Betty Newville
Betty Newville, 67, of Duluth died April 23 at her home.
Mrs. Newville was born Dec. 29, 1929 in the Town of Vance Creek to Clarence and Ovidia (Rye) Nordby. She was raised on a farm and attended school in the Town of Vance Creek. On Nov. 19, 1946 she married Ernest Newville in Balsam Lake. The couple operated a milk hauling business near Clear Lake, later moving to Minneapolis to operate a trucking business. In 1960 they moved to Duluth and owned and operated Skyline Express, Inc., and the Fuel Club, which Mrs. Newville continued to operate after her husband's death on June 25, 1995.
Survivors include a son, Gary of Duluth; two daughters, Beverly Callahan of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Mary Mara of Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Curtis Nordby of Prairie Farm; and two sisters, Jean Silverberg of Stanford, Mont., and Sylvia Davidson of Turtle Lake.
She was preceded in death by two infant sons.
Ruth Nylin
Ruth Nylin, 67, of Lake Mary, Fla., died May 13.
She was born Mary Ruth Purpur in Philadelphia, Pa. She and her husband moved to Florida after his retirement in 1987. The couple spent many summers in Mikana and Rice Lake with Jack's parents, John and Sally Nylin.
Survivors include her husband, Jack; two sons, Charles of New City, N.Y., and John of Richfield, Minn.; two daughters, Cynthia Polchinski of Lake Mary and Katherine Berkowitz of New City; seven grandchildren; and her brother, Jack Purpur of Sacramento, Calif.
Erma O'Flanagan
Erma O'Flanagan, 82, of Prairie Farm died April 18 at Cumberland Hospital.
Mrs. O'Flanagan was born Nov. 25, 1914 in Prairie Farm to Frank and Anna (Kurschner) Wirth. She was raised near Prairie Farm and attended school there and in Barron. On May 26, 1942 she married Raymond O'Flanagan in Prairie Farm. They farmed there until her husband's death in 1977. She cared for her mother for 8 years and baby-sat her grandchildren. Mrs. O'Flanagan was a longtime member of the Hope Circle of United Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Marlys LaBlanc of Prairie Farm; and two grandchildren, Colleen LaBlanc of Bloomer and Kelly LaBlanc of River Falls.
Jacquie Perkovich
Jacquie Perkovich, 50, of Moorpark, Calif., and formerly of Rice Lake and Superior, died April 23 at her home.
Mrs. Perkovich was born March 21, 1947 in St. Paul. She was an elementary teacher at Pinecrest School in Simi Valley. She was a eucharistic minister at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Moorpark. She lived in Rice Lake for 9 years, where her husband, Ron, was the water/wastewater utility superintendent for the city. Mrs. Perkovich lived in Moorpark for the last 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Ron; a daughter, Nicole Perkovich; and a son, Josh Perkovich, all of Moorpark; her parents, Jack and Marg Lentsch of Cable; and a brother, Jeff Lentsch of St. Paul.
Mary Rock
Mary M. Rock, 91, of Rice Lake and formerly of Cameron, died April 25 at Heritage Manor in Rice Lake.
Mrs. Rock was born Oct. 3, 1905 in Cameron to Joseph and Mary (Schlesinger) Drost. She was raised in Cameron and graduated from high school there in 1922. Mrs. Rock worked for Western Electric Co. in Chicago until 1933, when, following her mother's death, she returned to Cameron to help her father and family. On July 31, 1948 she married Florian Rock in Cameron. They moved to New Mexico and later to Saco, where they operated a beef cattle ranch. Following her husband's death in 1974, she returned to Cameron. The last 4 years she lived in Rice Lake. Mrs. Rock was a member of the Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed nature and taking walks.
Survivors include a son, John of Long Beach, Wash.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert Drost of New Auburn; and two sisters, Barbara Brooten of St. Paul and Ann Kaylor of Chetek.
She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph.
Edwin Romsos
Edwin Romsos, 94, of Cameron died April 23 at his home.
