Irene Schinzel Welch
BRISTOL - Irene Schinzel Welch, a resident of Bristol, died on Monday afternoon, Nov. 24, 2003. She was born in Thomaston, Conn., on March 20, 1904, the daughter of Raymond and Edna (Nichols) Schinzel. She celebrated her 99th birthday in March with members of her family. She was a registered nurse and practiced nursing for almost 50 years. She graduated from the Grace-New Haven Hospital in 1924 and began her career in Providence, R.I., In 1929, she joined the Lying-In Hospital staff in Providence. Until she retired in 1970, she had been a nursery supervisor, head nurse and teacher on the staff. She was supervisor of the premature nursery and it was estimated that over 300,000 infants had been under her care during her time there. In 1970, she retired in order to get married, or, as she used to say, "I got a better offer." She married George T. Welch in May 1970 and moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where she lived until 1987. She moved to Shelburne and became a resident of the Terraces, then the Pillars. In 2001, she moved to Briarwood Manor in Vergennes, and then to her latest home with Lynn Kilbourne in Bristol. Mr. Welch died in 1980. She is survived by her stepchildren, Stephen T. Welch and his wife, Patricia of Vergennes, Mildred Clough of Redwood City, Cal., and Edgar A. Welch of Vergennes and Ocala, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at a future date in the North Burial Ground, Providence, RI.
Belle E. Euber
BRANDON - Belle Elizabeth Euber, 78, a former longtime resident of Rutland, died Jan. 29, 2004, at Rutland Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 4, 1925, in Ticonderoga, N.Y., the daughter of William and Myrtle (O'Dell) Green. She received her education in Crown Point, N.Y., schools. She married Alburton Euber on Aug. 15, 1941, in Crown Point. He died in 1985. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cooking and sewing. Survivors include six sons, Alburton Euber of Crown Point, Warren Euber of Rutland Town, Rolland Euber Sr. and David Euber, both of Brandon, Roger Euber and Timothy Euber, both of Rutland; three daughters, Monica McQueen of Brandon, Frances Lambert of Fort Rucker, Ala., and Lisa Genovesi of Rutland; two brothers, Percy Green of Moriah, N.Y., and Donald Green of Rutland; three sisters, Helene Tyrell of Bernard Bay, N.Y., Ella Smith of Hague, N.Y., and Gertrude Jordan of Ticonderoga; 35 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two daughters, Elizabeth Euber and Linda Cushman; a brother, William Green; and a sister, Mildred Green. The graveside service will take place at a later date in Forest Dale Cemetery. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church, will officiate. There will be no calling hours. EDITH LOUISE NICHOLS
Bridport - Edith Louise Nichols, 86, of Bridport, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury. She was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Englewood, N.J. to Walter and Avis (Sammis) Lingerfeldt. She was married to Albert Edward Nichols, who died in 1992. She had lived in Bridport since 1993, moving there from Lantana, Fla., and Miami/Coconut Grove, Fla. Her volunteer work included giving time to the Round Robin Thrift Shop of Porter Hospital. She had a lifelong love of animals and people, especially small children. She is survived by two daughters, Lani Jacobs and her husband, Michael, of Bridport, and Joyce Salzman of Florida; and six grandsons. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert; a son, Keith Nichols; and two brothers. A memorial service was held Monday in Middlebury. Interment will take place at a later date in Florida. Maria Rupp
New Haven - Maria Gloeckle Rupp, 95, died Saturday, Jan 24, 2004, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, Vt., with her loving family by her side. Maria was born April 30, 1908 in Goettingen, Germany. She immigrated to the United States in 1928. On May 1, 1938, she married Karl Rupp. From 1944 until 1971, they owned and operated Rupp Flower Shop in Newark, N.J. Karl and Marie resided in Orange, N.J. until 1993, when they moved to New Haven, Vt., to live with their daughter, Nancy Perdue, and her family. Maria was a kind and caring person who touched many lives. Until recently, she actively enjoyed gardening, cooking her special German dishes, baking delicious cookies, sharing the rich tapestry of her life and being close to her family. Her ever-present radiance, spirituality and generosity will live on through the memories of her family and friends. She was a loving mother to her daughter Nancy and son-in-law Don of New Haven; a wonderful "Oma" to her grandson, Justin, and his wife, Puanani, of Weybridge; and a dear aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. Maria was predeceased by her husband, Karl, in 1996. It was the wish of Maria and her family to celebrate her life later this spring, rather than a funeral service at this time. John Chamberlain
