Ruth M. Hauser
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Ruth M. Hauser, 80, of West Salem, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born Jan. 10, 1918, in West Salem, to Edward and Elizabeth (Hausman) Ender. On Aug. 30, 1940, she was married to Wilbur A. Hauser in the West Salem Presbyterian Church Parsonage, by Rev. John Fitz. Ruth was a longtime member of the West Salem Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge #1920 of La Crosse.
Survivors include her husband, Wilbur; a son, Kenneth (Jenni) Hauser of West Salem; two daughters, Linda (Ed) Lusk of West Salem and Susan Anderson of Holmen; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Mitchell of La Crosse; one brother, Richard (Charlotte) Ender of West Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Hauser; a sister, Bernice Percick; four brothers, Walter, Rudolph, Martin and LeRoy Ender; and a son-in-law, Jerome Anderson.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. from West Salem Presbyterian Church, 134 E. Hamilton St. Rev. Jonathan V. Eastman will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. Friends may call at the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.; and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the West Salem Presbyterian Church.
Pernell A. Holliday
Pernell A. Holliday, 89, of La Crosse, died on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at the Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home. She was born on Nov. 28, 1908, in La Crosse, to Edwin and Matilda (Frappier) Kenyon. She married John R. Smith on Feb. 12, 1929, in La Crosse. He died on Jan. 18, 1957. On May 25, 1963, she married Irvin C. Holliday in La Crosse. He died on Nov. 23, 1991. Pernell worked at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse for many years, and retired in 1973.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Robert) McCoy and Marilyn (Raymond) Osweiler, both of La Crosse; four sons, Robert ``Bud'' (Janine) Smith of Holmen, Wis., Richard (Marilyn) Smith and Donald (Kay) Smith, both of La Crosse, and David (Bonnie) Smith of Trempealeau, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Joan (Mike) Fleming of Minnetonka, Minn.; a stepson, Charles (Judy) Holliday of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 35 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, a son, three grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at St. James the Less Catholic Church. The Rev. Roger Scheckel will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, Riverland Chapter, La Crosse, Wis.

Kenneth D. Carlson
PEORIA, Ill. - Kenneth D. Carlson, 62, of 919 W. Oakview Drive, Peoria, Ill., died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center.
Born Jan. 29, 1936, in La Crosse, to Arnold and Erna Hugo Carlson, he married Diana G. Cope on Aug. 2, 1968, in Peoria.
He is survived by his wife; brothers Floyd (Cynthia) of La Crosse, Maynard (Doris) of West Salem, Earl (Tomi) of West Salem, and William (Debra) of Coon Valley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clarence.
He graduated from West Salem High School in 1954. He served with the Army Chemical Corps for two years. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1958 and his doctorate in 1966, in chemistry, from the University of Wisconsin.
He was a research chemist at the National Center for Agriculture Utilization Research for 30 years, retiring in 1997.
He was associate editor of the Journal of the American Oil Chemists' Society and president of the American Chemical Society in 1976.
He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Peoria.
Services were held in Peoria on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Memorials may be made to his church or to any charity.
Shirley Ann Bott
Shirley Ann Bott, 63, of La Crosse, died on Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center. She was born Oct. 11, 1935, in La Crosse, to Edwin and Leona (Kessler) Johnson. She graduated from Aquinas High School in 1953. She married Robert Bott on Oct. 8, 1955. He preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1997.
She is survived by a daughter, Vicki Bott of Ames, Iowa; by four sons, Robert (Shawn) Bott of La Crosse, Michael (Joni) Bott of West Salem, Joseph (Sandy) Bott of Holmen and John (Cheryl) Bott of Watertown, Wis.; by two sisters, Frances (Joseph) Savant and Delores (LeRoy) Graff, of La Crosse; by three brothers, Richard (Dorothy) Johnson, William (Kay) Johnson, and Robert (Millie) Johnson, all of La Crosse; by a former daughter-in-law, Diane Bott, of Onalaska; and by ten grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister, Helen.
