Joyce Smith Sarko, 97
Joyce Smith Sarko, 97, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
She was born Aug. 13, 1901, in Beldenville, the daughter of George and Sara Reed. She grew up in Ellsworth.
She married Jefferson Smith on Nov. 27, 1924, on Thanksgiving Day. He died Dec. 24, 1963. The couple had one child, a son, David, who died Aug. 13, 1994.
She married Stanley Sarko of Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 15, 1971. He died Feb. 10, 1991.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Sara; her first husband, Jefferson Smith; her second husband, Stanley Sarko; her son, David Smith; two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Donna Smith; five grandchildren: Patricia and Fran Neir, Sandra and Mike Wurm, Polly Smith, Stephanie Smith and Mary G. Smith; three great-grandchildren: Melissa and Christian Wurm and Olivia Neir; a brother-in-law, Gordon Smith of Dillon, Mont.; a sister-in-law, Betsey Smith of California; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 2, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Delbert Permann officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Cashman Mortuary provided arrangements.

Roy J. Forehand, 96
Roy James Forehand, 96, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at the Spring Valley Nursing Home in Spring Valley.
He was born March 25, 1902, to James and Kate (Sprague) Forehand in Hillsdale. He married Elaine Chinnock in River Falls in 1923.
He devoted his life to education. He liked to tell the story that because going to high school meant so much to him, he would walk every day from Hillsdale to Barron and home again, 7 miles each way. He graduated from UW-River Falls with a degree in education, a master's degree from the University of Madison in administration, and additional credits from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
He taught in many small communities in Wisconsin. He was also county superintendent of schools in Taylor County. The last 20 years of his professional life were spent in Round Lake, Ill., as superintendent of schools.
He had a great love for his work in education and for his students. He also enjoyed beautifying the school grounds where he taught - planting shrubs, trees and flowers.
He belonged to many community organizations. He believed, as he lived, that educators should play an active role in the community. When he retired in 1973, he advised future educators to "never hold a grudge," "never be swayed by politics," "never buy support with favors," and "always try to think in terms of community good."
He will be missed by all whose lives he touched and he will continue to live in their hearts and minds.
He is survived by one son, Roy Forehand, Jr., of River Falls; three daughters: Lois and Hub Fisher of Menomonie, Donna Forehand of Spring Valley and Mary Lou Forehand of Menomonie; one brother, Bob and Ruby Forehand of Hillsdale; two sisters: Lillian Branch of Dallas and Elizabeth Forehand of Hillsdale; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 2, at Cashman Mortuary, with the Rev. Delbert Permann officiating.
Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Lloyd S. Gilbert, 85
Lloyd S. Gilbert, 85, a long-time resident of Hudson and retired business founder/owner of Gilbert Motors in Hudson, died at the Hudson Medical Center on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998.
He was born on June 17, 1913, in Hudson, the son of Henry and Sarah (Nelson) Gilbert. He received his education and graduated in Hudson.
He worked on the family farm. At the age of 18 he owned and operated the first feed store in North Hudson and later in Hudson. In 1939, he owned and operated the feed mill and machinery business in Hudson. It was sold in 1952.
Also while in business he started selling machinery and automobiles in 1948 in downtown Hudson. He later moved that business, known as Gilbert Motors, up on the hill. It is now owned and operated by his sons, L.G. and Donald Gilbert. He retired from ownership in 1981. His wife, Lucille, also worked in the family business.
He was married to Lucille Tobin on Jan. 18, 1939, at St. John's Church in St. Paul. He loved and was proud of the accomplishments of his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing.
He was one of the founders of the Hudson Boosters Organization, a past Hudson Rotary president and a member for over 35 years, a past Hudson Hospital board president, a past board member and was involved with fundraising for the CCH/Pineridge complex in Hudson. He was a past member of the Wisconsin Auto-Truck Association, National Auto Dealers Association and Wisconsin Farm Equipment Association.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille; his sons: L.G. and Virginia Boisen and Donald and Carol, both of Hudson; Douglas and Nancy of Homewood, Ill.; a daughter, Sharon and Joe Likover of Delton, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 2, at the United Methodist Church in Hudson, with the Rev. Ruth Egerer officiating. Mary Post was organist and vocalist was granddaughter Emily Gilbert.
Burial was at Willow River Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Chad Gilbert, Harry Gilbert, Brian Gilbert, Jacob Likover, Bill Wanner and Mark McDaniel. Honorary pallbearers were: Dick Weigel, Gege Benedict and Keith Riley.
Memorials are preferred.

Darrel Bottolfson, 50
Darrel Bottolfson, 50, of River Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Cashman Mortuary.

Nora Christenson, 86
Nora Christenson, 86, of River Falls, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999.
She was born April 21, 1912, in Waukesha County to Ida and Nickalos Tollefson. In 1942, she married Einard Storm, who died in 1944. On March 10, 1962, she married Edwin Christenson of River Falls. He also preceded her in death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ida and Nickalos; her first husband, Einard; her second husband, Edwin; one sister, Louise; two half-sisters: Henrietta Anderson and Sabrina Wold; and one half-brother, Peter.
She is survived by her stepsons: James and Karen Christenson of Ann Arbor, Mich., and the Rev. Ray and Kay Christenson of Las Vegas; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church. Burial was in Our Savior's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Beldenville.
Cashman Mortuary handled arrangements.

Helen D. Houser, 89
Helen D. Houser, 89, of River Falls died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Regions Hospital, St. Paul.
She was born in Menomonie on Christmas Day, 1909, the daughter of Solon and Nellie Bunker. She was a graduate of Menomonie High School and Stout Institute. She taught home economics at high schools in Alma Center, Watertown and Roberts.
She married E.E. "Al" Houser in 1940. He ran an oil and gas business in River Falls for over 30 years.
She will be remembered by her family and friends for her friendly smile, her caring ways, and her determination to remain living in her home. She was a long-time member of the River Falls First Congregational United Church of Christ and enjoyed the South Fork Ladies Aid. She loved to cook, to play bridge, and was known for her large collection of angels.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E.E. "Al" Houser, in 1985; four brothers: Walter, George, Albion, and Willard; and one sister, Marion.
She is survived by two sons, Don and Colleen Houser of Columbus, Ohio, and Larry and Ginny Houser of Westminster, Md.; and by five grand children: Scott, Kelle, Lee, Kerri, and Joshua. She is also survived by one brother, Robert Bunker; and sisters-in-law Marietta Bunker, Helen Calkins, Dorothy Houser and brother-in-law, Roger and Betty Houser.
A memorial service is being planned for April, and her cremated remains will be interred at Greenwood Cemetery.
Cashman Mortuary provided arrangements.

Emma O'Brien-Martell, 78
Emma O'Brien-Martell, 78, of Hammond and formerly of Ellsworth, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond.
Funeral was Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin with the Rev. John Hanson officiating.
Burial was in Our Savior's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Beldenville.
