Willard Temby
LITTLETON, Colo. - Willard Temby, 71, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, in a Littleton Hospital. He was born May 20, 1927 in Dodgeville, Wis. to Luman and Leona Temby. He married Dorothy Shoger in La Crosse on July 3, 1954. He is survived by his wife, three sons, one daughter, ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two brothers and a sister. Funeral will be in Littleton, Colo.
Wayne D. Huntzicker
CASHTON, Wis. - Wayne D. Huntzicker, 78, of Cashton, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at the Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. He was born June 25, 1920, in Melvina, Wis. to Clarence and Millie (Erickson) Huntzicker. Wayne was united in marriage to Norma Jewell, May 15, 1946, in the St. John's Lutheran Parsonage in Sparta.
Wayne lived in the Melvina area most of his life and became a very integral part of the community. Being an auctioneer since 1951, he was well known around the area and was affiliated with the National Auctioneers Association and was a past president of the Wisconsin Auctioneers Association. An avid horse lover, he became one of the charter members of the Western Saddle Club located just down the road from his farm. The time he did spend away he served in the military and with that became a member of the American Legion Gunwald-Overgaurd Post #445. Closer to home, however, Wayne was well known on his mail route, a position he held from 1953-1980 and also in his community surrounding him, contributing time and energy to other organizations including the Cashton Board of Education, the Sparta Coop Oil Board, Mount Hope Cemetery Association in Sparta and his church, Trinity Lutheran of Cashton. Wayne was an active community member and a devoted family man.
Wayne leaves in his passing, his wife, Norma; two children, David (Christine) Huntzicker of Melvina and Lucy (Kent) Vaaler of Cashton; one sister, Faye Homstad of Cashton and five grandchildren, Michael (Brenda) Huntzicker, Steven Huntzicker, Mark Huntzicker, Elizabeth Vaaler and Jane Vaaler. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Jim Homstad.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at 11 a.m. from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cashton. Pastor Gregory Geier will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Sparta. Relatives and friends may call at the Torkelson Funeral Chapel in Cashton on Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, from 6-9 p.m. They may also call on the day of the services at the church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.
Marion E. Faas
Marion E. Faas, 86, of La Crosse, died on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center. She was born in La Crosse on March 14, 1912, to Henry and Elizabeth (Hettinger) Howly. She married Roy T. ``Mike'' Faas on Nov. 15, 1930, in La Crosse. She preceded her in death on May 13, 1990. Marion was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church where she was also a member of the St. Ann's Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the Navy Mother's and the Webster School Homemakers.
She is survived by five sons, Richard (Clare) of West Salem, Ronald (Joan) of Harford City, Ind., Michael (Jeannette) of Onalaska, Wis., David (Terri) of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Thomas (Donna) of Gainesville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Sutherland of Marshalltown, Iowa; and two brothers, Fred ``Fritz'' (Eileen) Howly and Gene (Bernadine) Howly, both of La Crosse. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Howly; a sister, Bernice Meyer; and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Faas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Rev. Lawrence B. Berger officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Monday form 10 a.m. until departing for church. A Prayer Service will be recited Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Frances M. Walsted
HIXTON, Wis. - Frances M. Walsted, 66, of Hixton, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at her home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hixton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Trinity Rest Cemetery, Hixton. Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton and also one hour prior to services at the church.

ALMA, Wis. - Marie A. Gleiter, 69, of Alma, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Oakview Care Center in Durand, Wis. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. Burial will be in the Mill Creek Cemetery, rural Alma. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Stohr-Hagen-Wozney Funeral Home in Alma, where there will be an 8:30 p.m. prayer service. Friends may also call from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the church.
William E. Schmidt
STODDARD, Wis. - William E. Schmidt, 57, of Stoddard, Wis., died on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998. He was born in La Crosse on June 17, 1941, to Erwin and Laurayne (Gavin) Schmidt. Bill was a 1959 graduate of Aquinas High School. He married Susan Swancutt on Sept. 5, 1970, in the Basilica of St. Mary's in Minneapolis, Minn. Bill was a 32 year veteran of the La Crosse Police. He joined the force on May 25, 1966, and was promoted to detective in 1973. He was promoted to sergeant in 1975, and became captain in 1988. He was appointed interim chief of police in 1992, and then assistant chief of police in 1994. Bill also taught police science courses at WWTC.
