Mary Isabelle Underhill
Mary Isabelle Underhill, 81, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at the St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec. 17, 1916, in Harmony, Minn., to Robert Eugene ``Gene'' and Minnie (McDermont) Underhill. Mary had taught economics in Spring Green, Wis., and retired as the home economy director for the Wisconsin Gas Co., in Milwaukee. After her retirement, she moved to the La Crosse area to be closer to her family.
Mary is survived by her brother, Robert E. and his wife, Dorothy of La Crosse; a sister-in-law, Mae E. Underhill of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews, Jeffery (Gabrielle) Underhill of Floyd, Va., Jeanne (Albert) Funk of Helena, Mont., Mary Ann (Dickie) Grubbs of Onalaska, William T. (Jacqueline) Underhill of Dresbach, Minn., Jane (Ron) Schritz of Apache Junction, Ariz., Barbara (Daniel) Kniefl of Mesa, Ariz., Judy Johnson of Holmen, Patricia (Ron) Hausel of Guthrie, Okla., Carol (Steve) Cleary of La Crosse, Theresa (Don) Gerdes of Brice Prairie, Katherine Sarazin of Onalaska and Jerry Underhill of Apache Junction, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Paul B. Underhill and William Underhill; and a nephew, Paul M. Underhill.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of St. Joseph's Care Center, 2902 East Ave. So., La Crosse. The Reverends Thomas Smith, Joseph Rafacz and Joseph Frisch will concelebrate, with burial to be in the Crucifixion Cemetery, La Crescent, Minn. Friends may call at the St. Joseph Nursing Home chapel on Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials are requested to St. Pius X Catholic Church. The Blaschke Funeral Home, La Crosse, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Harold K. Hegland
ONALASKA, Wis. - Harold K. Hegland, 84, of Onalaska, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born Aug. 6, 1914, in Caledonia, Minn., to Henry and Cora (Schauble) Hegland. A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 30, 1940, and was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant on Aug. 17, 1945.
He married Jean Hilda Poulter on June 20, 1945, at All Saints Church, Edmonton, London, England.
He was employed as a clerk-crew caller from September, 1945 to Aug. 31, 1976, by the Burlington Northern Railroad, La Crosse. He was a 50-year member of the Transportation, Communications Union, and a 35-year member of American Legion Post 336, Onalaska.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Ronald (Marlene) Hegland of White Lake, Mich.; step-grandsons Gary and Craig Boyd; nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Irene Hegland of Ettrick. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Sheila Jean; a brother, Arland Hegland; infant half brother, Marvin Erickson; and half sister Ruth M. Olson.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Onalaska. The Reverend Fred Ohlrogge will officiate and burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery, Houston, Minn. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska, on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Jerome B. Rotering Sr.
ARCADIA, Wis. - Jerome B. Rotering Sr., 75, of Arcadia, died on Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Hospital, Arcadia. He was born on Sept. 22, 1923, in the town of Glencoe, to Joseph and Gertrude (Pronschinske) Rotering. Jerome had farmed on the farm of his birth. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Jerome married Evelyn Pierzina on June 17, 1946, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Arcadia.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Arcadia; four sons, Jerry (Lorraine Killian) Rotering of Cochrane, Thomas (Betty) Rotering of Fountain City, Joseph (Brenda Killian) Rotering of Arcadia and James (Pamela) Rotering of Cochrane; four daughters, Dorothy (James) Marsolek, Marlene Rotering, Joanne Rotering and Maria Rotering, all of Arcadia; two brothers, Sylvester (Nona) Rotering of Winona, Minn., and Mathias (Genevieve) Rotering of Independence; four sisters, Bernetta Haines of Arcadia, Marian (William) Cavanaugh Sr. of St. Charles, Ill., Florence (William) Nelson Sr. of Winona, Minn., and Sister Josette Rotering of Milwaukee; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee, with the Rev. Richard Dickman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, today from 4 to 9 p..m., where there will be a 7:30 p.m. rosary and an 8 p.m. prayer service. They may also call on Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Casketbearers will be Jerry, Tom, Joe and Jim Rotering, Steve Marsolek, Pat Rotering and Chuck Rotering.