MONKTON - John Carl Chamberlain, 62, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury, following a battle with cancer. He was born May 25, 1941, in Bristol, the son of Carl and Lila Chamberlain. He owned and operated Chamberlain Excavating Inc. His pride and joy was his Kenworth dump truck, which he constantly polished and worked on. Several of his friends were made at the garage and deer camp. He is survived by his wife Jane; a son, John; a daughter, Susan and her husband, Beaver (Michael) Paquin; four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; his stepchildren, Tom and Tracey Jerome, Sue and Jim Jewell, and Tim and Carol Jerome; a brother, Tommy, and his wife, Pat Chamberlain; two sisters, Virginia Greene and Brenda Parker; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and by two brothers, Barry and Ronay. A funeral service was held in Bristol on Monday. Interment will be private. Also, a private service will take place at a later date at deer camp. Margaret Bailey
JASPER COUNTY, Ind. - Margaret Tudor Bailey died on Jan. 3, 2004, at age 90. She was born in Jasper County, Ind., the eldest of six, to Sarah and Leonard Tudor. She grew up in East Chicago and Hammond, Ind. She married the poet Donald Albert Bailey, her husband of 59 years. They lived in Cambridge, Mass., Saranac Lake, N.Y., Manville, N.J., York, Maine, and La Grange Park, Ill. Largely self-educated, she read extensively, was a lifelong pianist and sang with the Saranac Lake oratorio Society. She was a member of the Methodist Church. A tireless volunteer, she helped establish the Manville Public Library and was a teacher-leader for the Home Bureau of the Extension Service. A member of the Needleworkers Society, the Embroiderer's Guild of America and quilting groups in York and LaGrange, she created over 40 hand sewn original quilts and numerous hand-hooked rugs. At her husband's death in 1995, she learned to use the computer to finish publishing his poetry. In 2003, she started computer classes for seniors, and manned the computer lab a Plymouth Place Retirement Community in LaGrange Park. She also continued playing the piano and giving her classical music classes. Family members say she had a keen mind and delighted in learning something new and sharing it with others. She is survived by two sisters, Grace Craig of San Pierre, Ind., and Naomi Barwell of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Ellen Jean and her husband, Robert Ronk, of Boxford, Mass.; and two sons, Alan Donald Bailey of Nipomo, Calif., and David Walter Bailey and his wife Barrie of Salisbury, Vt.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
IRENE BUTTERFIELD
MIDDLEBURY - Irene Fletcher (Luce) Butterfield, 87, died peacefully at her home on Munger Street, Middlebury, on Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Bethel Lympus on Jan. 10, 1917, the daughter of Maurice and Alta Luce. She attended school in Bethel Lympus. On August 17, 1946 she married Edgar Butterfield and moved to their farm on Munger Street. She was a loving and devoted mother to her family. She loved her flowers, to write letters, keeping in touch, to square dance, to garden, can and cook, and she spent many hours doing embroidery work. Irene is survived by her husband of 57 years of Munger Street, and their children, Elizabeth (Betty) Stowe and her husband, Roger, of New Haven; Judith Pelletier and her husband, John, of Rockingham; Patricia Ryan and her husband, Matthew (Pat), of Whitehall, N.Y.; and Edgar Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Middlebury. Eight grandchildren also survive: Jennifer and Sara Pelletier; Ronae (and Nile) Granger; Ross Ryan and his fiancée, Heather; Matthew Ryan and Eric Butterfield; Jamie Butterfield; Jeremie Butterfield and his fiancé, Sabrina. Great-grandchildren include Morgan and Wyatt Granger, and Levi Ryan. Mrs. Butterfield was predeceased by her siblings, Harold, Ethelyn, Carlyle, Addie and Helen, who died in infancy. Surviving are sisters Marion Whitcomb and Bertha "Sally" Purinton and a sister-in-law, Jossie Morelli. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. The family will greet relatives and friends during calling hours Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 5 to 8 pm at the Sanderson Funeral Home, 117 South Main St., Middlebury. The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the United Methodist Church of Middlebury, with the Rev. Jill Colley Robinson presiding. Betty Jo (B.J.) Calhoun
