Evelyn Boma
Evelyn Boma, of La Crosse, passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Center. She was born in La Crosse on March 26, 1908, to Herbert and Lucy Brown. She had graduated from Central High School and the La Crosse Normal School (UW-L). She taught elementary education in La Crosse. She married William S. ``Bill'' Boma, June 12, 1930. Evelyn resumed working in 1959, as the head jail matron when her husband was appointed Sheriff. She also served as the Bailiff for the La Crosse County Circuit Court, a position she held until her retirement. Evelyn belonged to several area clubs; she loved to collect dolls and hats; she also loved her flower garden and watching birds and deer.
She is survived by her son, William C. ``Bill'' Boma of La Crosse; four grandchildren, Rhonda (Kurt) Helgeson of Coon Valley, Barbara (Jay) Englehart of La Crosse, Susie Speigelmyer of Onalaska, William B. Boma of Onalaska; five great-grandchildren, Jake, Justin, Katie, Janelle, Joey and her special neighbors, the Brownell family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill in 1969. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, who enjoyed her entire family and her many friends.
Private family services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at the Blaschke Family Funeral Home, 401 West Ave. S. Rev. Bernard Mc Garty will officiate with burial in the Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. The family requests memorials to the Aquinas Schools Foundation or Blessed Sacrament Parish Ladies Organization.
Zeno `Edward' Legace
BLUFF SIDING, Wis. - Zeno ``Edward'' Lagace, 82, of Bluff Siding, Wis., died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in the emergency room at Community Memorial Hospital. He was born March 26, 1916, in Hamlin, Maine, to Edward and Elizabeth (Willet) Legassey. He married Hilda M. Lenz, March 4, 1946, in Hartford, Conn. She died March 11, 1993. He was employed at Watkins Products as a district field manager until 1971, then was employed by Community Memorial Hospital as an LPN until retirement. He was a member of St. Casimir's Catholic Parish, Winona Lion's Club and the American Legion Post #336 of Onalaska. He served in the U.S. Army W.W.II, battle campaigns include, Eastern Mandates, Southern Phillipines, Luzon and Ryukyus. His decorations include, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon, Air Medal, Purple Heart (twice) and Flying Cross Medal.
Zeno is survived by three daughters, Linda (James) Derrick, Porter Lake, Nova Scotia, Canada, Cynthia (Carl) Sjolander, Onalaska, Wis. and Gerrie Lagace, Bluff Siding, Wis.; one son, Edward (Ramona) Redig-Lagace, Fountain City, Wis.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gert Bosco, Waterbury, Conn., Harriet Gormley, Waterbury, Conn. and Lena Guy, Millinocket, Maine. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers and one sister.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Chapel. The American Legion Post #336 of Onalaska will conduct military rites at the funeral home. Reverend James W. Hennessy will officiate. Friends may call on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
L. Florence Zeisler
L. Florence Zeisler, 98, passed away after a short confinement at the Hillview Health Care Center, on Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, due to heart complications and other related illnesses. She was born on Nov. 30, 1899, in St. Joseph's Ridge, Wis., to Nicholas and Anna (Rutz) Arenz. She married Paul Zeisler in 1950, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 8, 1967. Florence graduated from the Grandview Hospital School of Nursing in 1923, and worked as a registered nurse. She was appointed superintendent of Grandview Hospital in 1925, and continued to serve in that capacity until her retirement in 1970. She also worked as an anesthetist for many years.
Florence is survived by a brother, Bernard (Frances) Arenz of Winona, Minn.; two sisters, Carolyn Fox of La Crosse and Sister Mary (Rose) Claudine Arenz, RSM, of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Irene Arenz of Sparta and Mary Lindrud Zeisler of La Crosse; two brothers-in-law, Robert Dunphy of Dubuque, Iowa, and Wenzel Bina of West Salem; and four step-grandchildren, Mark Tessman of Rockford, Ill., Wendy Stevens of Decorah, Iowa, Betsy Hayes of Arden Hills, Minn., and Lisa Nickerson of Albuquerque, N.M.
In addition to her husband, Paul, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Albert Arenz; two sisters, Katherine Dunphy and Georgina Bina; and a stepdaughter, Mary Zeisler Tessman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at 10 a.m. in the Marian Chapel of the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman, with Rev. Robert J. Cook officiating. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Bernard Arenz Jr., Eugene Arenz, Donald Bina, Robert Bina, Richard Fox and Robert Nolden. Entombment will be in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. A wake service will be held on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred in Florence's name.
Florence was a devoted aunt and friend to her many nieces and nephews and her step-grandchildren. She kept in touch with each of them and never failed to inquire about their well-being.
