George Korbel, 75
George Korbel, 75, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born on "The Flats" near the Washington Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis on April 14, 1924. He was the oldest of six children born to George and Mary (Garay) Korbel - both immigrants from Czechoslovakia.
His family moved to Boyceville in 1926 to become farmers. He attended country schools near Boyceville and at the age of 15, he started working for farmers in the local area.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He took his basic training in Florida and was sent overseas in the fall of 1944. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and held prisoner until April 14, 1945. He was taken to a hospital in Paris and then flown to New York.
He recuperated in a hospital at Fort Sheridan, Ill. After spending 90 days recuperating at home, he was sent to Camp Campbell in Kentucky. He re-enlisted in the Army for 1 year and received a 90-day furlough to marry Maryann Barstad of Boyceville on Dec. 15, 1945.
They lived in Clarksville, Tenn., until December of 1946 when George was discharged. Two years ago, on a trip to Europe, he had the opportunity to visit the location of a POW camp in Austria where he had been held. He also visited his parent's hometowns.
George and MaryAnn moved to Minneapolis where their three children - Gwen Paulette, Gary Allen and Kevin Wayne - were born. Through the next years, George drove truck, had a service station, worked at Flour City, Minneapolis Moline and Braniff Airlines.
In 1962 the family moved to River Falls. He commuted to St. Paul to work until 1965, when George and MaryAnn bought a bowling alley and restaurant in Spring Valley. They moved back to River Falls in 1969. George did carpentry and worked for the city of Hudson until he retired in 1987.
He became interested in stained glass and kept busy with this hobby. He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping and the outdoors. He was lifelong member of the Ex-POWs, the VFW in Hudson, the River Falls American Legion, and the DAV of Menomonie. He did volunteer work at the Highground Memorial near Neillsville, Meals on Wheels and was active in his church. He served many terms as a member of different church councils.
He was preceded in death by his father, George, who died in 1973; and his mother, Mary, who died in 1996.
He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, MaryAnn; his daughter, Gwen and Bill Couch; his sons, Gary and Paula (Ruder) and Kevin and Christine (Meyer); seven grandchildren: Kristi (Couch) and Joe O'Connell, Scott and Misty (Gerhardt) Couch, Michael Couch, Katrina Korbel, and Andrew, George and Danny Korbel; six great-grandchildren: Dallas, James, Katelynn and Maclain O'Connell and Brant and Sarah Couch; three brothers: John and Emma, Frank and Marvel, and Edward and Ann; two sisters: Bessie Tranby and Marie Kuzmik; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Monday, Sept. 13, at Cross Lutheran Church, Roberts, with the Rev. Dean Simpson officiating.
Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Pete Hyben, Mike Korbel, Jerry Johnson, Paul Barstad, David Korbel and Scott Couch.

James C. Grandgaard, 78
James Cornell Grandgaard, 78, of River Falls, died at The Lutheran Home: River Falls on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999.
He was born May 17, 1921, in Wild Rose, N.D., the son of Ingvald and Katinka Grandgaard. He was raised in LaCrosse.
He married Dorothy Haukland in 1946. They moved to River Falls in 1954.
James farmed for a while and then went back to being a sheet metal worker in St. Paul. He retired in the early 1980s. He was in the Marine Corps, and was a gunnery sergeant during World War II, serving in the South Pacific.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Grandgaard, of River Falls; his sons, Richard and Rebecca Grandgaard of Osseo, John and Gail Grandgaard of Newark, Ohio, Robert and Sandra Grandgaard of Hayden, Idaho; his daughters, Karen and Les Larson of St. Paul, Christine and Victor Bradley of Mission, Tex.; grandchildren: Lorraine Rongstad, Aaron Grandgaard, James Bradley Grandgaard, Andrew Grandgaard, Daniel Grandgaard, Lisa Joliet, and Devon Bradley; great-grandchildren: Lindsey and Parker Rongstad; his brothers: Roger and Beulah Grandgaard of Fairfield Bay, Ark., Charles Grandgaard to Morongo Valley, Calif., and George and Betty Grandgaard of Winona, Minn.
A memorial service was to be held Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m., at Rush River Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Sutherland officiating. Organist was to be Linda Simpson and Ione Hayes was to be soloist.
Visitation was to be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, at the church.
Interment was at Rush River Lutheran Cemetery.