He is survived by his wife, Susie; two sisters, Sandra (Thomas) Besl of Melrose, Wis. and Sharon (John) Honeck of La Crosse; three brothers, Michael of La Crosse, Charles (Sandra) of La Crosse and Laurence (Janet) of St. Louis, Mo.; his nieces and nephews, Kim, Kelly, Kari, Kristi, Tom, Matt, Amy, Derek, Jonathan, Steven, Lisa, John, Beth, Debbie, Tony, Derek, Kam-Lin, Mark, Diana and Laura. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman with Rev. Anthony J. Wolf officiating. Entombment will be in the St. Joseph Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 12 noon and then at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman from 1 p.m. until the time of services.
Bill will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Helen Kerska
COON VALLEY, Wis. - Helen Kerska, 81, of Coon Valley, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born in rural Hillsboro on Feb. 18, 1917, to Jerry and Mary (Langer) Pesik. She married Emil Kerska in Hillsboro on May 18, 1937. The couple farmed in Bohemian Valley until 1972 when they retired and moved to the village of Coon Valley.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Kerska of West Allis; one sister, Mary Pesik of West Salem; two sisters-in-law, Anna Kerska of Coon Valley and Albina Sedevie of La Crosse and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil on Aug. 25, 1984; one brother, Emil Pesik; two brothers-in-law, Edward Kerska and Joseph Sedevie; and a sister-in-law, Mary Rediske.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at 11 a.m. at First Portland Evangelical Lutheran Church, on County Hwy. X, rural Cashton. Rev. Dennis Kempf will officiate with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the Seland Funeral Chapel in Coon Valley Monday evening, Nov. 30, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Immediately following the burial, friends and family are invited to a lunch fellowship at the Coon Valley Village Hall.
Mrs. Mary C. Johnson
JANESVILLE, Wis. - Mrs. Mary C. Johnson, 85, of 1905 S. Chatham St., passed away early Thursday evening, Nov. 26, 1998, at her home. She was born June 5, 1913, in Vernon County, Wis., the daughter of the late Gjert and Anna (Hatlan) Larson. On Feb. 13, 1937, she married Theodore M. Johnson in Waukon, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 1989. Mary and Ted lived in the Viroqua area for many years, where she was employed as a Nursing Assistant at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. In 1979, they moved to Janesville. Mary was a member of First Lutheran Church, Janesville, and was a former member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Viroqua. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, the Sons of Norway Nordland Lodge, and was a member of the Eunice Circle, the Sewing Group, and a very active volunteer at First Lutheran Church. She always was giving of her time when needed, whether it be with the Rummage Sales, Holiday Festival, or assisting in preparing desserts for the Rock Co. 4-H Fair! Mary will be remembered by her family and friends as a most generous person, no matter what the need was!
She is survived by her daughter, Janet (Tilford ``Paul'') Paulsrud of Janesville; her two granddaughters, Renee (Mark) Dooman and Patsy Paulsrud, both of Janesville; her sister, Freida (Stanley) Baltes of Middleton, Wis.; nieces, nephews, and many, many friends. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Anna Yanske, Alida Young, Gusta Benson and Josie Gulick; and by six brothers, Carl Larson, Sigert Larson, Gilbert Larson, Gayhard Larson, Harold Larson and a brother who died at birth.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Viroqua, Wis. with Rev. Harold Kromrey officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday afternoon from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Whitcomb Funeral Home, 220 S. Academy St., or from 12 p.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. on Monday at the church in Viroqua.
William ``Billy'' Levi Best
LA CROSSE, Wis./VIROQUA, Wis. - William ``Billy'' Levi Best, 69, of 2838 South 22nd St., in La Crosse, formerly of Viroqua, died Friday morning, Nov. 27, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born on July 25, 1929, in Viroqua to Ira and Marye Virginia (Strange) Best. He attended Viroqua High School and from 1946 until 1950 served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy. In 1950, he married Marilyn Dake and they were later divorced. For several years he was self employed as a mechanic and was a carpenter. He had also owned and operated the Golden Garter on Third St. and Sloppy's on Pearl St. In recent years he was employed by Kwik Trip on Losey. Billy was an avid motorcyclist and in 1979 was severely burned when his cycle's gas tank caught fire. He enjoyed playing the mandolin and the five string banjo.
Billy is survived by one daughter, Shelly (Richard) Gorsett; three sons, Timothy Best, Stuart Best and Terry (Anne) Best, all of La Crosse; three grandchildren, Justin, Stephen and Darcy Best; one sister, Anna Grace (Cecil) Owen of Viroqua; his former wife, Marilyn Best of La Crosse; other relatives and many friends. His family wishes to acknowledge the support he has had from two special friends, Jerry ``Ballon'' Martell and Paul ``Freddie'' Averill.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua with Pastor Ron Ahlgren officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. on Monday.
