William `Bill' F. Morrison
MAUSTON, Wis. - William ``Bill'' F. Morrison, 66, of Mauston, died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at his residence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Elroy United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Rose Cemetery, rural Mauston. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Picha Funeral Home, Elroy; and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Esther M. Buttke
ALMA CENTER, Wis. - Esther M. Buttke, 86, died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997 in the Pine View Nursing Home, Black River Falls. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, in the Grace Lutheran Church, with burial in the East Lawn Cemetery, both in Alma Center. Friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton; and also one hour before services Tuesday at the church.
Frances M. Kahle
Frances M. Kahle, age 95, of La Crosse, died Sept. 19, 1997 in St. Joseph's Nursing Home.
She was born July 10, 1902 in La Crosse to Joseph and Julia (Ikert) Gautsch. She married John Kahle Oct. 17, 1933, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, La Crosse. She was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity, and sang in the church choir until she was almost 90 years old. She was also a member of the La Crosse Diocesan Choir and a member of the Catholic Daughters. Fran was a devoted mother and grandmother and took special joy in her great-grandchildren. Her wit and wisdom will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Dr. Paul) Lyga of La Crosse; one son, Jack (Susan) Kahle of Foster City, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Tony (Karen) Lyga, Tom (Jean) Lyga, Jane (Kenny) Jones, Sam Lyga, Nancy (Bob) Flottmeyer, Patty Lyga and her fiance, Mike English, and Amy Lyga; five great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Trevor, Alison, Jessica, and Rebecca. She is further survived by three sisters, Laurie Fuchsteiner of Coon Valley, Wis., Gertrude Herlitzka of La Crosse, and Rosemary Bentzen of La Crosse; one brother, Len (Leone) Gautsch of La Crosse; and one sister-in-law, Vi Gautsch of La Crosse; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John on Aug. 26, 1985; three brothers, Paul, Julius, and George; and one sister, Louise Fuchs.
A Mass of Christian Burial and a Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 S. 13th St. Rev. Larry Berger will officiate with burial in the Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends and family may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials preferred to the Aquinas Foundation and Holy Trinity Foundation. The Blaschke Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Roma Dell Crandall
TUCSON, Ariz. - Roma Dell Crandall, 65, of Tucson, Ariz., and formerly of St. Paul, Minn., Chicago, Ill., and La Crosse, Wis., died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris P.; her parents, Emil and Ruby Benson; and a brother, Max Benson.
She is survived by her children, Larry (Barbara) Himli of St. Paul, Minn., Robert (Kathy) Himli of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Linnea (Alan) Oty of Albuquerque, N.M., and Morris P. (Marissa) Crandall of St. Paul, Minn.; her stepsons, Leroy Crandall of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mike (Anita) Crandall of La Crosse; her sisters, Linnea Shinault, Jarda (Bud) Parrish and Jane (Phil) Hengel, all of La Crosse; sisters-in-law, Ethel Graham of Chicago and Violet Crandall of La Crosse; many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
To all of you who touched Roma's life, we thank you for your friendship, your laughter and the time you shared with our Mom.
There was a private celebration on Mount Lemmon at Tucson.

Ruth Stalsberg
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Ruth M. Stalsberg, 70, of West Salem, died Saturday, September 20, 1997, at the home of her sister, Shirley, in Bangor.
She was born June 4, 1927 in Fish Creek Valley, La Crosse County, to Sidney and Mabel (Knudtson) Knutson. She married Gerhard ``Shorty'' Stalsberg on October 18, 1946 in La Crosse. Ruth was employed at the West Salem High School for many years up until the time of her death. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51, Auxiliary both in West Salem.
Ruth's favorite past-time and hobby was her needle work.
Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn (Jim) Schoolmeesters of Harris, Minn.; one son, Bruce (Brenda) Stalsberg of Fairfax, Virg.; five grandchildren, Lynnette (Chad) Buehring and Jamie Schoolmeesters, Lee Emery, Sarah and Alston Stalsberg; one sister, Shirley (Bob) Horstman of Bangor; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerhard ``Shorty'' on May 30, 1987 and four brothers, Joseph, George, Orville, and Robert Knutson.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 23, 1997 at 1:30 p.m. from Our Savior's Lutheran Church, West Salem. Rev. J. David Bersagel will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. Friends may call at the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, on Monday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to Franciscan-Skemp Hospice and the American Cancer Society, Wis. Division.
