Roger Solum
Roger H. Solum of Cumberland, 68, died May 11 at Lakeview Medical Center.
Mr. Solum was born June 5, 1928 in Cumberland to Henry and Anna (Nelson) Solum. He was raised in the Cumberland area and graduated from Cumberland High School in 1947. Mr. Solum served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was also in the Navy Reserves. He had worked at the 3M company in Cumberland for 17 years.
Survivors include two sons, Robert of Rice Lake and Jerry of Cumberland; three grandchildren; a brother, Clair of Cumberland; and two sisters, Verna Nelson of Cumberland and Marlys Peters of Los Gatos, Calif.
Margaret Wokasch
Margaret M. Wokasch, 95, of Nile Health Care Center in Minneapolis, died May 18.
Mrs. Wokasch was born on Feb. 15, 1902 to Frank and Antonia (Levenez) Doubek in Rice Lake. She was a retiree of Char-Lynn and a member of many singing groups in the Minneapolis area, the last being the Happy Re-treads.
Survivors include two sons, Russell and William; four daughters, Elizabeth Edlund, Rita Wokasch, Donna Wiese and Margaret Pfeifer; and 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by nieces and nephews in the Rice Lake area.
Her husband, William Wokasch, died in 1949.
Beverly Winterrowd
Beverly Jean Winterrowd, 66, of Janesville, died April 29 at her home.
Mrs. Winterrowd was born July 1, 1930 in Rice Lake to Lewland and Mildred (DeMars) Olson. She worked for many years in the restaurant business and as a nurses' aide at nursing homes and Mercy Hospital. Mrs. Winterrowd retired in 1992 from General Motors. She was an active Easter Seals volunteer.
Survivors include four daughters, Jean Wescott, Vicky Brasel and Betty Thoms, all of Janesville, and Sue Neumann of Winchester, Tenn.; a son, Bill; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four sisters, Joyce Holmstrom of Rice Lake, Marilyn Hill and Donna Robotka, both of Birchwood, and Shirley Klossner of Janesville; and four brothers, Lewland Olson Jr. of Hilbert, John Olson of Janesville, Gary Olson of Edgerton, and Gene Olson of Apple Valley, Minn.
Arthur Anderson
Arthur Anderson, 82, of Chetek, died March 3 at Barron Medical Center.
Mr. Anderson was born March 30, 1914 in the Town of Dovre to Albert and Lena (Anderson) Anderson. He married Bernice Cary on May 6, 1982 in Chetek. Mr. Anderson had worked for Barron County and was also a farmer and a self-employed carpenter. During WW II he served in the Army as a machine gunner in the South Pacific in the 41st Division. He earned the Bronze Star and also served in the military police. He was a member and past commander of the Chetek American Legion. Mr. Anderson also had been a member of the board of the Town of Sioux Creek and was active at the Chetek pool hall.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice; two stepdaughters, Barbara Bredvick of Chetek and Eileen Fraley of Iola; a brother, Willis of Chetek; two sisters, Bertha Pierson of Waco, Texas, and Doris Ranney of Chetek; seven step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.
Elmer Anderson
Elmer Anderson, 96, of Cumberland died March 16 at Cumberland Extended Care Unit.
Mr. Anderson was born May 20, 1900 in Star Prairie to Ole and Inger (Roesthe) Anderson. He was married June 6, 1928 to Mildred Loney. He was raised in Star Prairie, living there until 1934 and then moved to the Cumberland area and farmed until 1969. He lived in the Comstock area and was employed at 3M in Cumberland, where he worked from 1950-65.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred; two daughters, Donna Young of Berryville, Ark., and Marilyn Peer of Cumberland; two sons, Dennis of Pine Island, Minn., and Richard of Cumberland; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Thomas Baker
Thomas Baker, 66, a former Rice Lake resident, died March 2 at St. Luke's Rehabilitation Center in Spokane, Wash.
Mr. Baker was born Jan. 8, 1931 in New Richmond to William Clifford and Ellen Baker. He graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1948 and then moved to Idaho, where he worked at Safeway Foods and for the Retail Clerks Union. On April 22, 1951 he married Myrtle Ayers in Mullen, Idaho. After working at the Sunshine Silver Mine in Wallace, Idaho, the couple moved to Rice Lake. Mr. Baker farmed in Rice Lake a few years before founding the B and B Foundry near Gundy's Canyon in the Blue Hills, which he operated for 7 years. He then worked for Crotteau's Hide and Fur and later in construction for 6 years until becoming an independent contractor in siding and insulation. In 1982, the couple moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where Mr. Baker built the Cattle Baron Restaurant. He later served as a contracting consultant until retiring in 1995, when he moved to Spokane. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing pool, as well as socializing with people wherever he lived.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle; five daughters, Donna Stillwell and Judy Fedeniro, both of Spokane, Debbie Bolin of Irving, Texas, Carla Gagner of Deer Park, and Sandy Harelstad of Cameron; a son, Jeff of Rice Lake; and 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Paul Brown
Paul Lee Brown, 82, of Rice Lake and formerly of Tecopa, Calif., died March 9 at Rice Lake Convalescent Center.
Mr. Brown was born Dec. 9, 1914 in Crab Orchard, Ky., where he grew up and was educated. He married the former Kay Barbarich. Mr. Brown had worked as an ink marker and later owned and operated a restaurant. He lived in Tecopa, Calif., before moving to Rice Lake to be near his grandniece, Vickie Stoeklen.
Survivors include three brothers, Clarence, Ralph and Corbett; and two sisters, Wanita Jarrison and Leona Thompson.
Harold Case
Harold Case, 77, of Barron died March 22 at his home.
Mr. Case was born in Rice Lake on March 21, 1920 to Theodore and Audrey Case and graduated from Rice Lake High School. During World War II he served with the 4th Division in the European Theater for 4 years. In 1943 he married Alvine Mauch of Easton, Penn. He was employed at Uniroyal until his retirement. He was an ardent Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his daughter Frances Case of Eau Claire; a sister-in-law Marie Snow of Easton, Penn.; and one granddaughter.
Wilbert Charley
Wilbert B. Charley, 81, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Cumberland, died March 1 at Valley Hospital in Las Vegas.
Mr. Charley was born Sept. 8, 1915 to Crawford and Nellie Charley in Oaktown, Ind., where he grew up and received his elementary and part of his high school education. He then worked at a hospital in Chicago, where he met the former Madeline Neby, whom he married there on Feb. 14, 1939. He later moved to Cumberland and bought a dairy farm there, which he operated until 1964. After leaving the farm, he worked for 3M in Cumberland until retiring in 1975. In 1996, he moved to Las Vegas to live with his sister, Mary Smith.
Survivors include his twin brother, Lewis of Memphis, Ind.; and four sisters, including Mary Smith of Las Vegas.
Mrs. Charley died in November 1995.
Violet Checkalski
Violet Muriel Checkalski, 83, of Weyerhaeuser died March 20 at Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake.
Mrs. Checkalski was born Sept. 13, 1913 in North Branch, Minn., to Alexander Shinler and Alma Johnson. She came to Rusk County in 1916, and on June 23, 1937 she married Albert Checkalski in Bruce. Mrs. Checkalski was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Hoehn of Hawkins; a grandson; and a sister, Edith Hanson of Weyerhaeuser.