Mr. Romsos was born Oct. 26, 1902 in the Town of Prairie Lake to Olaus and Sina (Branstad) Romsos. He was raised in the Cameron area and graduated from Cameron High School in 1921. Mr. Romsos farmed in the Cameron area all his life. On Nov. 24, 1940 he married Caroline Lundby in Great Falls, Mont. Mr. Romsos had been a member of the Cameron School Board. He was an avid fisherman, especially enjoying ice fishing.
Survivors include four sons, Dale of Okemos, Mich., Arden of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Lee and David, both of Cameron; and 11 grandchildren.
Mrs. Romsos died April 19, 1992.
Erling Romsos
Erling J. Romsos, 89, of Barronett died May 13 at Barron Riverside Manor.
Mr. Romsos was born Dec. 6, 1907 in the Town of Roosevelt to Ingvald and Karen (Viken) Romsos. He was married May 23, 1938 in Oconto to Marie Dillon, who died July 27, 1993. Mr. Romsos farmed for many years in the Timberland area, and in 1961 was named Burnett County Farmer of the Year. He was on the Burnett County ASCS Board, was active in 4-H and was a member of his church council and the cemetery board.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Mangelsen of Shell Lake; four sons, Wayne of Hudson, Gene of Pewaukee, Cal of Barron and Ron of Barronett; and 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Laura Rudi
Laura E. Rudi, 85, of Barron died April 18 at Barron Riverside Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Rudi was born Dec. 3, 1910 in rural Prairie Farm to John and Katherine (Beiswanger) Kallenbach. She grew up in the Prairie Farm area and later graduated from Barron High School. She attended River Falls State Teachers College and taught in rural schools for several years. On Oct. 8, 1933 she married Clarence Lentz at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Prairie Farm. They farmed in rural Dallas for many years. Mr. Lentz died July 3, 1959. On Sept. 28, 1960 she married Marvin Rudi at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cameron, and they moved to Sturtevant. Mrs. Rudi was active in church activities over the years, including Lutheran Ladies Guild and teaching Sunday school and vacation Bible school. In 1976 they retired and moved to Fairfield Bay, Ark. Mr. Rudi died in 1990 and she returned to the Barron area in 1992.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Fregien of Franksville; a son, Clifford Lentz of Markesan; a brother, Harry Kallenbach of Vancouver, British Columbia; and six grandchildren.
Harold Severson
Harold James Severson, 75, of Cumberland died April 27 at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn.
Mr. Severson was born May 11, 1921 in the Town of Arland to Sever and Lillian (Lammert) Severson. He was raised in the Arland area and farmed there. Mr. Severson joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and served in the European Theater. On June 11, 1949 he married Vivian Dunn in the Town of Crystal Lake. Mr. Severson hauled milk for many years and was employed at Stella Cheese in Cumberland for 30 years until retiring.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian; three sons, Ric and Greg of Cumberland, and Chris of Rice Lake; a daughter, Judy Severson of Rice Lake; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Floyd Severson of Circle Pines, Minn.; and two sisters, Luella Miller of Cle Elum, Wash., and Wanda Lau of Webster.
Delores Snobl
Delores Snobl, 57, of Rice Lake died May 9 at her home. after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were Monday morning at Bethany Lutheran.
Ms. Snobl was born Sept. 14, 1939 in Rice Lake to DeForest and Alice (Smith) Pierce. After graduating from Shell Lake High School she attended teachers college in Rice Lake. Ms. Snobl taught at Franklin Elementary for 3 years. After raising her children, she sold Tupperware for over 18 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra Czekalski of Weyerhaeuser and Rhonda Snobl of Rice Lake; three sons, Robert and DeWayne, both of Eau Claire, and Kevin of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; six grandchildren; a sister, Lois Ellsworth of Cumberland; and three brothers, LeRoy Pierce of Milwaukee, Vernon Pierce of Columbia Heights, Minn. and Ronald Pierce of Sarona.
