Violet L. Gavic, 67
Violet Lorraine Rame Gavic, 67, known by her family and friends as "Vonnie," died Thursday, Oct. 26, 1999, at her home in Woodbury, Minn., following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Frost, Minn., and attended country grade school. She moved with her family to Bricelyn, Minn., and was confirmed at North Blue Earth Lutheran Church. She graduated from Bricelyn High School in 1949 and attended Mankato Commercial College in Mankato, Minn.
She was employed as a secretary for the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Omaha Railway in St. James, Minn. She then joined the staff of KYSM Radio in Mankato and worked as director of continuity for 2 years.
She married Robert Gavic in 1954. She lived in Spring Valley from 1954-95, where she raised four children. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, was active in the community and enjoyed participating in community theatre.
She joined Durand Federal Savings and Loan in 1979 and was assistant branch manager until 1984. She was administrative assistant for the Cooperative Educational Service Agency #11 in Elmwood from 1988-92.
She moved to Woodbury in 1995. Until her recent illness she enjoyed serving as a volunteer in the nursery at United Hospital, St. Paul.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lars and Lena Rame; her sisters and brothers-in-law: Alida and Cleve Eldred, Bertha and Dee Hargrave, Donald Flo, and Dick Earl.
She is survived by her children: Jorv and Jaci Gavic of River Falls, Jeri and Sam Quy of Woodbury, Minn., Jean Gavic of Woodbury, Minn., and Kari and John Delaney of Stillwater, Minn.; 12 grandchildren: Kaci, Brandon, Collin, and Mackenzie Gavic, Olivia Quy, Lindsey and Kathryn Anderson, Kiandra Trealoff, and Kevin, Megan, Walker, and Ayden Delaney; her siblings: Midge and Troy Franusich, Helge and Lucille Rame, Astrid Earl, Signe and John Beaty, and Art and Barb Rame; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Friday, Oct. 29, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley, with the Rev. Reinhold Markwart officiating.
Music was provided by organist David Goulette and vocalist Lindsey Anderson.
Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Valley.
Pallbearers were: Roy Earl, David Flo, Neil Rame, Paul Gavic, James Gavic, and Derrick Rame.
Eva J. Wichman, 74
Eva Jean Wichman, 74, of River Falls, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Kinnic Long Term Care center after a series of illnesses.
She was born Jan. 19, 1925, in River Falls, the daughter of Dan and Florence (Fierce) Linehan. She grew up in River Falls and graduated from River Falls High School. She attended college in River Falls for one year, where she met and then married Carl Wichman on Dec. 27, 1944, at the St. Paul Cathedral.
Her athleticism started at 6 weeks of age when she was able to stand in her father's palm, which earned her a place in Ripley's "Believe It or Not," column. She earned numerous medals in diving competitions in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Her coach said she was Olympic caliber.
She combed many a head of hair in helping her husband with school pictures.
She will be mostly missed because of her genuine goodness, sweetness and infectious Irish sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Florence Linehan; her husband, Carl; her sister, Jenny; and her brothers, Ed, John, Howard, Harry, David, Dickie, and Tom Linehan.
She is survived by her sisters: Harriet Mueller and Helen Ann Holmes; her brothers: Jim and Dan Linehan; her children: Pat and Dean Bennett of Luck, Carla of St. Croix Falls, Phil of River Falls, Jane and Jeff Hinz of Star Prairie and Sandy and Roger VanBeek of Roberts; her six grandchildren: Jay and Teri Bennett, Jennifer and Joe Hinz, Travis Wichman and Luke VanBeek, who honored her as pallbearers; and a great-granddaughter, Kallie Jo Hinz.
The funeral was Nov. 2 at St. Bridget Catholic Church with the Rev. Gerald Harris officiating. Burial was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the River Falls Chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary of which she was a member.

Guy K. Phernetton, 97
Guy "Pete" Kenneth Phernetton, 97, of Red Wing, Minn., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home.
He was born May 24, 1902, in Centerville, the son of James and Mary (Hampton) Phernetton. He attended schools in Pierce County and then married Myrtle Olson in 1926. They farmed a number of years in Pierce County. Myrtle died in 1947.
On Aug. 26, 1948, he married Agnes Clobes at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Red Wing. They lived in Red Wing, where he was employed by Baystate Mill, retiring in 1967. Agnes died Jan. 24, 1986.
He traveled with his brother, Rob, after retiring and enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed the love of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Myrtle and Agnes; one daughter, Shirley Goulette; one granddaughter, Dawn Latzke; and one great-grandson, Steven Riegelman; six brothers: Melvin, Rob, Russell, Silas, Ray and Tommy; three sisters: Alice, Zilda and Minerva; and two step-daughters: Avery Stapel and Joan Risberg.
He is survived by one son, Kenneth E. and Delores Phernetton of Hastings, Minn.; one step-daughter, Joyce and Dick Carter of Denver; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin with the Rev. John Hanson officiating.
Burial was in the North Rush River Cemetery, rural Baldwin.
