Debbie McKenzie
STOUGHTON, Wis. - Debbie (Joni) McKenzie, 41, died on Sunday morning, Aug. 16, 1998, at the Meriter Park Hospital in Madison. She was born on Feb. 24, 1957, in Oshkosh, Wis., the daughter of Willis and Gloria (Kralapp) Johnson. She was the consummate big sister to her younger brothers Bruce and Scott. She graduated from Appleton West High School in 1975. She received a degree in public health from UW-La Crosse in 1983. It was there, between visits to the ``ozone'' and the planetarium, that she first cast her spell on her future husband. Debbie and ``Mike'' McKenzie were married in 1984. Their friendship and love grew every day they were together.
Conor Michael was born in 1986, followed by Kelsey Marie in 1988, and Morgan Beth in 1989. Her family was the most important thing in her life, and she was proud of her kids.
Despite being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, Joni continued to embrace life to the fullest. Her spirit, energy and love were evident in everything she did. She was always a fulltime mom. She loved her current job in information technology as a contractor with the state of Wisconsin, especially because of the people she worked with and being able to have lunch with Mike. She still made time to volunteer as a Brownie leader and at the kids' school. She tried to attend every school and sporting event that her kids (or husband) participated in.
Joni inherited her love of reading from her mom, and it was not unusual to find books in three different rooms that she was reading at the same time. She treasured her garden, particularly the pond. She enjoyed sewing quilts for friends, dresses for her girls, and creating decorations for any holiday. She cherished going to the cottage, especially when she could go sailing with her dad.
She loved sports, whether it was playing basketball or softball, or cheering for the Badgers and Packers (especially when they beat the Vikings!).
Joni is survived by her husband, Mike; her son, Conor; her daughters, Kelsey and Morgan; her parents; her brothers and their families; and of course, the whole McKenzie clan.
We will treasure her smile, laughter and spirit forever.
Funeral services for Joni McKenzie will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 18, 1998, at the First Lutheran Church, 310 East Washington Ave., Stoughton. Reverend James Schwarz will officiate. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services today.
Her family wishes to thank everyone for their support and love in this difficult time. They extend a special thanks to the Physicians Plus Oncology staff for everything they have done for Joni the last several years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Joni McKenzie Memorial Fund. The Olson-Holzhuter-Cress Funeral Home, Stoughton, is assisting the family.
May the road rise to meet you;
May the wind be always at your back;
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
May the rain fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

(Old Irish Blessing)