CORNWALL - Betty Jo (B.J.) Calhoun, 74, a resident of Cornwall since 1983, died Saturday, Jan. 31, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, after a long battle with cancer. Following an active career as an educator, she marked her years in Addison County with significant effort and commitment to a wide variety of community activities. In the fall of 2003 she was honored for her achievements in this area by being named one of seven recipients of Middlebury College's Bicentennial Citizen's Medal. The citation read, in part, "(The) community and municipal organizations [you have served] have been made better because of all the time and energy you have devoted to them. More recently, another community leader noted her interest, her resolve, dedication and example - someone who made a difference, a big difference." Born in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Elizabeth (Douds) Calhoun and Jo C. Calhoun, she was graduated from the Laurel School in that city, and subsequently earned her B.A. from Wellesley College, and her M.B.A. at Case Western Reserve University. She returned to Laurel School to teach mathematics and subsequently moved to Worcester, Mass., where she served as dean at the Bancroft School. She then went to the Lincoln School in Providence, R.I., where she served in a number of leadership roles, among them assistant headmistress, business manager, college counselor and head of upper school. She was a board member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Commission on Independent Schools, as well an active participant for many years as a member of The National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls and The Head Mistresses Association of the East. Upon moving to Cornwall in 1983, she immersed herself in areas of importance to her and to the greater community. In Middlebury she was a board member of Frog Hollow Craft Center, and also their acting director. She served for many years as treasurer of the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance, treasurer of the Porter Medical Center Auxiliary, and as treasurer for the Capital Campaign for the Addison County Humane Society. She had also been a longtime volunteer for the Henry Sheldon Museum and its annual Vermont Symphony Orchestra concert. In Cornwall, she was one of the town auditors for nine years, and served on the town planning commission for nine years as well. A lifelong woodworker, she turned bowls and made furniture in the shop at her Cider Mill Farm home in Cornwall, where she also took great pride in planning and growing an ever-expanding series of vegetable gardens. "I am a gardener who never knows when well enough is enough," she once said. She is survived by her brother, William D., of Canfield, Ohio; a stepmother, Betty Dean Calhoun of Cleveland; two nieces, a nephew, and several great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life is planned for early May. Burial will be private. Rita Piper
WEYBRIDGE - Rita Riley Piper passed away peacefully at her son's home with her family by her side Jan. 31, 2004, after a nine-month battle with cancer. She was born in Shoreham on April 18, 1923, the only daughter of Harry and Alphonzine (Pidgeon) Riley. At 3 years of age, she moved to Cornwall, where she attended grade school. She graduated from Middlebury High School and went on to get a business degree at Champlain College. She worked at Porter Hospital, Community Light and Power, and retired in 1992 after 39 years at Foster Motors. Rita was an active volunteer in Weybridge town government and was an avid MUHS Tiger football fan for more than 30 years. After retirement, she became a dedicated volunteer at Porter Hospital and Round Robin. Rita is survived by six children, Alan (A.J.) and his wife, Glenna, of Weybridge, Sheila Huestis and her husband, Steve, of Bridport, Ann Rule and Janet Piper of Middlebury, Stephen and his wife, Linda, of Hollis, N.H., and Eric and his wife, Amy, of Wolfeboro, N.H.; and a brother, Raymond Riley of San Diego, Calif. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and many special friends and in-laws. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, in 1992, her parents, and three brothers, Vernon, Gerald and Levi Riley. A memorial service was held in St. Mary's Church in Middlebury on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Interment will take place at a later date. Carol Smith
Addison/St. Albans - Carol P. Smith, 58, died Sunday evening, Feb. 1, 2004, in the Haven Health Care Center in St. Albans. She was born in Middlebury Sept. 6, 1945, the daughter of Bruce and Mary (Taylor) Putnam. She was a dairy farmer and later worked in food service at the University of Vermont. Her last occupation was store manager for The Country Kitchen in South Burlington. Her greatest joys were her family, fishing, boating and gardening. She was a member of the Addison Baptist Church. She is survived by her three children, Kimberly and her husband, Ronald Ploof, of St. Albans, Bruce Smith and his fiancée, Sharon Hurlburt of Monkton, and Robert G. and his wife, Annette Smith, of St. Albans; 10 grandchildren; her former spouse, Robert H. Smith and his wife, Theresa, of Winooski; two brothers, Arthur and his wife, Sandra Putnam, and Robert Putnam, all of Addison; her companion, Glenn Ashley of Essex Junction, and his two children, Kate and Tim Ashley; an aunt and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held Thursday in St. Albans. Interment will be in the spring in Grand View Cemetery in Addison.
