Winclof Czerwonka
Winclof "Vince" Czerwonka, 97, of Chetek died March 25 at Knapp Haven Nursing Home there.
Mr. Czerwonka was born Sept. 12, 1899 in Barron County to Michael and Mary (Opelka) Czerwonka. On Dec. 22, 1936 he married Edna Jorstad in Deerfield, Ill. The couple lived in Illinois until 1938, when they moved to a farm near New Auburn. They moved to Chetek in 1945 and to their present home in 1948. Mr. Czerwonka worked for the Barron County Highway Department until retirement in 1964. He was a member of the Rosary Society and the Knights of Columbus. He had resided at Knapp Haven since 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Edna; a son, Marvin of Janesville; a daughter, Marlene Harnish of Tacoma, Wash.; and five grandsons and two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Ann Harnish.
Timothy Davis
Timothy "Trapper" J. Davis, 38, of Rice Lake, died March 3 at Lakeview Medical Center.
Mr. Davis was born Dec, 15, 1958 to Gary and Arlene Davis in Rice Lake, where he grew up and attended school. As a young man, he worked at various jobs in the Rice Lake area. Later he worked with his brother, Mike, as a drywall contractor and was known as one of the best in his line of work. He attended classes at WITC-Rice Lake and obtained his GED degree in 1986. On May 25, 1991 he married the former Marianne Wood in Rice Lake. Mr. Davis enjoyed hunting and trapping.
Survivors include his wife, Marianne; three sons, John, Timothy and Trapper; a daughter, Harley Rose, all at home; a granddaughter; his parents, Gary and Arlene Davis of Rice Lake; five brothers, Gary, Mike, Rick and Randy, all of Rice Lake, and Greg of Birchwood; paternal grandmother Melvina Davis of Cameron; and maternal grandfather Herman Miller of Rice Lake.
Vera V. Didier
Vera V. Didier, 78, of the Town of Long Lake, died March 24 at the Indianhead Medical Center in Shell Lake.
Mrs. Didier was born Jan. 21 1919 to August and Augusta Till in Bangor, Mich. On Dec. 2, 1939 she married Henry Didier in Evanston, Ill. Following their marriage they lived in Evanston and then in Bangor, Mich. They moved to the Town of Long Lake in 1980.
She is survived by her son Henry of Webster, Minn.; three daughters, Dorothy Didier of Marion, of Ohio, Lois Nisbet of East Haven, Conn., and Linda Lubensky of Sarona; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and her sister Ruby Racki of Paw Paw, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1984
Bernice Fairman
Bernice Helen Fairman, 76, of Cameron and formerly of Exeland, died March 4 at Heritage Manor in Rice Lake.
Mrs. Fairman was born March 6, 1920 in Chicago to Edward and Pauline (Metz) Eleder. She graduated from Lindblom High School there in 1937 and married William Fairman on July 3, 1941. They moved to a farm near Exeland in 1948, where they operated a dairy farm for many years. The couple moved to rural Cameron in 1985. Mrs. Fairman worked at Dairyland State Bank in Bruce and Exeland for 25 years. After moving to Cameron, she became a United Methodist Women member. She also had been a member of the Weyerhaeuser VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Sally Wojtkiewicz of Cameron and Marge Fairman of Ladysmith; a son, William of Boca Raton, Fla.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Eldred "Jack" Eleder of Palos Park, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William, on June 15, 1987.
John Fillmore
John F. Fillmore, 96, of Rice Lake, died March 30 at the Rice Lake Convalescent Center.
Mr. Fillmore was born in Foley, Minn., on Aug. 3, 1900 to Emmett and Effie (Hildebrandt) Fillmore. He moved to Barron as a young man, where he farmed and married Florence Shackleton on Sept. 23, 1923. She preceded him in death, and he later married Zemira Lathe. Mr. Fillmore entered the ministry in 1948, serving as pastor for the Assembly of God Church in Grandview, Minn., and later at the Assembly of God Church in Cable. He later moved to Hayward, where he operated a jail ministry. After the death of his second wife, he moved to Rice Lake.
Survivors include four sons, Glen of Albuquerque, N.M., Harold of Altoona, Theodore of Big Lake, Minn., and Lloyd of Lockport, N.Y.; and 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Emma Flor
Emma C. Flor, 88, of Chetek died March 6 at Barron Medical Center.
Mrs. Flor was born March 18, 1908 in Oriska, N.D., to Garhardt and Julia (Uhlenkamp) Riesner. She married John Flor on July 11, 1936 in Milwaukee. Mrs. Flor had been a homemaker and had worked as a nutritionist for Chetek schools. She also was the proprietor of B&B in Chetek and had worked at Carlson Poultry and Nuwood, or Carter's Cafe, in Chetek. Mrs. Flor had been president of the Ladies Guild at her church and was a den mother for Cub Scouts, working at blue and gold banquets. She also enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include two sons, G.C. "Butch" Flor of Chetek and James Flor of Apple Valley, Minn.; a daughter, Jackie Brohman of Chetek; a brother, Albert Riesner of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Sister Mary Martin of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Flor died in September 1963.
Hattie Frank
Hattie B. Frank, 85, of Almena, died March 24 at Barron Medical Center.
Mrs. Frank was born July 2, 1911 in the Town of Dallas to Charles and Martha Gowin. She married Charles Bagley, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Frank raised five children and had worked in many nursing homes over the years and at Barron Medical Center. She later married Edward Frank, who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Frank baby-sat for many families in the community.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Tahtinen of Almena; three sons, Ronald Bagley of Barron, Charles Bagley of Spooner, and Russell Bagley of Ladysmith; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Margie Horel.
Doris Gasser
Doris L. Gasser, 74, of Rice Lake, died March 18 at her home.
Ms. Gasser was born May 15, 1922 to Roy and Frieda Gasser in the Town of Honey Creek, Sauk County, where she grew up and was educated. In 1955, after further education, she moved to Rice Lake, where she practiced naturopathy for many years.
Survivors include two sisters, Jeanette Ward of Sauk City, and Bythia Gasser of Prairie du Sac.
Leighton George, 79, of Cumberland died at his home March 15.
Mr. George was born Dec. 6, 1917 in Rice Lake to John Sidney and Ella Fake. He had been the owner of the Cumberland Advocate, working as an editor for the paper 23 years. Mr. George also had served on the Cumberland City Council, Library Board, Planning Commission and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter member of the Barron County Campus Foundation. Mr. George was a veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion and the Rice Lake VFW. He also had been active in the Rice Lake Elks for many years and had been a clarinetist for the Rice Lake Municipal Band, the Rice Lake Elks Band and the UW Center-Barron County Communiversity Band.
Survivors include his wife, Nina; two daughters, Diane George of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Peggy George of New Brighton, Minn.; a granddaughter; and a sister, Evelyn Burton of Rice Lake.
John Gilbertson
John O. Gilbertson, 82, of Rice Lake died March 19 at Lakeview Medical Center.
Mr. Gilbertson was born May 11, 1914 in the Town of Dovre to Hans and Clara (Johnson) Gilbertson. He grew up in the towns of Dovre and Maple Grove and served in the Army during WW II. He had farmed in the Town of Arland and hauled milk in the Barron and Cameron area. Mr. Gilbertson also worked for Swan Farms near Cameron and later at Sanna Dairy in Cameron. He had lived in Rice Lake the past 20 years.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Peterson of Cumberland and Helen Slayton of Chetek; and a companion, Alma Livingston of Rice Lake.
