson officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
Friends may call at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home after 5 p.m. on Friday and on Saturday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.
Veronica M. Shulka
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Veronica M. Shulka, 68, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Friends may call at the church at the time of services. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien, Wis., is assisting the family.
William `Billy' Dick
GALESVILLE, Wis. - William ``Billy'' Dick, 26, of Galesville, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, in his home.
He was born Aug. 15, 1972, to William and Marilyn (Johnson) Dick in La Crosse, Wis. He attended area schools.
On June 18, 1994, Billy married Tammy (Erbe) in Onalaska, Wis. They both moved back to Galesville.
Billy was employed by Ashley Industries as a Quality Control Supervisor in the Upholstery Department.
Billy is survived by his wife; one daughter, Kayla Marie of Galesville; his parents, William (Marilyn) of Galesville; one sister, Lori (Jerry) Kramer of Galesville; one brother, Todd (Cindy) of Indianapolis, Ind.; paternal grandmother, Mildred Dick of Ettrick; a nephew, Donavon; and two nieces, Corrin and Mackenzie.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents; paternal grandfather; and an aunt.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Zion Lutheran Church in Galesville. Revs. Arnold Flater and Dr. R. Steven Krueger will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Ettrick, Wis.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Smith Mortuary in Galesville and from 9 a.m. until services at the church on Saturday.
Bernadette ``Bernie'' Stellick
Bernadette ``Bernie'' Stellick, 79, of La Crosse, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. She was born April 30, 1919, in Auburn Township, Chippewa County, Wis. to Joseph and Mary (Knetz) Bleskacck. Bernie graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse as a Registered Nurse. On Sept. 11, 1944, she married Donald F. Stellick at Fort McCoy, Wis. He preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 1966. Bernie worked at St. Francis Hospital and then for many years at Lutheran Hospital as a Registered Nurse retiring in 1984. Bernie was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and was a loving mother and grandmother, she will be deeply missed by her family and those who knew her.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean Stellick of Milwaukee, Wis. and Barb (Rod) Newhouse of La Crescent, Minn.; three sons, Richard (Mary) Stellick of Hilbert, Wis., Jerry (Starla) Stellick of Mindoro, Wis. and Steven Stellick of La Crosse; four grandchildren, Sara, Susan, Jeff and Ryan Stellick; two sisters, Janet (Patrick) Brick of Chippewa Falls, Wis. and Ellie (Chuck) Novak of Fond du Lac, Wis.; one brother, Sylvan (Elsie) Bleskacek of Bloomer, Wis.; along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Rev. Lawrence B. Berger officiating. Burial will follow in Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Monday from 10 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. A Christian Prayer Service will be held on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Gertrude (Gertie) Piepmeyer
GENOA, Wis. - Gertrude (Gertie) Piepmeyer, 79, of rural Genoa, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. She was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Comprachtschutz, Germany to Josef and Marie (Schemainda) Bromma. Gertie came to the U.S. in 1952, and married Eugene D. Piepmeyer Aug. 8, 1953, in Racine, Wis. She and Gene owned and operated Gene and Gertie's Resort located south of Genoa on Hwy. 35 for 28 years.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene, former postmaster of Genoa; nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Lavern Chernovski of Racine, Arlene (Bob) Akerlund of Ontonagon, Mich., Judy (Robert) Berger of Beaver Creek, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Anna; brothers, Joseph and Celsus.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stoddard. The Rev. Russell Kloehn will officiate and burial will be in the new church cemetery. Family and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Woodruff Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Lorraine A. Anderson
BLAIR, Wis./ETTRICK, Wis. - Lorraine A. Anderson, 78, of Blair, Wis., died on Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, in the Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home in Whitehall, Wis.
Lorraine was born on Dec. 12, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Julius and Beatrice (Wright) Herried. She attended the Franklin Elementary School. Lorraine married Roy Edwin Anderson on Oct. 11, 1938, in Iowa. He preceded her in death in April of 1972.
Mrs. Anderson is survived by four sons, Jerry (Rosemary), Calvin (Janice) and Darrell (Rita) Anderson, all of Franklin, Wis. and Randy (Mari) Anderson of North Bend, Wis.; a daughter, Judy (Wallace) Crivitz of rural Hegg, Wis.; three brothers, Ardell (Gloria) Herried of Whitehall, Wis., Leonard Herried of Ettrick, Wis. and Larry (Kaye) Herried of New London, Wis.; three sisters, Delores Brenengen of Ettrick, Wis., Leatrice Olson of Rib Lake, Wis. and Ruby Olson of Taylor, Wis.; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Lorraine was preceded in death by three brothers; her twin Lawrence and Vernon and Clayton.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. in the South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery, both in rural Ettrick, Wis. Rev. John Ashland will officiate.
Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Blair, Wis.; and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
Alfred D. `Babe' Harnish, Jr.
Alfred D. ``Babe'' Harnish, Jr., 74, of La Crosse, died at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998. He was born on Sept. 15, 1923, in La Crosse to Alfred and Ragna (Johnson) Harnish. Babe was a World War II Army Veteran having served with the 106th Infantry Division. He was a member of the National Members of Prisoners of War, a member of Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 of La Crescent, Minn. for 54 years and served as head of the Post 595 Color Guard until the time of his illness. He worked for Allis Chalmers of La Crosse for many years and was a past financial officer of the United Auto Workers Union Local 401. Babe later worked for Continental Can Co. of La Crosse. He retired in 1987. Babe continued to be very active in the labor movement. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists Local Lodge 1115, La Crosse and was past Chairman of their Negotiating Committee. At the time of his death he was serving as President of Local Lodge 1115 as well as President of District Lodge 66 of the I.A.M. Babe was Vice-President of the Board for the La Crosse Union Herald and he was an Executive Board member of the La Crosse A.F. of L.-C.I.O. Council. He also served as a member of the Mayor's Council For The Working Poor Committee and was a member of the Wisconsin Senior Citizens Council. Babe was a past Labor Day Parade Marshall and served as the Labor Representative of the La Crosse United Way.
Babe is survived by his partner in life, Mary Vauk; two daughters, Cynthia Harnish of Oshkosh, Wis. and Beth Harnish of La Crosse; two sons, Thomas and his wife, Sherry Holt of La Crosse and John and his wife, Kim of Coon Valley, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Robby Harnish, Carlie and Jared Harnish, Shaena and Zachary Friedman and Chaun and Jake Hoff; special friends, Ron and Carla Vauk and their children, Sarah and Kari of Spicer, Minn.; his former wife, Lorraine Harnish of La Crosse; a sister, Gloria (Roland ``Babe'') Rieber of La Crosse; a brother, James (Dorothy) Harnisch of Onalaska, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Reca Harnish of Marshalltown, Iowa and his pet dog, Jo-Jo. He was preceded in death by a sister, Farold Norton and a brother, Vernon Harnish.
Babe is remembered for his wonderful stories, his laughter, his smile and his genuine compassion for people.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Ted A. Dewald will officiate. Burial with Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 595, will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, memorials be directed to the Gundersen Lutheran Hospice Program or to the American Cancer Society.

WHITTIER, Calif. - Ethel Pierce, 90, of Whittier, Calif., died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at the Specialty Hospital in La Mirada, Calif. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the White Funeral Home, Tomah. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Tomah.