Iva Mae Armoto
VIROQUA/VICTORY, Wis. - Iva Mae Armoto, age 72, of Viroqua, and formerly of Victory, died on Friday afternoon, September 19, 1997 at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua.
She was born to Walter and Cora (Pitzenburger) Shaw in Wauzeka on June 14, 1925. She married James Armoto, Jr. on October 12, 1941 and he died on October 26, 1965. She worked several years at Sisters of Charity Home in Dubuque, Iowa as a nursing assistant. The past five years she has made her home with her daughter, Bonnie in Viroqua.
She is survived by three sons, David (Carol) Armoto, of Prairie du Chien, James (Sandra) Armoto of Wausau, John (Carolyn) Armoto of Indianapolis, Ind.; three daughters, Bonnie (Darold ``Fred'') Rolff of Viroqua, Barbara (Bill) Kaufman of Bloomington, Ill., Judith (Ray) Paggi of Wolfe City, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers, James (Helen) Shaw of Excelsior, Walter (Bonnie) Shaw of Juneau, Ark., Bernard (Joanne) Shaw of Juneau, Alaska; three sisters, Edna Greene, Alma Engelkins, of Thompson, Ill., Shirley (Ambrose) Daniels of Amarillo, Texas; and a special friend, Erma Overbo, of Viroqua, her caregiver.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a special companion, Maynard Stanton, one son, Nicholas Dean Armoto, one brother, George Shaw, one granddaughter, Patricia Ann Rolff, one grandson, William D. Kaufman, one great-granddaughter, Katherine Mae Christianson, and two brothers-in-law, Bruce Greene and Jake Engelkins.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 1997 at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Burial will be in the Victory Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua and also on Wednesday morning after 8 a.m.
Mary A. Miller
ONALASKA, Wis. - Mary A. Miller, 33, of Onalaska, died on Friday, September 19, 1997 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born in La Crosse on November 8, 1963 to Harold and Irene Lowery. She married Roy J. Miller, Jr. on July 7, 1990 in La Crosse.
Mary is survived by her husband; one daughter, Christa Mason of Terre Haute, Ind.; two sons, David Mason of Terre Haute, Ind., and Dustin Miller of Onalaska; two sisters, Alice (Larry) Myhre of La Crosse, and Susan Evenson of Viroqua; and three brothers, Robert Steele, Richard Steele, and Leonard Steele, all of La Crosse. She was preceded in death by one son, Corey Anthony Miller on June 8, 1993, and one sister, Rose Riel.
Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Tuesday, September 23, 1997 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. At Mary's request, there will be no funeral services. Her body will be cremated with burial to take place in Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date.
Moneta M. Bessinger
VIROQUA, Wis. - Moneta M. Bessinger, age 95, of Viroqua, formerly of Blue Earth, Minn., died Friday, September 19, 1997 at the Bethel Home in Viroqua.
She was born March 15, 1902 in Pilot Grove Township, Faribault County, Minnesota to Alfred and Charlotte (Sailor) Ogilvie. After graduation from Mankato Teacher's College she taught three years in rural Minnesota schools. On December 25, 1931 she married William Bessinger who preceded her in death on December 11, 1979. She worked as a secretary in her husband's family owned monument business in Blue Earth, Minn., until he retired and sold the business in the early 1950s. She enjoyed working with young people for many years as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Sunday School teacher. Her love of flowers and gardening led into her membership in the Blue Earth Garden Club which she enjoyed even after moving to Viroqua, Wis. in 1983. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Rebecca Circle, and helped with the Good Shepherd Quilters in Viroqua.
Moneta is survived by one son, Nial (Judy) Bessinger of Viroqua; two grandsons, Kory and Karl Bessinger, both of Orlando, Fla.; nieces; nephews; and several cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Paul Ogilvie; and a sister, Prudence Arndt.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 1997 at 2 p.m. in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Viroqua. Pastors Roger Hjelle and Stephanie Steiner will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Blue Earth, Minn. on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Tuesday after 1 p.m.