A memorial Mass will be conducted at St. James the Less Catholic Church on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Roger Scheckel will officiate. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the service.

Otto Monson
VIROQUA, Wis. - Otto Monson, 85, formerly of 711 Independence St., in Viroqua, died on Tuesday morning, Nov. 24, 1998, at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua, where he had been a resident since July 12, 1996. He was born in the town of Kickapoo in Vernon County on May 23, 1913, to Martin and Katrina (Jackson) Monson. He was baptized at the South Kickapoo Lutheran Church and confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. On Feb. 17, 1937, he married Agnes Christianson at the Westby Coon Prairie Parsonage. They farmed at rural Readstown and Westby for 11 years. He then worked for Knutson Surge and Berg Roofing in Viroqua until 1953, when they moved to Red Granite. They later moved to Berlin and the Waupun area, where he worked for the Berlin Seating Company. In 1982, they retired to Viroqua. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Viroqua Eagles Aerie No. 2707.
Otto is survived by his wife, Agnes, also a resident of Vernon Manor; one sister, Anna (Harland) Peterson of Readstown; a special niece, Betty Lou (Gene) Tyler of Holmen; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Livingston of La Crosse and Catherine (Martin) Egstad of Evansville; and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Kelma Anderson, Barbara Stevlingson, Maline Monson, Myrtle Hofslien, Nelia Stevlingson, and Alma Severson; two brothers, Adolph and Orvie Monson; and a brother-in-law, John Livingston.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua, with Pastor Ken Melby officiating. Burial will be in Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services on Saturday. The family suggests memorials to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church TV broadcast. Bertha Marie Larson
VIROQUA, Wis. - Bertha Marie Larson, 96, of Viroqua, and formerly of Readstown, died on Tuesday morning, Nov. 24, 1998, at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua. She was born on Aug. 16, 1902, in Readstown, to Lewis and Flora (Hall) Larson. Marie was a member of the Virqoua Church of Christ and lived in the Vernon County area until becoming a resident of the nursing home.
She is survived by nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Ray, Elden and Lawrence Larson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, in the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, with Pastor Ron Ahlgren officiating. Burial will be in the Readstown Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the time of service on Friday. The family suggests memorials to the Vernon Manor Activity Department.
Zelma M. Major
LA FARGE, Wis. - Zelma M. Major, 95, of La Farge, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. She was born July 16, 1903, in the town of Stark, Vernon County, Wis., to Justice and Almeda (Orrison) Fulmer. She graduated from La Farge High School and also graduated from Vernon County Normal School at Viroqua. Zelma taught in country schools in the La Farge area. On Oct. 2, 1928, she married Charles Fred Major in the Methodist parsonage in Viroqua. They lived in Michigan and Ohio and returned to La Farge in 1932. They owned and operated a feed and machinery business in which Zelma was very active. She was a member of the La Farge United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She also taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by one daughter, Karlene (Winfred) Bold of Janesville, Wis.; one daughter-in-law, Avanelle Major of La Farge; four grandchildren, JoEllen (Tom) Soerens of St. Charles, Ill., Elaine (Mark) Hines of Eagle River, Alaska, Charles (Zoe) Major of St. Paul, Minn., and Alan (Linda) Major of Pewaukee, Wis.; eight great-grandchildren, Brandon, Kyle, and Andrea Soerens, Erik, and Adam Gabrielson, and Zachary, Tatum, and Forrest Major; two nieces, Kathleen (Merval) Strang of Viroqua and Helen Fulmer of Wausau; one nephew, Jim (Sue) Major of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles on March 28, 1979; her son, Fredrick Major on April 6, 1989; one sister, Valeria Fulmer; and three brothers, Lloyd, Lester and Otto Fulmer.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the La Farge United Methodist Church, with Pastor Julio Alvarado and Pastor Paul Birkedal officiating. Burial will be in the Bear Creek Cemetery, rural La Farge. Friends may call at the Seland Funeral Home, La Farge, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m.; and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