Stanley J. Ronke
Stanley J. Ronke, 76, born Dec. 9, 1921, in the town of Burns, La Crosse County, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, after a prolonged illness. He is survived by a brother, Norman of Las Vegas, and a sister, Patricia Temp of La Crosse. Graveside services will be Friday in Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, Calif.
Helen A. Dahle
Helen A. Dahle, 77, of La Crosse, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. She was born Jan. 22, 1921, in La Crosse, to John and Mary (Leske) Prise. She married Carston Dahle in July, 1941.
Helen was a bookkeeper for the La Crosse Chamber of Commerce and for the town of Campbell.
In addition to her husband, Carston, she is survived by a son, Dan (Cheryl) Dahle of La Crosse; by two sisters, Rita (Jack) O'Donnell of Madison, Wis., and Hazel Williams of Mission Viego, Calif.; by two brothers, Erwin Prise of New York City and Charles (Carol) Prise of La Crosse; by two grandchildren, Chad and Danielle Dahle; and by many loving nieces and nephews. Three sisters preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Nov. 20 at noon at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Sixth and Division streets. The Reverend Rachel Mithelman will officiate.
Friends may call at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or to Gundersen Lutheran Dialysis Department.
The Dickinson Family Funeral Homes and Crematory are assisting the family with arrangements.
Conrad J. Andre
ARCADIA, Wis. - Conrad J. Andre, 76, of Arcadia, Wis., died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home in Arcadia.
He was born April 27, 1922, in North Creek, town of Arcadia, to John and Christina (Lisowski) Andre. He married Marian Ressel in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Arcadia.
Conrad farmed his entire life and was also a carpenter. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Holy Name Society and American Legion Post #17.
He is survived by his wife, Marian Andre of Arcadia; one daughter, Sandy (Francis) Rotering of Aledo, Texas; two sons, James Andre of Arcadia and Timothy (Cindy) Andre of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren, Brook, Aubre and Lily Rotering, and Missy and Timothy Andre Jr.; and one sister, Marcella (Louis) Ressel of Mondovi.
Conrad was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joseph, George and Edward; and four sisters, Frances Burt, Theresa Lampe, Eleanor Lisowski and Mary Konter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Arcadia, with Rev. Raymond Pedretti officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, North Creek, Wis.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Wozney Funeral Home, Arcadia, where there will be rosaries at 7:30 and 8 p.m. Friends may also call from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Serving as casketbearers will be Louis Ressel Jr., Richard Lampe, Daniel Andre, Dale Brom, Russel Kujak, and Willis Breska. Honorary casketbearers will be Rory Kujak, Kenny Amundson, Jon Bisek, Adolph Chitko, Jerome Rumpel, Benny Ressel, Allen Halverson and Rollie Sonsalla.

VIROQUA, Wis. - Irene O'Connor, 91, of Viroqua, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at the Vernon Bethel Home in Viroqua. Funeral services will be announced by Thorson Funeral Home of Viroqua.
La Verne F. Lee
La Verne F. Lee, 69, of La Crosse, died on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse.
Lillian D. Wehrs
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Lillian D. Wehrs, 90, of West Salem, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem.
She was born Feb. 15, 1908, in Pleasant Valley, La Crosse County to Charles and Minnie (Brandt) Novak. On Aug. 25, 1925, she married Edward H. Wehrs in Winona, Minn. and he preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 1987. Lillian was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in West Salem and the church ladies aid. She was a very active member who held many offices of the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 Auxiliary in West Salem. Lillian was also a charter member of the West Salem Navy Mothers.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Shirley Wehrs of West Salem; two grandchildren, Bruce (Judy) Wehrs of West Salem and Susan (Michael) Torris of Onalaska; four great-grandchildren, Dustin and Derek Wehrs and Tiffany and Brent Torris; a brother-in-law, Harry (Dorothy) Wehrs of West Salem; and a special godchild, Cindy (George Jr.) of Winona, Minn. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronald; and a sister, Florence Stange.
Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. from Christ Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Rev. Paul R. Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery, West Salem.
