Alida H. Loken Christianson
BLAIR/BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Alida H. Loken Christianson, age 99, of Black River Falls, Wis., and formerly of Blair, Wis., passed away Thursday evening, September 18, 1997 (30 days short of her 100th birthday), at Family Heritage Care Center in Black River Falls, where she had resided (by her own decision) since January of 1993.
Alida was born October 17, 1897, to Peter and Signe (Knutson) Heiberg in old Camp Eleven near Pray, Jackson County, Wis. She was schooled and grew up in Superior-Duluth, where her family had moved at the turn of the century.
On September 26, 1921, she married Oscar Loken of Blair, Wis., and through the years assisted him in his meat market businesses in Independence, York and Northfield. In 1931, they took over the Finn Farm south of Taylor and remained there until early 1945, when they returned to the present farm in rural Blair, where Oscar died in March of 1953.
Three Loken sons survive their parents, Ralph (Known as Rol) of Black River Falls, Earl (Betty) of Ettrick and Don (Lorraine) of Blair. Alida's Heiberg siblings, two sisters and two brothers, preceded her in death.
In June of 1959, Alida married Oscar Christianson of Black River Falls, and she resided their until her death. Oscar passed away in 1964.
During her business years, Alida was active in women's study and garden clubs, in the American Legion Auxiliary, in amateur theatricals and in music, which she loved all her life: as a soloist, choir member and director, as church organist and pianist, as well as guitarist in a string band. She also ran a restaurant in York.
During her farming years, Alida was busy with rural school and church activities, active in county Homemakers club/s and chorus; she organized her local community and 4-H clubs. She became known for her vegetable and flower gardens.
During her last decades, she devoted time to senior activities and her church groups, and was a regular volunteer at the local nursing homes for a number of years. She continued her lifelong interests in music, reading, sewing, quilting, handiwork and tending her flowers. She loved to travel.
Besides the Loken sons and their wives, Alida is survived by five grandchildren, Duane (Pam) Loken of Blair, Lori (Tim) Holesinger of Farmington, N.M., Lisa (Brent) Janzen of Blair, Ron (Jan) Loken and Vicky Stellflue of Ettrick. There are five great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Loken and Mary Beth Stellflue of Ettrick, Nicole Loken of Holmen, Andrew and Allison Loken of Blair. There is one great-great-grandchild, Essence Armani Loken of Holmen; as well as nieces and nephews in Superior, Wis., and Clinton, Ill., area, with numbers of Heiberg and Knutson cousins throughout the U.S.A. and Canada.
Despite her advanced years, Alida remained lucid to the end. Her self-effacing humor, her tolerance and consideration, and her gentleness will be deeply missed. May she rest in peace.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, September 22, 1997, in the First Lutheran Church with burial in the Rest Haven Cemetery both in Blair, Wis. Revs. John Twiton and Kevin Jones will officiate.