Donald D. Groth
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Donald D. Groth, 71, of West Salem, died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born April 13, 1927, in La Crosse, to Rheinhold and Amanda (Horman) Groth. On Sept. 30, 1950, he married LaVonne Gilbertson in La Crosse and she preceded him in death on July 2, 1986. Don owned and operated Coulee Farm Supply in West Salem for over 30 years until his retirement. He was presently working part time for Coulee News, also in West Salem. Don was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church in West Salem. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1254 of La Crosse; Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51, West Salem; and a past member of the West Salem Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include two children, Teri (Steven) Kirchner of Melrose and Gary (Cheryl) Groth of La Crosse; seven grandchildren, Heather (Dan) Gilster, Scott Kirchner, Joshua Kirchner, Kelli Groth, Kevin Groth, Susan McLean and James McLean; one brother, Roland ``Rum'' Groth of West Salem; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Alice Hundt of La Crosse. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois Bonsall; and a special friend, Delores Koss.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. from Christ Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Rev. Paul R. Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St. West Salem, today from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Travis J. Marx
SPARTA, Wis. - Travis J. Marx, newborn son of Ronald and Donna (Thomas) Marx, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Hilltop Cemetery, Ontario, Wis. He is survived by his parents; paternal grandmother, Irma Marx of Clinton, Iowa; and maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Beverly (Edward) Brown of Sparta. The Page-Smith Funeral Home, Sparta, is in charge of arrangements.
Annette E. Weingarten
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Annette E. Weingarten, 87, of West Salem, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at Bethany Riverside Nursing Facility, La Crosse.
She was born Nov. 2, 1911, in North Bend, Wis., to James D. and Ella (Johnson) McDonald. Annette was a 1930 graduate of West Salem High School and in 1934, she graduated from the Uiversity of Wisconsin-Stout. She taught home economics in Kaukauna, Wis., at the city vocational school for two years. Annette then worked for the University of Wisconsin agricultural extension as a home demonstration agent for 3 1/2 years in Green Lake County and 3 1/2 years in Winnebago County. She was also a home economist for Wisconsin Power and Light in Tomah for one year.
On Nov. 29, 1947, she married Armin J. ``Shorty'' Weingarten and together they owned and operated an IGA store in West Salem for many years, until they sold the business in 1973.
Annette was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Waves and held the commission of Lieutenant J.G. She served 2 1/2 years in Washington, D.C., as a barracks officer, until she was discharged in 1946. She was a member of Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51, West Salem.
Survivors include three nieces, Anne Schierl of Stevens Point, Wis., Mary (Michael) Mezera of Neenah, Wis., and Nancy McDonald of Madison, Wis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Shorty, on Feb. 7, 1991; two brothers, Robert and Lloyd; and one sister, Ruth.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., from the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem. Rev. Jonathan V. Eastman will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the West Salem School District.
Dorothy Stringham
Dorothy Stringham, 81, of La Crosse, passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998. She was born in La Crosse, Wis., on Oct. 14, 1917, to Harry and Lillian (Groth) Schultz. She married George Stringham on Nov. 25, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa. She worked for many years at Art-Market.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Roger) Sorokin of Indianapolis, Ind., and Vicki Stringham of La Crosse; three grandchildren, Timothy (Mari) Sorokin, Heather (Basil) Sorokin-Eleftheriou and Jason Sorokin; two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Amanda Sorokin; one brother, Harry (Betty) Schultz of La Crosse; one sister, Shirley (Dean) Briese of Largo, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Hazel Schultz of Onalaska; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Howard Schultz.
Memorial services will be held today, Nov. 10, 1998, at 1 p.m. in the Blaschke Funeral Home, 401 West Ave. So., La Crosse. The Reverend Ted DeWald will officiate, with burial to be at the Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends and family may call at the funeral home today from noon until the time of services.
Everett J. McHenry
Everett J. McHenry, 68, of La Crosse, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born in La Crosse on Feb. 10, 1930, to Everett M. and Genevieve (Chase) McHenry.
He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was retired from the Trane Company after 37 years.
He is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann (Larry) Bolstad, and four sons, Timothy (Bunnie), Brian, Kenneth and Shane, all of La Crosse; eight grandchildren, Tracy (Eric), Shelly, Tiffany, Erik, Courtney, Alysia, Hilary and Josh; and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Aundrea. He is preceded in death by one son, Kelly Joe; two brothers, Jack and Oscar; and one sister, Joyce.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at 10 a.m. at the Woodruff Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road, La Crosse. The Rev. Helen Johnson will officiate and family burial will be at the Catholic Cemetery on Thursday.
Family and friends may call at the Woodruff Funeral Home this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Military rites will be held by American Legion Post 52 at the Catholic Cemetery on Thursday.