Melvin L. Sather, 55
Melvin "Mel" L. Sather, 55, of Beldenville, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at his log home in Grantsburg of an apparent heart attack.
He was born Nov. 2, 1943, in Appleton, the son of Clarence and Bernice (Shellito) Sather. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Beldenville. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1961 and attended UW-River Falls for 1 year. He served in the U.S. Naval/Air Reserve for 2 years.
He married Carol Johnson on Dec. 4, 1965. He was a charter member of the Eau Galle/Rush River Sportsman's Club and was a 4-H member and leader for 17 years.
He enjoyed hunting, participating in the Lawton Pool League and the El Paso Euchre League, traveling and spending time at his log home that was newly built in rural Grantsburg. He farmed all his life in Ellsworth and the town of Martell. He retired from milking jerseys 3 years ago.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Bernice; an aunt and uncle; and one niece.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Beldenville; two sons: Jody and Stephanie Sather of Beldenville and Gerald Sather of Chicago; one granddaughter, Leslie Wilkens; one sister, Marlene and Trent Schmotzer of Red Wing, Minn.; three nieces and two nephews.
Wilda M. Deis, 72
Wilda M. Deis, 72, of River Falls, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at St. John's Hospital, Maplewood, Minn.
She was born May 10, 1927, the daughter of Harold and Lydia (Leary) Wilson. She received her education in River Falls and is a graduate of River Falls High School.
She married Harold Deis on Dec. 1, 1970.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Lydia; and her brother, Pat.
She is survived by her husband, Harold, of River Falls; her daughter, Linda and Mike Kriel of Cottage Grove, Minn., her grandson: Ted Sitz of St. Paul; her step-sons: Dennis Deis of Milwaukee, Thomas Deis of Milwaukee, Dale Deis of Milwaukee; her step-daughter, Diana Avilo of Milwaukee; and a step-brother, Robert and Rose Leary of River Falls.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, at the River Falls United Methodist Church.
Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Howard A. Nelson, 67
Howard Allen Nelson, 67, of Finlayson, Minn., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Hennepin County Medical Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was born Jan. 22, 1932, the son of Fritz and Lillian Nelson in the town of Martell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Lillian.
He is survived by his wife, Rita; his sons, Tom and Allen; his daughters: Linda and Patty; his brother, Lawrence Nelson of Frederic; his sisters: Esther Lundgaard of Martell, Joyce and Kenneth Johnson of Ellsworth, Margaret and Tom Driscoll of Prescott, Florence and Howard Miller of River Falls and Grace and Greg Williams of Chicago; many nephews and nieces.
A private service will be held.
Richard V. Bucek, 50
Richard Vladimir Bucek, 50, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at his home in River Falls.
He was born Nov. 2, 1949, in Minneapolis, the son of Vladimir and Jeann Bucek.
He graduated from high school in Minneapolis. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army in the early 1970s and served in Vietnam. He lived in River Falls for 5 years, working at Fox's Ace Hardware for a time.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean M. Bucek.
He is survived by his father, Vladimir "Lad" H. Bucek of Brainerd, Minn.; a sister, Linda and Jim Pedersen of Shakopee, Minn.; nieces Kathye Jo and Dawn; great-nephews Chad and Zachary; a good friend, George LaFave; other relatives and friends.
Memorial service was Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Nelson-Murphy Funeral Home, with Randy Baar officiating.
Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Gertrude L. Gore, 81
Gertrude L. Gore, 81, of River Falls died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at Osseo Area Medical Center in Osseo.
She was born March 15, 1918, in Barron County, to John and Ruth (Quam) Prosser. She married Clarence Gore on June 29, 1940.
While living in Turtle Lake she worked as a seamstress. In 1961 she moved to Osseo and worked as a bookkeeper for the Beef River Telephone Co. She has been a resident of River Falls since 1967.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, who died Sept. 21, 1979; her parents, John and Ruth; and a brother, Hugh Prosser.
She is survived by her children: Linda Johnson of White Bear Lake, Minn., Becky and Allen Rongstad of Osseo, Kristine and Paul Brown Gore of Hull, Quebec, Lance and Julie Gore of River Falls; a brother, Robert Prosser of Turtle Lake; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Monday, Dec. 27, at Park View Methodist Church in Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Ted Simpson officiating.
Burial was in Lake View Cemetery, Turtle Lake.