Pallbearers were Chad Perry, Kenny and Jason Phernetton, Dan, Danny and Lance Poellinger, Lee Rogers, Chad and Duane Swanson.
Fred H. Elhorn, 91
Fred Henry Elhorn, 91, of rural Hammond died July 17, 1999, at the Baldwin Care Center, where he had lived since April 15, 1998.
The son of Fred Otto and Mary Borner Elhorn, he was born May 3, 1908 in Prescott. He attended school in Prescott.
On June 16, 1937, he married Helen Lillian Bottolfson at Prescott. They lived in Prescott until moving to Cylon in 1940. In 1946 they moved to the River Falls area and then to rural Hammond in 1950.
Mr. Elhorn was a dairy farmer and carpenter most of his life. He enjoyed restoring furniture, going to auctions and watching sports on television and listening to the radio at the same time. He also enjoyed listening to old time music, reading and watching the old Johnny Carson show.
He is survived by Helen, his wife of 62 years; two daughters, a son, a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law: Joan and Bill Olson of St. Cloud, Minn., Donald and Nancy Elhorn of Hudson and Judith Chumley of Hammond; three grandchildren: Brent Elhorn of Hammond, Heidi Olson-Sopcinski of Minneapolis and Brad Olson of St. Cloud; and great-grandchildren: Josh and Hannah Elhorn of Hammond.
Mr. Elhorn was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Theodore, Benjamin and Henry; and one son-in-law: Bobby Chumley, who died in 1983.
Services were held July 20 at the Murphy-Troyer Funeral Home in Baldwin with the Rev. Tanya Rist, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.
Pallbearers were Brent Elhorn, Brad and Bill Olson and Kenneth Sopcinki.
Memorials are preferred to the Baldwin Care Center.
Thomas H. Segerstrom, 55
Thomas H. Segerstrom, 55, of Harmony Grove died July 19, 1999, at his home.
He fought cancer for eight months and passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.
The son of Conquer and Adeline Segerstrom, he was born Sept. 30, 1943 in River Falls. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1961 and then served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
In 1969 he graduated from UW-River Falls with a bachelor's degree in agriculture.
Mr. Segerstrom worked in the farm machinery business. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Segerstrom; his parents; and many aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife Lorene (Olsen); son and daughter-in-law: Dan and Sheila Segerstrom of Wrightstown; daughter and son-in-law: Katie and Mac Jackson of Oak Harbor, Wash.; step son and daughter-in-law: Phillip and Rachael Symes of Madison; step daughters: Cindy Symes and Samantha Symes of Minneapolis; his sister: Connie Rae Driscoll of River Falls; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Cashman Mortuary. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ezekiel Lutheran Church. There will also be visitation at the church for an hour before the service.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at Lakeside in Harmony Grove.
Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, River Falls.
Pallbearers are Phil and Gary Deiss, Steve Singerhouse, Chuck Barber, Burton "Chainsaw" Mills and Carl Olsen.
Rose S. Penny, 89
Rose S. Penny, 89, of Ellsworth died Friday, July 30, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center in Ellsworth.
She was born June 3, 1910, in the town of River Falls in Pierce County, the daughter of John M. and Stella R. (Kaczor) Fox.
She attended school in Beldenville and worked most of her life at various jobs. She married Olaf Peterson and they later divorced. She also married Leo Penny and they later divorced.
She lived in River Falls until moving to Hudson in 1957. She moved to Ellsworth in 1987.
She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Olaf, and her husband, Leo; one daughter, Irene; three sisters and one brother.
She is survived by six sons: John and Kathy Peterson of Red Wing, Minn., James and Leona Peterson of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Jerome and Lola Peterson of Fon du Lac, Wayne and Rita Peterson of Ellsworth, Edward and Kathy Peterson of Beldenville, and Mike and Marcia Penny of River Falls; one daughter, Rosemary and Todd Christiansen of Ellsworth; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Catherine Buck of Beldenville.
Funeral was Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth with the Rev. Edwin Knauf officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
John VandeVrede, 84
John VandeVrede, 84, of River Falls died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born April 14, 1915, in Baldwin, the son of Martin and Helen VandeVrede. He married Eunice Bosman on Oct. 19, 1938. She died March 1, 1988.
He was employed in railroad car shops in Hudson and Lindquist Motors of River Falls. After retirement he drove a van for the Housing Authority of River Falls. He was a member of the River Falls United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Helen; his wife, Eunice; and two sisters.
He is survived by his sons: LeRoy and Lois of Menomonie, Gary of Minong and his friend, Lynn; daughters: Jan Malmer of River Falls and her friend, Dick, Darlene and Gary Hetrick, Joy and Terry Black of River Falls; a life-time friend, Irene Torkelson; a special friend, Millie Weiss of River Falls; several nieces and nephews; 15 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Thursday, Aug. 5, at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry McCann officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Troy Malmer, Justin Black, Lane Hetrick, Mark VandeVrede, Jim VandeVrede and Aaron Hetrick.
